Meeting participants working in protein crystallography and practitioners of cryo electron microscopy, tomography, and diffraction will have the opportunity to learn first-hand from internationally recognized experts contributing to the "Resolution Revolution". Recent advances in direct electron detection, automated cryogenic sample handling, phase plate technologies, and correlative cryo fluorescent light/electron microscopy hold considerable promise for protein crystallographers intent on studying larger, more complex, and often heterogeneous (conformational and compositional) assemblies of biological macromolecules that resist crystallization. At the close of the symposium, Invited Speakers will be asked to contribute to a round table discussion of the important roles that current and would-be cryo-EM/ET/ED practitioners can play in the future of the American Crystallographic Association.

The First UAE Synchrotron User Meeting

The purpose of the workshop is to bring together the best scientists from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and synchrotron experts and see how the most strategic fields for the UAEÂ can be addressed through synchrotron science. UAE scientists will include both national and non-national speakers. International top synchrotron experts will give a talk at the event.
One of the main points will be to understand what the requirements of the UAE scientists are in terms of synchrotron research (what types of beamlines, techniques, etc.). Once these are defined, we will try to understand what would be the best option in terms of costs and benefits for the UAE.

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE
Over the last 50 years, crystallography has developed from a method capable of determining the structures of isolated, soluble proteins to one able to provide detailed information on mechanisms of action of integral membrane proteins, whole viruses and the complex nano-machines that are central to cellular function. To discover how biology works researchers are now combining the power of crystallography with multiple other methods, spanning from the atomic to cellular scale, and including revolutionary developments in electron cryo-microscopy and tomography. This Course will celebrate its milestone as the 50th in the crystallography series started by Dorothy Hodgkin by focusing on integration:
- of different techniques,
- of molecular and cellular approaches and
- of the crystallographic community, including diversity.
discussion of topics ranging from sample preparation to data analysis software. To commemorate the achievements of the Erice crystallography school over the past 50 years, the course will feature several sessions that reflect on the past and look to the future to highlight the factors that create an inclusive discipline.

CCP-EM Leeds RELION Workshop

In Leeds
Hosted by CCP-EM and the Astbury Biostructure Laboratory (University of Leeds, UK) this one day workshop will focus on the RELION software package and is led by its developer Sjors Scheres (MRC-LMB).
The training will involve a hands-on tutorial of RELION 2.0 for cryo-EM single-particle analysis (http://www2.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk/relion). It will cover the entire process from initial micrograph inspection, CTF estimation, (automated) particle picking, 2D and 3D classification, 3D high-resolution refinement, movie-processing, and map sharpening.
Computational facilities will be provided along with refreshments.
Registration is free but not a guarantee of acceptance. Application for registration will close on Monday 15th August 2016, participants will be selected and we will confirm places no later than Friday 19th August 2016. There are 30 places at the workshop.

MicroED is a cryo-EM method that uses electron diffraction to facilitate structure determination from sub-micron sized 3D crystals of biological material. MicroED uses equipment and procedures that are standard on many cryo-EM:s, and because of this the technique can be easily adopted in labs and facilities around the world. To encourage the widespread use of MicroED we are offering this workshop to teach microscopists how to perform the technique and adopt it at their own institutions. The first MicroED workshop was held in February of 2016 and was heavily oversubscribed. For this reason we are offering a second workshop.
There is no registration fee for participation, and Janelia will provide on-site housing and meals. Attendees are expected to cover their own travel expenses and must be able to stay for the duration.
Space in the course is limited. The application deadline is August 1, 2016 (11:59 PM EDT)
Fifth 2DX Workshop on Electron Crystallography of Membrane Proteins

The workshop will provide hands-on training on practical aspects of 2D crystal data collection on a Titan Krios, and cover in depth the theoretical foundations and the practical image processing of 2D crystal cryo-EM images with the 2DX software package. No previous experience is required.
Topics include:
Basics of 2D electron crystallography
- Introduction to 2D electron crystallography
- Cryo-electron microscopy sample preparation for 2D crystals of membrane proteins
- Cryo-EM data collection of 2D crystals
- Introduction to 2DX
- Drift correction using ZORRO Â
Basic image processing with 2DX
- Determination of the defocus, crystal tilt geometry, crystal lattice
- Crystal Unbending - including movie-mode drift correction of individual unit cells in dose-fractionated image series

Advanced topics in image processing with 2DX
- Approaches for a partial reconstruction of amplitudes and phases inside of the missing cone
- Processing of 2D crystal unit cells with RELION and FREALIGN, under exploitation of neighborhood correlation of certain image parameters
- Advanced usage of the 2DX backend library
- Preparation of final results with quantitative description of statistical values (e.g., resolution) for export to databases (EMDB).
Computing infrastructure will be provided in place and participants are welcome to bring their own data sets and/or computer (OSX or Linux).
