The aim of the course is to teach the basic principles and practical aspects of image processing to structural and molecular biologists wishing to determine macromolecular structures by cryo EM. The course will concentrate on processing of high-resolution image data, for both single particle images and tomograms, and will be aimed at advanced PhD students and postdocs using cryo EM for structural analysis.

Engineering recombinant proteins for structural and functional studies

The programme will address the limiting step in structural studies - the production of
pure and homogenous proteins. Talks and discussions at this event will explore strategies
to optimize membrane and soluble proteins for crystallization, cryo-EM and NMR studies.
Discussions will include construct optimization, novel thermostability assays,
crystallization tools and `tricks of the trade' to enable structure determination.
This event is particlarly directed toward early-stage graduate students in structural biology.
However, anyone interested in generating soluble proteins for a variety of applications,
such as enzymatic assays and antibody production, would be welcome to attend.
Manufacturers of instruments and techniques to assay purity and homogeneity
will be available for hands-on demonstrations.

EMBO Practical Course: Small Angle Neutron and X-ray Scattering from Biomacromolecules in Solution

This EMBO Practical Course will focus on the use of small angle scattering of both neutrons and X-rays for the determination of the structures of biological macromolecules. Particular attention will be paid towards sample preparation and the analysis and interpretation of small angle scattering data in a biological context.
The course will consist of lectures, tutorials and practicals, taking advantage of the location of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility and the Institut Laue Langevin on the same scientific campus in Grenoble.Â

modelling techniques to address the three-dimensional structure of
challenging biomolecular complexes. Participants will collect data at
on-site structural biology facilities, analyse these data and subsequently

Frolic Goats: High-Pressure Diffraction Workshop

Its primary goal is to disseminate practical skills allowing one to perform high-pressure experiments in an x-ray lab, and to outline possibilities to continue one's studies at dedicated high-pressure beamlines in synchrotrons, nuclear reactors and spallation sources.
Modern x-ray diffraction equipment installed in most laboratories can be used for high-pressure experiments straightforwardly, or after few minor modifications - these modifications can be as simple as mounting a shorter collimator and re-positioning the beam-stop to provide space for the diamond- anvil cell (DAC). The DAC is a simple and relatively cheap device, so crystal structures in high pressure can be studied in most x-ray labs.

The course will consist of one week of lectures and exercises and one week of practical training at the neutron scattering facilities at Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum MLZ. The course aims to give a realistic insight into the experimental technique and its scientific power.
Students of physics, chemistry, material science and biosciences are invited to apply for participation. There is no tuition fee. Accommodation and meals during the course will be provided by JCNS. Travel expenses will be reimbursed within reasonable limits. Deadline for application is 12th May 2019.

17th European Powder Diffraction Conference - EPDIC17

The European Powder Diffraction Conference, EPDIC, is a biannual conference dedicated to all aspects of the analysis of polycrystalline materials by diffraction methods. Each EPDIC has the aim to highlight the latest developments in powder diffraction including methodology, data analysis and instrumental advances. EPDICs traditionally bring together scientists from institutes, universities and instrumentation companies to discuss the progress in academic and industrial research related to powder diffraction. The 17th edition of EPDIC (EPDIC17) will take place in the town of Šibenik, an emerging star of the Croatian Adriatic coast.

RapiData is a practical course in macromolecular X-ray diffraction data collection, data processing and structure solution. The aim of the RapiData course is to educate and train young scientists in data collection and processing methods at synchrotron beamlines, using state-of-the-art software and instrumentation. The course will be held at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL) located on the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory campus in Menlo Park, CA, from May 5-10 2019. It will comprise a series of lectures covering all steps of Single-particle cryoEM (from sample preparation to data collection and image processing).

Croucher Summer Course on Neutron Scattering

This five-day intensive course will act as an introduction to neutron scattering aimed at postgraduate students and early-career researchers, and will focus on fundamental scattering theory and hands-on data analysis. The techniques to be covered include diffraction, small angle scattering, quasielastic neutron scattering, and inelastic neutron scattering. The conference will be held at the new China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), about 60 miles north of Hong-Kong, which produced its first neutrons in 2017.Â
The registration fee for the course is $3000 HKD ($400 USD), which will include food and accommodation costs. Travel expenses will not be covered.Â

organizing the First FEI-I2PC Cryo-EM Course on Scipion
*for Facilities*, focused on Facilities needs
in data management and processing and how they can be served by Scipion.
Our Scipion team and collaborators have been working in the last years
in what we call streaming processing. We understand the importance of
having feedback during acquisition and this is precisely what will be
covered in this course. From basic processing like movie alignment and
CTF estimation on the fly, to automatic picking and extraction. Scipion
is equipped with several consensus protocols that might help in your
automated pipeline to screen and select the best micrograph, CTFs or
particles. All with the benefit of Scipion flexibility and ?mix and
match? capabilities. Scipion is also able to gather all the processing
information and present it in a HTML report that could be served over
the web and automatically refreshed. Additionally, Scipion API allows
the integration with your LIMS system. Currently released Scipion 1.2
goes in streaming all the way to particle extraction, and during the
course we will present current work in 2D classification and initial
volume, in collaboration with XMIPP team.
The topic of general pipelines for Single Particle Analysis with Scipion
will also be covered, as it will be Scipion usage on the cloud.
We are targeting a maximum of 20 attendees, and we count with?10
accommodation grants for students and Senior researchers from Instruct
countries.
