IWAIP-CryoEM 2017: 3rd International Workshop of Advanced Image Processing of Cryo-Electron Microscopy

 A workshop of the Chinese 3DEM community
To meet the current and future needs of CryoEM technology, during this workshop, the following topics will be focused on:
       1. Novel algorithms to analyze molecular machineries with continuous conformational change.
       2. Image processing tools to analyze the structure of molecular machineries in situ.
       3. Tools and methods to aid accurate modeling based on CryoEM maps.
       4. EMDB/EMPIAR usage and deposition.

       The workshop will last four days with intensive programs including courses in the morning, practices in the afternoon and free discussions in the evening. The approximate number of attendees for the courses will be 100 and the number for the practice session is restricted to 25. To be noted that there will be a video session for those who are not selected for practice session to watch the practice via a web-video and do practice using their own laptop.
       Graduate students, postdocs and young scientists who currently work in the CryoEM field with preliminary CryoEM image processing knowledge are particularly encouraged to attend this workshop.

Cryo-Electron Microscopy Symposium

Introducing the new Cryo-Electron Microscopy Platform for Structural Biology
The aim of this symposium is to promote the exciting opportunities in
structural biology opened by the advances in cryo-electron microscopy
and by the integration of structural biology approaches at multi-scale
level.
This symposium will celebrate the establishment of a new cryo-EM
platform at the EPN campus. The platform will offer access to a Titan
Krios microscope, which will operate as a user facility at the ESRF and
will reinforce the ongoing EM activity at the IBS and at the EMBL. The
new facility will be open to the international ESRF user community based on
peer-review of scientific merit and technical feasibility of their
projects. Scientists from ESRF, IBS and EMBL will support user
operation.
The symposium will bring together leading experts, junior researchers
and representatives of industrial partners to present and discuss the
latest developments and the future trends in cryo-EM as well as their
applications in addressing biological challenges.
We encourage participants to present their scientific results in a
poster session, with the possibility of being selected for a short talk.
Due to limited capacity (maximum of 80 external participants), early
registration is encouraged.
SPHIRE workshop

All stages of the SPHIRE pipeline will be covered, including:
- Micrograph movie alignment
- CTF estimation
- 2D classification
- 3D starting model generation
- High-resolution 3D refinement
- 3D focused classification and heterogeneity analysis
The course is aimed at graduate students, faculty, and staff, that currently work in or plan to enter the 3DEM field and wish to use SPHIRE to process cryo-EM single particle data at their home laboratories for their own research projects.
The registration fee is 150 Euro and includes all meals. Participants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation expenses. Enrollment is limited to 30 attendees, which will be selected from all applicants. Computing hardware will be provided in place.
Bay Area Cryo-EM Meeting

The workshop is aimed at participants that already have some experience practicing cryoEM. We can accommodate a total of 100 participants. The workshop will be held at CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, 85 Saint Nicholas Terrace, New York, NY 10031, which is immediately adjacent to NYSBC where NRAMM is located.
A registration fee of $750 will be charged to participants from non-profit institutions. Most meals will be provided as part of the workshop registration fee but participants will be expected to cover their own travel and lodging expenses. Cost of housing is estimated to be less than $150/night for a shared room and transportation from hotels to the venue can be either by walking or using public transport ($2.75 each way). Further details on these and other matters will be provided at the Participants Guide
Addressing Challenges in CryoEM Grid Preparation

There are many challenges in preparing vitrified specimens of suitable ice thickness, and suitable particle preservation, distribution, and orientation, in a repeatable, reliable and robust manner. A major goal of the workshop will be to understand the issues underlying these challenges and discuss new approaches that will lead to improvements in all of these aspects.

First eBIC symposium and third CCP-EM Spring Symposium

Bridging the gap between cryo-EM and crystallography
AICS2017 "Bridging the gap between cryo-EM and crystallography" will offer
the opportunity to young researchers in biochemistry or structural biology
at the PhD/postdoctoral level to approach the fundamental questions arising
from the cryo-EM experiment setup. Central topics will include evaluation of
sample suitability for analysis and its preparation, choice of appropriate
instrumentation for single particle, tomography or electron diffraction
approaches, data processing and interpretation of results. A showcase of
recent results will contour the tutorial sessions.

EMBO practical course on image processing for cryo-electron microscopy

The aim of the course is to teach the basic principles and practical
aspects of image processing to bioscientists and structural biologists
wishing to determine macromolecular structures by cryo electron
microscopy (EM). The course will concentrate on processing of single
particle images, and will be aimed at advanced PhD students and postdocs
working on projects producing cryo EM images for structural analysis.
Familiarity with UNIX would be an advantage.
The first half of the day will include two 50-minutes lectures and
discussions. A 3-hour practical would take place in the afternoon, with
discussion time at the end. After dinner there will be invited speaker
lectures or student presentations.

The workshop has been designed for postgraduate, postdoctoral and research scientists that deal with macromolecular crystallography but need further knowledge on the routine uses, the state of the art and fundamentals that underlie the modern techniques for macromolecular crystallography. The topics will cover crystallographic computing and fundamentals using XDS, CCP4 and Phenix, as well as the state of the art on topics such as the strategies for protein production, data collection,phasing and refinement with ARCIMBOLDO, SHELX and SIR2014 and modeling with COOT.
This year a full-day on breakthrough techniques such as XFEL and cryo EM has been introduced.
MCS2017 will provide six days of lectures and workshops. The course is designed for 25 highly motivated attendants.

MicroED is a cryoEM method that uses electron diffraction to facilitate structure determination from sub-micron sized 3D crystals, eliminating the need to grow large crystals. MicroED uses equipment and procedures that are standard on many cryoTEM:s, and because of this the technique can be easily adopted in labs and facilities around the world. To facilitate the widespread use of MicroED, we are offering these workshops to teach microscopists how to perform the technique and adopt it at their own institutions.
There is no registration fee for participation, and Janelia will provide on-site housing and meals. Attendees are expected to cover their own travel expenses and must be able to stay for the duration. Applicants must register and submit a brief statement on why they wish to participate, via our online registration system.
