Serial Crystallography workshop

The workshop is part of this year's users meeting (24-26 September 2018) at the MAX IV Laboratory.
MAX IV Laboratory recently received funding from the Novo Nordisk
Foundation for MicroMAX, a micro-focus macromolecular crystallography
beamline. This workshop will survey the present status of the field of
serial crystallography and give possibilities to discuss the present and
future developments. A motivating factor is to define the context and
scope of the MicroMAX beamline.
Ultrafast X-ray Summer Seminar (UXSS)

In Menlo Park, CA
UXSS is an annual event jointly organized by the Stanford PULSE
Institute at SLAC and the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL)
at DESY. UXSS is intended to introduce students and postdocs to the
latest science that is enabled by novel X-ray Free Electron Lasers. The
program will be highly interdisciplinary, with topics ranging from
materials physics to structural biology. The list of confirmed speakers
can be found below. There will also be a coursework exercise involving
a mock proposal for the LCLS, with the help of experienced mentors.

 Registration is open! Early registration will continue until April 30,
and registration will close on June 4. Limited travel scholarships are
available in the amounts of $500 (domestic) or $1000 (foreign) to help
cover the cost of travel and lodging. Students will have the
opportunity to apply for travel scholarships upon registration until
April 20.

Les Houches/TSRC Workshop on Protein Dynamics

In Chamonix Valley
results from state-of-the-art experimental approaches (including optical
spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, XFELs, electron
microscopy, atomic-force microscopy and scattering methods), and
theoretical and computational methods to studying protein dynamics.
The Les Houches â€" TSRC Protein Dynamics Workshop complements the
long-standing TSRC Protein Dynamics Workshop, held every other year in
the odd calendar years at the Telluride Science Research Center
in Telluride, Colorado. In Les
Houches, about 30 invited speakers will give oral presentations that
comprise a pedagogic introduction to the methodology employed, followed
by applications from their own work. Each 30-minute presentation will be
followed by 15 minutes of discussion. In addition to the 30 invited
speakers, there will be space for 30 student/postdoctoral participants
that can present posters. Its relatively small number of
participants favors exchange of ideas across disciplines and
fostering of collaborations. A few slots for oral presentations are still
available.
The Ecole de Physique des Houches can be conveniently reached from
Geneva Airport (including the train station at the airport with direct
connections to Zurich) by shuttle-bus service within 80 minutes.
EPF Lausanne MOOC course: Synchrotrons and X-Ray Free Electron Lasers

The Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from the EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne) covers introductory aspects of synchrotron and XFEL radiation. A link to the course can be found at

The course is aimed at a broad scientific audience from historical-artefact restorators and paleontologists, through biologists, biochemists and chemical engineers, to materials scientists and physicists. It includes the following themes:
- Interaction of X-rays with matter;
- The production and physics of synchrotron and XFEL radiation;
- X-ray optics, beamlines, and instrumentation;
- X-ray diffraction and scattering;
- UV and X-ray spectroscopies;
- X-ray imaging (mainly tomography and lensless imaging/ptychography);
- Extra week on phasing techniques in macromolecular crystallography.
The course begins next Monday 5th March 2018 and lasts for nine weeks - each week, two to three new videos are released (youTube videos embedded in the edX player, which can be downloaded and viewed at leisure), each approximately 20 minutes long, plus optional problems (and optional final exam at the end of the course). Enrollment on the course (see above link) is free; a Verified Certificate can be purchased at the end for those who so wish and have achieved the pass grade.
This is an excellent opportunity, especially for younger staff and students, to learn more about the fascinating and interdisciplinary world of synchrotron science and all its myriad possibilities in an engaging and exciting manner!

15 Years of Russian-German Laboratory at BESSY II

The aims of the workshop are:
- to commemorate Professor Vera K. Adamchuk, the pioneer of Russian â€" German collaborations in the field of the use of synchrotron radiation and the co-founder of the Russian-German Laboratory at BESSY II, who passed away in fall 2016.
- to highlight recent progress at the Russian-German Laboratory and to discuss with the community the future use of the new undulator beamline that will be available besides the dipole beamline.
- to introduce the community into the future use of the European Free Electron Laser Facility European XFEL.
EuXFEL Data Analysis Workshop

The European XFEL saw its first user experiments in September 2017. This exciting new light source promises to open up new types of experiments for structural biology with XFELs. EuXFEL is different from previous XFELs like LCLS and SACLA in that it provides extremely high pulse repetition rate and a unique pulse train structure. The high repetition rate of some 27000 pulses per second (compared to 120 Hz at LCLS) enables rapid data collection for serial crystallography and single molecule diffraction experiments. This means new data collection strategies are needed to deal with the rapid data acquisition, data reduction, high bandwidth and storage requirements for data processing.
BioXFEL is hosting a new workshop in our popular XFEL Data Analysis series of workshops focused exclusively on data collection and analysis at the EuXFEL. This workshop will feature discussions on:
- production and properties of X-rays
- beamlines and their capabilities
- sample environment
- sample delivery strategies
- new opportunities in single particle imaging, solution scattering, and serial crystallography
- new types of detectors and data reduction strategies
- data analysis, access, and curation

In Situ Serial Crystallography - ISSX2 Workshop

presentation of the `in meso in situ serial crystallography (IMISX)' method
[Huang et al. (2016), Acta Cryst. D72, 93-112] for the X-ray structure determination of membrane proteins.
The workshop consists of introductory lectures, as well as presentations of
serial crystallography activities at both synchrotron and XFEL facilities.
The main part of the workshop focuses on hands-on practicals on methods for
growing crystals of membrane proteins by the in meso or lipidic cubic
phase (LCP) method, for collecting serial diffraction data on
micro-crystals directly in situ and for processing the data most
efficiently for high-resolution structure determination.
There is no registration fee and all local expenses will be covered, but
participants are requested to take care of their travel arrangements. The
workshop is limited to 20 students.
