The School targets young scientists to introduce them to the exceptional research opportunities offered by synchrotron and free-electron-laser (FEL) facilities worldwide for exploring the properties of all types of matter.
The school will provide an overview of the production and characteristics of synchrotron and free-electron-laser light, its interaction with matter and the numerous experimental methods enabled by these interactions that have become indispensable tools spanning over all domains of basic and applied research. The school lecturers will demonstrate the multidisciplinary applications and the most recent instrumental developments and science breakthroughs in the fields relevant to their expertise. The program will also include discussions of the lecturers with the students, talks describing the open access to these facilities based on the merits of the proposed project and possible industrial application. Demonstration sessions will be organized at the beamlines of Elettra's synchrotron and FEL facilities.

Session I: "From Gene to Crystal" (21-24th January 2020).
Topics: expression, purification, and crystallization of proteins; max 12 participants).
Session II:From Crystal to Structure (3-6th March 2020)
Topics: diffraction experiment, obtaining the crystalline
structure,validation and Protein Data Bank deposition. max 15 participants)
Each session includes short theoretical lessons, technical lessons, and
lab sessions (at least 4h per day).
Lessons will be held in Italian languages mainly.
Aim of the School: providing the technical knowledge to get the X-ray
crystal structure of a protein by starting from the genetic information;
Target: postDoc and PhD students with limited experience in the field
of protein crystallography;
Registration: each participant can choose to which School session
apply, according to his background. Deadline: 10th December 2019 for
both sessions.

Les Houches-TSRC Workshop on Protein Dynamics

The 4th edition of the Protein Dynamics Workshop to be held in Les Houches, close to Chamonix/Mont Blanc, in the French Alps.
This workshop gathers about 70 speakers and participants working in the
wide area of protein dynamics, in the outstanding location of the
historical Ecole de Physique des Houches, an environment ideally suited
for exchange of ideas and fostering collaborations. About 30 invited
speakers will give oral presentations that comprise a pedagogic
introduction to the methodology employed, followed by applications from
their own work, and a particular emphasis on discussions within the
cross-disciplinary participants.

The day will be structured into four sessions and attendees will hear from expert speakers in a number of respective talks, which include:
 *  Understanding the challenges in structural biology, with Professor Dave Stuart, Diamond Light Source/University of Oxford and Professor Christopher J Schofield, University of Oxford
 *  X-ray applications in dynamic structural biology, with Professor Henrike Müller-Werkmeister, University of Potsdam and Dr Aina Cohen, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory
 *  Emerging methods in studying protein dynamics, with Dr Chris Russo, University of Cambridge and Dr Adrian Mancuso, European XFEL
 *  Outlook and horizon view, with Professor James Naismith, Rosalind Franklin Institute/University of Oxford
The workshop will provide a platform for all life scientists to discuss the frontiers in structural biology, using various methods that include X-ray-based methods from synchrotrons and XFELs, as well as cryo-electron microscopy and NMR. The day will finish with a drinks reception to allow for further networking opportunities.
