The workshop is organized by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, in cooperation with Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research.
The aim of the school is to introduce young researchers to the latest developments in the field of nano-biophysics/biochemistry and structural biology, and to their revolutionary impact on biology, biotechnology, drug design and delivery as well as early diagnostics of wide spread diseases. The rapid development of nano-sciences and novel nano-materials has in fact made available a new range of tools and approaches that have revolutionized biological and medical research, by allowing scientist to manipulate nano-particles and macromolecular objects, to build supramolecular entities with improved functionalities, to monitor the function of single molecules, and to understand cell behavior at molecular level.Â

Aims
Complementing the Faraday Discussions meeting on Nanoparticle Synthesis and Assembly (Chicago, USA, April 2015) which will focus on ordered superlattice arrays of ligand-passivated inorganic clusters, with applications related to size scalability and processing, this meeting will emphasise the importance of considering both ordered and disordered assemblies, and the translation of fundamental science to applications. The scope of the Discussion will include chemically distinct classes of nanoparticle assemblies - polymer nanocomposites, patchy colloids, ligand-passivated inorganic nanocrystals - and link them with soft matter systems, with a view to understanding some of the basic principles of nanoparticle assembly and how they affect practical applications. The topic is particularly appropriate for the Faraday Discussions format with the possibility of documenting an interesting cross-fertilization of ideas.

HERCULES is a European course for PhD students and young researchers using Neutrons and Synchrotron Radiation for applications in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Hard & Soft Condensed Matter.
   The 1-month school includes lectures (60%), hands-on practicals and tutorials at partner institutes (DESY and European XFEL in Hamburg, Ellettra and FERMI in Trieste, ESRF, ILL in Grenoble, Soleil and LLB near Paris, SLS in Switzerland) and Grenoble Laboratories (CEA, CNRS, EMBL, IBS).
   The school includes a common part and two parallel sessions:

1st BioStruct-X Mediterranean Macromolecular Crystallography Workshop

The Technion Center for Structural Biology (TCSB) is organizing a three day workshop on macromolecular crystallography under the auspices of the BioStruct-X project.
The workshop will include comprehensive theoretical lectures on all facets of crystallographic structure determination and hands-on tutorials. The lectures will be open to all, but the tutorials will be limited to 20 participants that will be chosen by committee. Lectures and tutorials will be given by Tom Terwilliger (Los Alamos), Randy Read (Cambridge), Zbigniew Dauter (Argonne), Karine Sparta (from the XDS development group) and members of the TCSB. Tender X-rays in Macromolecular Crystallography

The workshop is part of the series of foresight workshops organized by the HZB.
The central theme of the workshop is the use of tender X-rays in the field of
macromolecular crystallography (MX). While typical MX experiments are conducted
at wavelengths of around 1.0 Ã... (energy 12.4 keV), there is an ever growing tendency
to also consider wavelengths in the tender X-ray region (1.5 â€" 3.0 A and beyond) for
MX applications. Examples are the possibility to determine the structures of native
proteins by sulphur anomalous scattering (native SAD), the unambiguous discrimination
from protein-bound solvent ions from water molecules, the determination of oxidation
states of relevant metal ions in protein structures, the investigation of solvent and
substrate channels using Xenon mapping, etc. In the workshop, some of these
modern developments will be highlighted and a case will be made for the increased
use of tender X-rays for MX applications.
Invited speakers include Wayne Hendrickson, James Holton, Armin Wagner, Leo
Chavas, Meitian Wang, Oliver Einsle, Markus Wahl and Oliver Daumke.
Registration is free of charge but limited to 100 participants. 4 Travel grants to attend

Photonic Crystals-Inhibited Spontaneous Emission: Optical Antennas-Enhanced Spontaneous Emission

Photonic crystals have now been identified within the coloration of peacocks, parrots, chameleons, butterflies and many other species. But photonic crystals are also part of everyday technological life in opto-electronic telecommunication devices that provide us with internet, cloud storage, and email.Â
Nonetheless, the original motivation of photonic crystals was to create a “bandgap†in which the spontaneous emission of light would be prevented. The “optical antenna†can have the opposite effect, accelerating spontaneous emission. Over 100 years after the radio antenna, we finally have tiny “optical antennas†which can act on molecules and quantum dots. With optical antennas, spontaneous light emission can become faster than stimulated emission.Â
