The organisers aim to promote interdisciplinary contacts between Belgian scientists operating in different fields of structural analysis. Therefore the organisers welcome poster contributions in all fields of condensed matter chemistry and physics, life sciences, material sciences, earth sciences, pharmaca, synchrotron radiation, neutron sources. Lecturers include T. Bergfors, E. Alekseev, J. Hadermann, L. Aerts and Y. Kerremans.

Join us in Bedford, Massachusetts for a two day symposium with several events to participate in covering all of the interests in protein crystallization. On Thursday, October 16th, we are excited to invite the New England (and beyond) crystallization community to our office for a Formulatrix user group meeting and round table, our first ever Advances in Protein Crystallography Conference, and an evening mixer with live entertainment and open bar. On Friday, October 17th, we will turn the floor over to the JCIMPT lab of The Scripps Research Institute as they host an LCP Tools & Technologies Workshop.

As part of the celebration of the International year of Crystallography (2014), Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi and Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB), Gurgaon are jointly organizing a Symposium-cum-Workshop entitled "Frontiers of Structural Biology: New Advances in X-ray Diffraction and Cryo-electron Microscopy" during December 15-17, 2014 at INSA premises witha view to bringing together leading scientists in the field to discuss the major new advances in Structural Biology. The meeting will focus primarily on progressive developments in macromolecular crystallography, Cryo-electron Microscopy and X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) Sources for structure determination.

The three day event will feature keynote lectures, poster presentations and workshop tutorials by distinguished experts from India and overseas. The workshop is highly encouraging participation of young scientists from India as well as the South Asian and Asia-Pacific region.

This meeting will bring together physicists, chemists and biologists to focus on the recent developments in experiment, modeling and theory of self-assembling biopolymeric systems. Such systems will range from proteins and peptides, to DNA, glycopolymers and carbohydrates.

Following on from the very successful inaugural event of 2011, the IOP Materials and Characterisation group are pleased to announce another one day Cultural Heritage Science event. The objective is to introduce and discuss both cutting edge and traditional science behind the preservation of our heritage, and the ethical framework which shapes its experiments. For this event we have a select number of invited speakers who are experts in their respective field. The topics under discussion will embrace a diverse range such as ethics in heritage science, heritage materials, museum artefacts and their conservation, and different scientific techniques and their applicability.

The event offers a fantastic occasion for new and experienced colleagues along with those with a curious interest to share best practice and build relationships for future collaborative research. The meeting will take place in the newly opened Mary Rose Museum at Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard and will conclude with a guided tour of the new museum and excellent conservation facilities. Places are limited due to the venue size and so early registration is advised.

Symposium: Advanced Structure Determination Techniques for Understanding the Atomic Mechanism of Complex Biological Functions on 15th October

Various methods for structural studies, such as X-ray crystallography (PX), X-ray small angle scattering (SAXS), cryoEM and molecular simulation, have been evolved very rapidly in the last decade. Combinations of these techniques reveal dynamic aspect of the molecular mechanism of biological macromolecular complexes based on the atomic structures. This symposium celebrates the International Year of Crystallography (IYCr) in 2014 and will highlight several recent results on structural studies on membrane proteins and huge protein complexes by X-ray crystallography together with recent advance of important techniques for structural life sciences.

Six renowned structural biologists, two per country, have accepted to present their latest achievements and to give an overview of on-going developments in the field of biocrystallography.

This meeting intends to feature contributions from scientists having built the technical advances of (bio)molecular crystallography as well as from researchers having applied these advances to achieve milestone insights into hot topics in structural (bio)chemistry.

This year, Max F. Perutz, the Austrian Nobel Prize winner after whom our laboratories are named, would have turned 100. On this occasion, the Max F. Perutz Laboratories (MFPL) of the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna would like to invite you to the symposium "Crossing Frontiers in Life Sciences".Â

For the event, we have invited 14 highly renowned scientists, as well as 10 MFPL researchers to talk about structural biology, cell signaling, bioinformatics, RNA biology, and chromosome dynamics. A poster session will give PhDs and Postdocs of MFPL the opportunity to present their research. The talk and poster sessions as well as the conference dinner will be a great chance for scientists to network and exchange their ideas.

Crystallography as vehicle to promote Science in Africa and beyond

The event will consist of a three-day Workshop [12-15 October] in the form of high-level scientific presentations, also by young scientists in particular. This will be followed by the IYCr2014 Summit Meeting [15-17 October] as platform wherein Science Policy Makers in Africa will be brought together, and ways to promote the expansion of Science in Africa are explored and debated.

