Dr. Michael Grange Group Leader at the Rosalind Franklin Institute (United Kingdom) Talk Title: Cryo-plasma FIB/SEM for in-situ structural biology and vEM Bio: Michael Grange is a group leader at the Rosalind Franklin Institute in the UK. His research group focuses on using combinations of light and electron microscopy techniques to reveal (ultra) structural information at a tissue level in a robust, high-throughput manner. His group has pioneered the use of plasma focused ion beams for applications in structural biology and volumetric imaging, with the aim to resolve structures inside native tissue on a routine basis within a targeted multimodal framework. This talk will discuss the promise of these approaches for future developments and how such technologies promise to fit into nascent cryo-CLEM and tissue imaging workflows. Dr. Damien Alloyeau CNRS Director of Research at the University Paris-Cit? (France) Talk Title: Understanding the formation of nanomaterials with in situ TEM Bio: Damien Alloyeau is a CNRS director of research at the University Paris-Cit?. Since 2010, his group has been working on the fabrication and atomic-scale characterization of nanomaterials for catalytic and biomedical applications. He also heads a national user facility specialized in aberration-corrected in situ TEM both in liquid and gas phases, aimed at understanding the dynamics of nano-objects in their formation and application media.

Part of the UK community-led training program in cryo-EM funded by Wellcome and the MRC.

Hosted by University of Leeds ABSL, eBIC Diamond Light Source, and University of Leicester, this four day course is targeted at those with no or very little experience in cryo-electron tomography, and will introduce participants to sample preparation, tilt-series acquisition, and image analysis pipelines. Participants will work in small groups with instructors to gain hands-on TEM (Titan Krios) experience, and learn how to independently use software packages (IMOD, AreTomo, EMAN2 and RELION) for tomogram reconstruction, tomogram segmentation, particle picking, and sub-tomogram averaging.

UK/Japan Symposium on Frontiers of Structural Biology

The symposium celebrates the Japanâ€"UK partnership and brings together wide range of experts from Japan covering all of the frontier structural biology approaches including cryo-electron microscopy, synchrotron and free-electron laser X-ray crystallography and neutron crystallography.
The symposium will have two full days of lectures, the first day finishing with a public lecture by the Nobel Laureate Richard Henderson and the second day with lectures (open to the public) from Sir Tom Blundell and Dr Harren Jhoti, FRS (President and Chief Executive of Astex Pharmaceuticals).
The symposium is supported by the University of Liverpool and RIKEN together with BBSRC, STFC and ILL.
Registration is essential and is limited to 125 delegates. A small registration fee of £50 is being set to encourage ECR and PDRAs participation.

iNEXT-D FIB-Tomo workshop

This is a workshop distributed over four participating centres of the iNEXT-Discovery infrastructure.

Practicals will be run in parallel sessions on each site and shared morning lectures on the background and technical aspects will be followed jointly by all the participants. It comprises sample vitrification, cryo-FIB milling to obtain lamella and cryo-ET data acquisition & evaluation.
Distributed workshop with practicals at iNEXT-Discovery partner sites in parallel sessions and shared morning lectures (on-site + visio presentations) followed by all the participants at each site.Â

This year's workshop will focus on cryo-electron tomography data processing, which will include, in addition to tomography basics, tilt-series alignment, reconstruction, subtomogram averaging, classification, heterogeneity analysis and segmentation through the use of software such as IMOD, Warp/M, Relion, STOPGAP and tomoDRGN (segmentation software to be finalized).

Neutrons in Structural Biology â€" Challenges and Opportunities

The ORNL Neutron Sciences Directorate is organizing a workshop, Neutrons in Structural Biology â€" Challenges & Opportunities, to be held June 10-12, 2024 at the Sheraton Pentagon City Hotel, Arlington, VA. The goal of the workshop is to garner support for the construction of the macromolecular neutron diffraction beamline EWALD at ORNL’s Second Target Station. EWALD will be capable of performing biological neutron crystallography on radically smaller crystals to help meet neutron beamtime demand for challenging biological systems.
The workshop will highlight the biological scientific community’s need for access to a new generation of neutron scattering capabilities to address pressing challenges in biochemistry, structural biology, enzymology and drug design that cannot be solved with the current neutron scattering technology or other structural biology techniques such as X-ray crystallography, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, and cryo-EM.
The workshop will also introduce the Instrument Scientific Advisory Committee for the development of a macromolecular neutron diffractometer at ORNL’s Second Target Station. The beamline will deliver orders of magnitude gains in performance for biological research and expand accessibility to larger biological systems crucial for understanding biochemistry and advancing the design of future therapeutics.Â
In addition, the Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP)-enabled IMAGINE-X instrument, a capability recently funded by the Department of Energy’s Biopreparedness Research Virtual Environment (BRaVE) Initiative, will be presented at the workshop. IMAGINE-X, under construction at the High Flux Isotope Reactor, will dramatically enhance signal from hydrogen atoms, obviating the need for deuteration, and decreasing the crystal volume required for a successful experiment by one-to-two orders of magnitude. The successful development of the DNP capability and its implementation at the STS beamline will create a "quantum leap" in biological macromolecular neutron crystallography.
The workshop will be a forum for structural biology and biochemistry experts, early career researchers, and students to discuss scientific advances and collaboration opportunities. The workshop will include a 1-day satellite training workshop (June 10, 2024) to educate graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in the application of neutron crystallography and small angle scattering in structural biology.

Workshop 1: Cryo-EM Sample Preparation, Screening, Data Collection and Analysis (In-person)
 This workshop will focus on single-particle analysis of macromolecules, covering various aspects such as sample preparation (including both negative staining and cryo-sample preparation), sample screening using screening electron microscopes (EMs), data collection employing high-end EMs (e.g., Krios), and data analysis using LBMS GPU computers with modern software (e.g., CryoSPARC). To optimize interactions and hands-on experience, this workshop will be limited to 16 participants, selected based on their application materials.
All applicants must submit their application online by February 4, 2024.

The XVIIIth International Conference on Electron Microscopy is jointly organized by the Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Microscopy Society. The conference is to be held in southern part of Poland in the picturesque Zakopane resort.
The conference will bring together researchers from different fields of science and engineering including materials science, chemistry, physics, life science (biology and medicine), whose focal point is on application of electron microscopy to study of materials and materials related properties. The broad spectrum of topics comprises analytical electron microscopy, imaging in SEM/STEM, crystallography and HRTEM techniques, 3D imaging, in-situ electron microscopy, cryomicroscopy, as well as applications of electron microscopy to study materials spanning from traditional engineering materials to highly advanced functional materials, nanomaterials and biological materials.
The conference also welcomes scientists, engineers and representatives of electron microscopes manufacturers, whose focus is on instrumentational developments to showcase and review the latest technical advances. It will provide a forum for the exchange of thoughts and ideas, news on the latest trends in the field of electron microscopy as well as to promote cooperation between the participants from science and industry.
