Phenix User Workshop

The Phenix developers will be holding an online *Phenix User Workshop on the 7th and 14th of April at 4-9pm PDT.* These times will work best for researchers in Asia and Australasia.

The format of the workshop will be demos of the use of Phenix programs combined with slides to explain the theory. We expect an interactive meeting where attendees can ask questions for the Phenix team to answer. The workshop will cover aspects of macromolecular crystallography in Phenix, with the final emphasis based on the applicants’ research interests.

"What can cryo electron tomography and cryo soft X-ray tomography do? From the basics to correlative imaging approaches?
The aim of the workshop is to provide the basics of the techniques, their limitations and opportunities, and extends to cryo-superresolution light microscopy, advanced instrumentation, implementation and data processing.
The event is open to PhD students, Postdocs or any potential user who would like to learn more about cryo-electron tomography and cryo soft X-ray tomography.

The format of the workshop is online (using Zoom) and is scheduled to take place on March 16, March 17 and March 18 from 12:00 PM (ET) to 6:00 PM (ET) for all three days. There is no fee to participate in the workshop. For each session, there will be up to 9 presentations and 2 discussion sessions. We would like to encourage participation from synchrotron facilities worldwide.

Synchrotron Radiation Macromolecular Crystallography has been on the forefront of biological studies requiring access to structural information. It has seen several major updates and new developments ranging from sample standards, robotic sample changers, micro-focus beamlines, pixel array detectors to distributed and automated data processing, and the list goes on. In the last few years, several major facilities began operation and a few more were upgraded to what is the state of the art today. Along these upgrades, all facilities have updated and upgraded equipment, high performance computing and the associated software to allow researchers to continue pursuing the most impactful areas of life science research. In the coming years, more facilities will be upgraded, including two in the US. All of these advances are required for groups from academia and industry to increase their rate of discovery, relying on either the brightest beams to tackle the most challenging projects, or on higher levels of automation, so that researchers can not only achieve more, but most importantly can invest valuable time in tackling the difficult projects and rely on automation for their other projects. In this workshop, we will have presentations dealing with sample automation and standards (March 16; chair Jean Jakoncic), about high data rate MX analysis (March 17; chair Dale Kreitler), and on user interfaces and remote access (March 18; chair Martin Fuchs). In all sessions, we will emphasize the current state of the art and planned upgrades. Ideally, we would like the spirit of the workshop to be cooperative, even sparking collaborations to elaborate common solutions to deal with common problems.

MX Macromolecular Training Workbench

Motivation
This workbench is a three half-day virtual training class aimed at researchers that would like to know more about fore-front techniques and methods employed at the macromolecular crystallography beamlines at the Center for Biomolecular Structure at BNL. A short introduction to the methods will provided while focus will be on study of advanced methods. Attendees will be provided time to collect and analyze data from their own samples. This will serve to train and recruit new researchers to MX and provide the opportunity to obtain preliminary data to use in a beamtime proposal request to sustain a solid community at the FMX and AMX beamlines.Topics: Macromolecular crystallography, serial crystallography and radiation damage.
About 17-ID-1 AMX Beamline
The beamline offers ultrabright (>4 1012 ph.s-1) x-rays delivered by a canted in-vacuum undulator source (IVU21) with x-ray energies ranging from 5keV to 18keV and a beam size of 7*5 μm2.
The beamline has an adaptable optical system consisting of white beam slits, a double crystal Si(111) monochromator with horizontal theta-axis, tandem flat beam deflecting silicon mirrors (Pd and Si lanes) and Kirkpatrick-Baez focusing silica mirrors, which are Pd coated and able to bent adaptively using 16 piezo actuators.
Each optical element is preceded by slits and its transmitted beam is monitored by beam position monitors or retractable screens.
About 17-ID-2 FMX Beamline
The Frontier Microfocusing Macromolecular Crystallography (FMX) delivers a flux of 3.5x1012 ph/s at 1 Ã... wavelength into a 1x1.5 to 10x10 µm2 (VxH) variable beam focus, covering an energy range from 5 - 30 keV. Its flux density surpasses current MX beamlines by up to two orders of magnitude.
The FMX optical system features a highly stable horizontal bounce Si 111 double crystal monochromator, as well as 16-segment bimorph bending mirrors in a single stage vertical and a dual stage horizontal focusing scheme. More...

