Crystallization takes place in most physical, biological, and chemical systems, and is exploited today in thousands of applications, from production of commodities to that of pharmaceuticals, food ingredients and fine chemicals. Research is active on a broad range of topics from fundamentals to applications, and has lead to new results and products in recent years. These developments of crystallization processes from molecules to devices lead to a better control of product quality and sustainable process.
The ISIC (International Symposium on Industrial Crystallization) series is organized by the Working Party on Crystallization of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE). Like the previous editions, ISIC19 aims to provide a unique opportunity for exchange between scientists and engineers of all disciplines, academia and industry, and between novice and expert. ISIC 19 presents a broad overview of the science and technology of crystallization with contributions from all continents.

Introduction
Nanotechnology, especially nanoparticle research, has played very important roles in many scientific discoveries, laying the foundation for their applications in many aspects of our life, such as healthcare, efficient energy, cleaner environments. The field is moving very quickly, with an increasing number of researchers. This Faraday Discussion will focus on one very fundamental issue of nanoparticle (NP) research: functionalisation, relating specifically to biomedical applications. Without the right functionalisation, NPs will be rendered useless. So, how can NPs be synthesised with the desired functionality?ÂAims
This very focused meeting will promote deep discussions on a topic many other meetings have failed to debate; the whole field would stand still without the appropriate functionalisations for specific applications. We therefore aim to discuss in depth this very important issue which would help to harness the full potential of nanoparticle research.Format
The Faraday Division have been organising high impact Faraday Discussions in rapidly developing areas of physical chemistry and its interfaces with other scientific disciplines for over 100 years.ÂFaraday Discussions have a special format where research papers written by the speakers are distributed to all participants before the meeting, and most of the meeting is devoted to discussing the papers. Everyone contributes to the discussion - including presenting their own relevant research. The research papers and a record of the discussion are published in the journal Faraday Discussions.Â
Themes
- Noble metal NPs: Novel synthesis of Au and Ag NPs, for example, and better understanding of surface chemistry and interactions between NPs and ligands
- Quantum dots: Novel syntheses and novel biofunctionalisation to enhance quantum yield of quantum dots, as well as being a protective layer for biomedical applications
- Magnetic NPs: Novel syntheses for enhanced magnetic properties and functionalisation for specific targets in vivo
- Carbon nanotube & graphite/graphene and other NPs: There is very limited literature on biomedical applications of this type of material. Therefore, biofunctionalisation is a very important aspect of this research topic Â
ESPS2014. European Symposium of Photopolymer Science

The field of photopolymer science continues year after year to steadily advance fueled both by academic enthusiasm and by industrial pragmatism. The numerous environmental and economic benefits of light induced chemistry make these technologies popular for manufacturers and fabricators within a wide range of different industrial sectors.Â
The European Symposium of Photopolymer Science (ESPS) aims to bring together the brightest minds from both academia and industry to collectively present and discuss the fundamental issues within this still burgeoning field. The meeting consists of seminars from not just European but international leaders of photopolymer science with topics addressing critical issues such as photochemistry, reaction kinetics, analytical methods, photoinitiator and monomer synthesis, structure-property relations, polymer processing, as well as applications.
The first ESPS meeting was held in Mulhouse, France in 2010 and the second meeting took place in Torino, Italy in September 2012.  Looking to continue a tradition of excellence set by the two previous meetings, the Vienna University of Technology will host the Third Symposium.
It is the intention of the organizers to provide ample time for discussion to emphasize the workshop character and stimulate the exchange of new ideas. The program will be mainly based on invited talks given by respectable scientists working in the field of photopolymer science. In addition, other contributed papers with 15 minutes allotted for presentations as well as posters may be submitted.Â

