Real-space analysis of diffraction data deals with general structural concepts such as atomic distribution functions and structural correlation lengths, and now employs standard formulae common to neutron, X-ray and other diffraction techniques. Â It therefore facilitates a synergetic convergence of hitherto largely disjoint communities: liquids/glasses diffraction and crystalline powder diffraction.

Diffraction on Energy Materials School

The event will be divided in two blocks. The first block will be a specialised Diffraction on Energy Materials School
This School will be based on selected lectures together with intensive hands-on sessions using advanced tools for diffraction data treatment either implemented in Rietveld refinement programs, such as FullProf, or available as independent refinement programs such as FAULTS (also included in the FullProf suite).
The second block will be a meeting concerned with Diffraction on Energy Materials. This meeting will be organized as a parallel event of the ILL-ESS User Meeting which will take place at the Congress Center WTC (Grenoble). The participants can share their ideas in the framework of the proposed programme.
MATRAC 1 School 'Application of Neutrons and Synchrotron Radiation in Materials Science'

In Lauenburg and Hamburg
A systematic overview of the application of neutrons and synchrotron radiation to the structural analysis of engineering materials will be provided. The focus of the practical training will be on synchrotron experiments. Neutron data analysis will also be practised. Therefore, the school consists of a two-day theoretical course in Lauenburg, followed by two days of experiments at GEMS/DESY in Hamburg. The fifth day of the school offers further talks and a final discussion. All relevant experimental methods will be covered.
50th IFF Spring School: "Scattering! Soft, Functional and Quantum Materials"

The IFF Spring School 2019 will provide a solid introduction into scattering methods for the investigation of condensed matter and biomaterials. Topics will include modern scattering techniques and the advanced methods utilised at large scale facilities.
Participants are expected to have a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics and physics and/or chemistry of condensed matter. All lectures will be held in English.
Registration period: 5th November 2018 to 10th January 2019.
Financial support is available for students who have yet to finish their Master's degree, to cover part of accommodation costs.

7th School on Representational Analysis and Magnetic Structures (RAMS)

The school is targeted towards researchers interested in applying group theory to solving magnetic structures with neutron diffraction. The school will cover both representational analysis and magnetic space group approaches, and will include both lectures and software labs.

- Symmetry and magnetic structure determination: developments in refinement techniques and examples
- Geometrical frustration and incommensurate magnetic ordering