Within this Conference there is the Michael G. Rossmann Memorial Symposium which focuses on the application of hybrid methods in electron microscopy of viruses, enzymes and other macromolecules, areas in which Michael was a pioneer.
The symposium will feature invited talks from Prof. Hao Wu (Harvard Medical School), Prof. Rui Zhao (University of Colorado School of Medicine), and Prof. Chuan (River) Xiao (University of Texas El Paso).

We invite abstracts from speakers in academics and industry at all career levels who develop and apply cutting-edge structural biology approaches to the study of viruses, viral proteins, enzymes, membrane proteins, and other systems. Ten abstracts will be selected for 15-minute oral presentations whereas the remaining abstracts will have the opportunity to be selected for poster presentations. Please note that the deadline for abstract submission is February 18, 2021. You will have the opportunity to select your preference for either in-person or virtual presentation.
PDB50: A Special Symposium Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Protein Data Bank

On May 4-5, 2021, a special symposium will be hosted by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
PDB50 will mark an important milestone in the history of structural biology. In 1971, the structural biology community established the single worldwide archive for macromolecular structure data â€" the Protein Data Bank (PDB). From its inception, the PDB has embraced a culture of open access, leading to its widespread use by the research community. PDB data are used by hundreds of data resources and millions of users exploring fundamental biology, energy and biomedicine.
Structural biology and structural bioinformatics have had an enormous impact on our understanding of the mechanism and function of biological macromolecules. The PDB acts as a custodian for all these data, representing a repository of the vast majority of the achievements and milestones of the structural biology community. The archive is managed by the Worldwide Protein Data Bank consortium (wwPDB) of partner sites in Asia, Europe and America.
This celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Protein Data Bank as the first open access digital data resource in biology will include presentations from speakers from around the world who have made tremendous advances in structural biology and bioinformatics. Students and postdoctoral fellows are especially encouraged to attend and will be eligible for poster awards.
The online sessions will take place between 11 a.m. â€" 4:30 p.m. EST each day.
The event will be recorded and made available to registered participants after the meeting.

BCA BSG Winter Meeting

Our Winter meeting celebrates Rosalind Franklin’s 100th Birthday with a line-up of world-leading international speakers presenting some of the newest and exciting achievements in structural biology, including a substantial number of presentations related to SARS-CoV-2.We are also delighted that Professor Matthew Cobb from the University of Manchester will open our meeting with a historical account of the life and times of Rosalind Franklin.

CASP14 (Critical Assessment of protein Structure Prediction) Conference

Following ground-breaking developments in 2018 (CASP13), CASP14 will present another round of exciting progress in the field. The conference will be virtual and will run from November 30 through December 4, 2020. There will be a limited number of talks and discussions each day, lasting a total of not more than 4 hours. The session times are 10:00AM-2:00PM (EST); 16:00-20:00 (CET). Poster breakouts and extra discussions will be arranged before and after the formal sessions.
The purpose of the conference is to analyze and discuss the outcome of the CASP14 community experiment. Assessors will report on the accuracy of protein structure modeling in a number of categories, including three-dimensional structure, structure refinement, modeling of protein complexes, and the ability of models to provide functional insight. Deep learning has already made a major impact in this field and will be a theme of the meeting. In addition to the assessments, there will be talks from modeling groups, posters, round tables, and extensive discussions. The program is being finalized and will be available on the Prediction Center website. We hope that the conference will generate ongoing interest group activities. There will be a follow-up in-person meeting next summer, Covid-19 permitting.