Participants are welcomed from across Africa and beyond.

The 2014 Kuo Symposium on 3D Cryo-EM Molecular Imaging to be held July 28 - 30, 2014, in Shanghai, China. There will be a two-day workshop: The 7th K. H. Kuo Summer School of Electron Microscopy & Crystallography (July 26 - 27) immediately before the symposium. The symposium is partially sponsored by the K.H. Kuo Education Fund and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The scientific program is being arranged by an organizing committee that includes Huilin Li (SUNY Stony Brook, USA), Yifan Cheng (UCSF, USA), Yao Cong (SIBCB, China) and Yongning He (SIBCB, China).

As a background, the annual EM meeting series is named after the late Prof K.H. Kuo, a prominent electron microscopist who discovered quasi-crystals and first introduced cryo-EM to China, who also trained a generation of electron microscopists in China, including some of us organizing this symposium/summer school. The Kuo Education Fund was established by his over 100 former graduate students as a tribute to Kuo as a great scientist and a loving mentor. The subject of the school series alternates between biology and material science. The cryoEM meeting has evolved from a summer school aimed to bring modern cryoEM technology to Chinese students into an important international symposium in the field of cryoEM in Asia. It has witnessed rapid growth of cryoEM community in China as well as other Asia countries. The last (3rd) biological cryo-EM meeting was held in Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) in September 2012 and was chaired by Hong Zhou ( http://cryoem.csp.escience.cn/dct/page/1) and attended by students from mainland China, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore and Europe.

As part of the events to celebrate the International Year of Crystallography, the one-day symposium "University of Malaya Pharmaceutical Co-Crystal Symposium 2014" will focus on co-crystal technology, especially as it relates to the pharmaceutical industry.

Prof. Mike Zaworokto (University of Limerick and UM Academic Icon) is the plenary lecturer for the event.

To celebrate IYCr2014, the Egyptian National Committee of Crystallography (ENCC) in Cooparation with the Egyptian Society of Crystallography and its Applications (ESCA) organize a Symposium on Structural Role of Crystallography in Pharmacological Sciences.

ObjectivesÂ

The process of curing a disease starts with identifying its target protein that is considered a building block in a wide range of pharmacological applications. With the three-dimensional structures of both the target protein and the appropriate medicinal compounds, extensive information can be combined to help developing better drugs. X-ray crystallography comprises the most important technique for determining the 3D-structures, and it plays a major role to identify the active conformation adopted by a protein excluding the inactive one(s). This symposium focuses on the powerful contribution of Crystallography in the field of Pharmacology, by shedding light on the basic concepts and approaches.

The upcoming ESS Science Symposium: "Surface and Interface Reconstruction: A Challenge for Neutron Reflectometry" will take place at the Hotel Seeblick Bernried, which is located at the waterfront of the scenic Lake Starnberg South of Munich, Germany.Â

With the 61st Benzon Symposium: `Structural Biology on the Move' we wish to highlight a collection of the most intriguing analytical challenges in the light of selected splendid achievements within structural biology. Notably, we will cover magnitudes of length-scales, from high-resolution analysis to whole-cell imaging, promoting current important development within hybrid structural analysis, where methods across boundaries between established and emerging disciplines are applied. With the 61st Benzon Symposium, we aim to envision the grand opportunities that are to come in structural biology.

EMBL Hamburg will celebrate its 40th anniversary in November 2014. The core of the meeting will be a scientific symposium with a series of captivating talks dedicated to the past, present and future of the institute and its contribution to the field of structural biology. Several distinguished scientists with close ties to EMBL Hamburg will lead the symposium, representing an outstanding variety of perspectives and topics. The presentations will reflect on dramatic past and present changes for leading research infrastructures in structural biology, highlighted by the recent opening of the PETRA III storage ring and the expected opening of the X-FEL in 2016. In an opening lecture, Michael Rossmann will give an expanded overview of his own seminal achievements and those of the community over more than five decades.

The celebrations will feature a prestigious reception in honour of the symposium at Hamburg Town Hall, tours of the EMBL and other facilities on the DESY campus and many opportunities to interact and connect with fellow researchers and colleagues.

Along with present staff and our alumni from the past four decades, external users of the structural biology platforms at EMBL Hamburg are warmly invited to participate.
