2017 St Andrews CCP4 Protein Crystallography Summer School

St Andrews PX Summer School
The University of St Andrews will be hosting a protein crystallography summer school once again this year, which will take place 20-26 August.
The course aims to cover the theoretical and practical aspects of protein crystallography from protein expression and purification, through crystal growth to data collection on in-house and synchrotron sources, phasing methods, automated model building and phase extension, refinement, and validation. Hands-on sessions in data processing (XIA2, DIALS), molecular replacement, MAD/SAD phasing, refinement and electron density map interpretation (in COOT) will be included.
The School is intended for first/second year postgraduates or postdocs new to crystallography. The week is very intensive, and gives a concentrated overview of the methods which many find useful.
As in the past, priority is given to UK applicants because of the funding arrangements, but is open to a limited number of overseas applicants.

Application of Big Data Technology and 3D Visualization
This 3-day hands-on workshop introduces participants to the development of fast and scalable structural bioinformatics methods using state-of-the-art Big Data technologies and Web-GL 3D visualization. The first two days of the workshop combine lectures, hands-on applications, and programming sessions. On the third day participants apply the new technologies to theirown projects.
This workshop is held at the University of California, San Diego and hostedby the Structural Bioinformatics Laboratory at SDSC in collaboration with the RCSB Protein Data Bank.

Problems in structural biology today can very often not be solved by one technique alone, but need to be solved by a combination of methods, including NMR, X-ray crystallography, electron microscopy, structural mass spectrometry, and SAXS. The heterogeneous data coming from these methods need to be combined with advanced molecular modeling techniques. The goal of the course is to provide young scientists that have more specialized knowledge in one of the techniques an overview over the broad range of modern structural methods available. Special emphasis will be given to computational approaches to integrate data (such as IMP, ARIA).
The course is principally aimed at the mature graduate student / postdoctoral level, but applications from scientists at all levels are encouraged. The course will consist of lectures, which will give introductions into the principles and limitations of the different techniques, and practical work on data analysis with the major structure refinement / modeling programs.
The course fee of € 250 (students) covers lodging and part of the meals.

Introducing the new Cryo-Electron Microscopy Platform for Structural Biology
The aim of this symposium is to promote the exciting opportunities in
structural biology opened by the advances in cryo-electron microscopy
and by the integration of structural biology approaches at multi-scale
level.
This symposium will celebrate the establishment of a new cryo-EM
platform at the EPN campus. The platform will offer access to a Titan
Krios microscope, which will operate as a user facility at the ESRF and
will reinforce the ongoing EM activity at the IBS and at the EMBL. The
new facility will be open to the international ESRF user community based on
peer-review of scientific merit and technical feasibility of their
projects. Scientists from ESRF, IBS and EMBL will support user
operation.
The symposium will bring together leading experts, junior researchers
and representatives of industrial partners to present and discuss the
latest developments and the future trends in cryo-EM as well as their
applications in addressing biological challenges.
We encourage participants to present their scientific results in a
poster session, with the possibility of being selected for a short talk.
Due to limited capacity (maximum of 80 external participants), early
registration is encouraged.
Measurement and Interpretation of Diffuse Scattering in X-Ray Diffraction for Macromolecular Crystallography: Workshop 4 of the NSLS-II and CFN User's meeting

X-ray diffraction from macromolecular crystals includes both sharply peaked Bragg reflections and diffuse intensity between the peaks. The information in Bragg scattering reflects the mean electron density in the unit cells of the crystal. The diffuse scattering arises from correlations in the variations of electron density that may occur from one unit cell to another, and therefore contains information about collective motions in proteins. A major focus of the workshop will be to provide a roadmap to the acquisition of reliable data by surveying measurement methods and discussing the increase in measurement accuracy enabled by improved detectors, experimental methods, and data integration. Missing from recent results is real information about the behavior of the molecules being studied that would guide the thinking of biochemists and biologists. To discuss these and their relative merits will be a second major focus of the workshop. The charge to this workshop will be to provide a roadmap to efforts that will provide the biological understanding we believe is hidden in the data.