IYCr2014 Symposium celebrating Barkla, Bragg and Shechtman

A symposium is arranged to celebrate the award of an honorary degree to Professor Shechtman (Nobel prize 2011) as well as to celebrate the contributions of Charles Barkla and Lawrence Bragg as part of the International Year of Crystallography activities. Barkla, a Liverpool graduate and a staff of the University, played a key role in establishing X-ray Crystallography (Nobel prize 1917), while Lawrence Bragg established the fundamental basis of X-ray Crystallography (Nobel prize 1915) as well as the International Union of Crystallography.
This one day symposium features academics from around the world â€" Japan, USA, Israel, Brazil and the UK, and celebrates the International Year of Crystallography 2014 which aims to raise the profile of a little know science behind DNA, Computer memory and new drugs.Â
Crystallography underpins many fields yet it rarely gains attention in its own right. Crystallographic experiments underpin the development of practically all new materials, from everyday ones like toothpaste, chocolate and computer memory, to advanced car and aerospace components and offers scientists a useful insight into the structure of protein - and from there, they can develop experiments which could help drug discoveries. Modern drug development and nano and biotechnology are all based on crystallographic results, allowing scientists to design powerful new materials and drugs.Â
The symposium will recognise the work of Barkla and Bragg and mark the award of an honorary doctorate to Professor Danny Shechtman, who will talk about the discovery of icosahedral phase and the field of quasi-periodic crystals. It forms part of the University of Liverpool’s successful Science and Society lectures which aims to promote a series of interdisciplinary lectures exploring the beneficial relationship between science and society.

Understanding the mechanism of physical, chemical and biological change at the microscopic scale is critical for a broad range of science and technology. A common goal is to develop this understanding to the point where it becomes possible to tailor functionality through material design, or by the application of electric, magnetic or optical fields. Across a broad range of disciplines the scientific community is currently frustrated by its inability to dynamically image matter down to the atomic scale. We can at present only observe relatively slow motion changes to structure, or infer dynamical effects via indirect measurements. Yet many critically important processes evolve on the femtosecond timescale and at the molecular and sub-cellular level requiring nanometre and sub-nanometre scale spatial resolution. The properties of light from newly developing photon sources such as free electron lasers (FELs) are dramatically different from those of storage rings (in terms of spectral brightness), and from conventional lasers (in terms of wavelength range). In the course of the last few years FELs and other sources have emerged as exceptionally exciting tools for new science. For example, new results from FLASH (Hamburg) and LCLS (Stanford) are already revealing prospects for remarkable future impact which is expected to revolutionize our understanding of mechanisms in, for example, solution phase chemistry, enzyme and surface catalysis and DNA photo-induced radiation damage. Other machines in Germany (European XFEL), Italy, Japan, and Korea are progressing rapidly towards the first generation of light and UK physicists and chemists are starting to establish a strong presence at these facilities.Aims
It is timely to hold a Faraday Discussion which focuses on the potential impact in chemistry. Because the subject by its very nature is highly inter-disciplinary we anticipate strong participation from physicists as well as chemists. Indeed, many of the initial studies have focused on atoms, rather than molecules, but the techniques used are directly transferable.Format

In particular, the ISXB-1 will encompass both traditional XB core areas, e.g. crystal engineering and molecular modeling, and less established fields, like, among others, catalysis and polymer chemistry.

ISSRNS is a series of meetings, organised every two years, devoted to recent advances and new techniques employing synchrotron radiation in physics, chemistry, materials science, biology and medicine.
The 12th International School and Symposium on Synchrotron Radiation in Natural Science (ISSRNS 2014) will be organized by Polish Synchrotron Radiation Society (PTPS) in cooperation with two Polish institutions, the Institute of Physics, of the Polish Academy of Sciences, (Warsaw) and National Centre for Nuclear Physics, (Otwock/Świerk) from 15th to  20th of June 2014 in Warsaw (Poland).  ISSRNS is a traditional forum for discussing fundamental issues of application of the synchrotron radiation and related methods in natural sciences. The aim of this interdisciplinary meeting is to bring together scientists working with synchrotron radiation. The Symposium will focus on novel applications of synchrotron radiation in physics, chemistry, material science, biology and medicine.THE TOPICS OF ISSRNS 2014 INCLUDE:

Meeting Summary
G protein-coupled receptors are essential for intercellular communication in multicellular organisms and they are also the targets for many drugs already in use or under development, for the treatment of, for example, cardiovascular disease, asthma, cancer, neurological dysfunction and metabolic disorders. The field of GPCR biology has undergone a radical transformation with the structure determination of over 15 different GPCRs, including the first complex of an activated GPCR bound to a heterotrimeric G protein. This wealth of structural detail is now being translated into both a deeper understanding of GPCR function and into the development of new therapeutics. Structure is, however, only capable of defining atomic details of particular conformational states of a receptor. This meeting will focus on how an integration of structural data and information from experiments that study molecular dynamics in vitro, in vivo and in silico can be integrated to form an in-depth view of GPCR function. In addition, key therapeutic areas of cancer, inflammation and disorders of the central nervous system will be highlighted in relation to the development of novel therapeutics targeting GPCRs.
