The American Crystallographic Association is excited to announce the 68th Annual Meeting to be held from July 20 to 24, 2018 in beautiful downtown Toronto, Canada.
The conference will take place at the Sheraton City Centre Hotel and will offer many opportunities to network, learn and collaborate with fellow scientists, students and professionals.Â
Join your fellow colleagues for the Opening Reception featuring keynote speaker John Polanyi, winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, visit the expansive Exhibit Show and stay to attend the Closing Banquet.
There will be special sessions this year dedicated to remembering our colleagues Dick Marsh and Philip Coppens. First Erice International School on Quantum Crystallography. 52nd Erice Course

This is the inaugural School on Quantum Crystallography at Erice. Quantum Crystallography refers to the combination of crystallographic information from diffraction or other scattering techniques with quantum mechanical theory. It is also an extension of quantum chemistry to periodic systems.
The School attempts to give a snapshot of this evolving field, complete with workshops demonstrating state-of-the art software. Topics will include: the beginnings of the Quantum Crystallography in the measurement of the electron charge or spin density; the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem and the importance of the X-ray diffraction experiment; multipole-based models for the charge density; polarizable-density models; momentum based experiments and orbital density expansions; joint refinement of charge, spin, and momentum density.
Registration is open (will close on 30 November 2017)

Satellite School of the 24th IUCr Congress 2017
The main focus of the event is the symmetry analysis of structural phase transitions in functional materials like ferroics and multiferroics. The first four days would cover fundamental crystallographic topics related to space group symmetry and its representation in International Tables for Crystallography, symmetry relations between space groups including group-subgroup and group-supergroup relationships, structure descriptions and comparison, crystal structure relationships. The last two days would be devoted to brief introduction to space group representations and their application in the analysis of structural phase transitions. The lecture sessions will be accompanied by hands on practical sessions on description of space groups in International Tables for Crystallography, Vol. A and online training for determination of subgroups of space groups, crystal structure relations and pseudosymmetry, representations of space groups and symmetry-mode analysis using Bilbao Crystallographic Server.

The aim of the school is to provide an introduction to group theoretical methods and tools necessary for appropriate applications of symmetry properties in solid state material science. Special emphasis is given to tutorials on computational crystallography using the Bilbao Crystallographic Server (BCS) (www.cryst.ehu.es) for the study of specific problems in solid state physics, like phase transitions, and their symmetry-mode analysis, comparison between crystal structures, magnetic symmetry and its applications in the description of magnetic structures, etc. The applications of BCS tools to ab initio calculations is specifically discussed for the study of ferroelectric polarization in organic and inorganic crystalline structures, phonon properties and computational materials design by structure prediction.
The school is intended for scientists in Material Science, Solid State Physics and Crystallography in general and specifically for graduate students and young researchers interested in a deep and practical knowledge of group theory and crystallography as applied in material science. The maximum number of participant is limited to 70. Official language of the School is English. The Summer School To.Sca.Lake 2.0: Total Scattering for Nanotechnology on the Como Lake offers an extended overview on Total Scattering Techniques (from X-rays to visible light) for Nanotechnology, complemented by lectures on synthesis and applications of advanced nanomaterials.
