The Latin American Powder Diffraction Conference (LAPDiC) will be an event in Latin America entirely dedicated to all aspects of the analysis of polycrystalline materials using diffraction methods (X-rays, neutrons, and electrons). Inspired by the successful European Powder Diffraction Conference (EPDIC ), LAPDiC aims to become an itinerary conference for researchers in the field across Latin America and beyond, serving as an ideal platform for presenting and disseminating new developments in powder diffraction instrumentation, analysis techniques, and scientific applications.

LAPDiC will bring together experts from universities, research institutes, and industry partners to share their knowledge, discuss current trends, and tackle challenges in powder diffraction. The event will provide a unique opportunity for professionals in the region to network, foster collaborations, and build a more robust scientific community.

The LAPDiC organizing committee, in collaboration with the Latin American Crystallographic Association (LACA) and the Brazilian Crystallographic Association (ABCr), is thrilled to invite you to Fortaleza, CE, Brazil, for the inaugural edition of the Latin American Powder Diffraction Conference.

Welcome to the 2nd Young Crystallographers Meeting, which will take place from December 2nd to 5th, 2025 in Rennes at the Institut des sciences chimiques de Rennes. This scientific event was planned by popular demand as a follow up of the YCM1, which happened in Strasbourg in 2023.
This meeting is intended for young crystallographers (researchers, doctoral students, post-doctoral students, and engineers) from all sciences combined and all European countries.

The multidisciplinary character of crystallography will be promoted during this event with sessions mixing talks from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mineralogy and Heritage Science fields.

The objectives of the YCM2 are to gather young crystallographers in a multidisciplinary and international context, to create opportunities for scientific exchange, and to provide networking opportunities with industry with a specific focus on the training and career development of the young scientist participants.

This intensive workshop combines state-of-the-art lectures and hands-on tutorials led primarily by expert members of the CCP4 and CCPEM communities, alongside Latin American researchers currently working in protein crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy. Participants will gain deep insight into the theory and extensive experience in data processing for these techniques, offering a unique opportunity to master essential tools and methods in macromolecular structure determination.

Fundamentals and Practices of Macromolecule Crystallography Using Synchrotron Light: From Protein Crystallization to Structural Determination

This four-day workshop aims to provide theoretical and practical training in the foundations and advanced techniques of protein crystallography. Among the main topics covered are protein crystallization, macromolecular X-ray crystallography (MX), data collection and processing, and new emerging trends in structural biology.

Fundamentals of Crystallography: Theory and Practice

 The Caribbean Regional X-ray Science Toward Advancement Laboratory (crXstal) was established in October 2024 in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology at The University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica, as a regional hub dedicated to capacity building in X-ray crystallography through education and research. Its primary objectives are: 1) to teach X-ray crystallography through short courses, training schools and outreach activities aimed at popularizing the technique especially among youth; 2) to facilitate cutting-edge research that address regional challenges and position the Caribbean as a global leader in innovation and 3) crXstal is presently equipped with a Bruker D8 Quest Eco single-crystal diffractometer and an Oxford Diffraction cryostat.

Topics to be covered: Symmetry in crystals. Lattices, unit cells, point groups and space groups. Diffraction of X-rays by crystals. Bragg’s Law. The reciprocal lattice and the Ewald Sphere. Systematic absences, structure factors and electron densities. Use of the International Tables for Crystallography Vol. A. Crystal growth techniques. Crystal selection and mounting. Data collection and reduction. Structure solution and refinement. Structural analysis and reporting â€" molecular graphics and the CIF file. Use of various software packages for structure solution, refinement and display. Structure validation and publication. The Cambridge Structural Database. Introduction to crystallography using synchrotron radiation. Examples of applications of single crystal X-ray diffraction. The programme will include hands-on sessions on the Bruker D8 ECO Quest so students will have the opportunity to collect their own data and solve the structures.

Target Audience: Postgraduate students and researchers/ faculty members from any university, and Industry persons in a STEM discipline.Â

Pre-course Requirement: A voluntary, online two-day pre-course will be held one week before the start of the school with the aim of levelling the background. It will cover basic principles of symmetry and linear algebra with exercises.

Join us for the fifth series of our renowned workshop, "Hands-On Training in Structural Biology." This workshop will focus on utilizing AlphaFold for protein structural determination and applying these structures to screen small molecule compound libraries for drug discovery. Participants will also gain expertise in protein structural analysis and interpretation.

A preliminary bid prepared by Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and the Lviv Convention Bureau was discussed in 2019 during ECM33 in Vienna. However, in 2020, the entire world was paused by COVID-19. In 2021, during the XXV Congress and General Assembly of the International Union of Crystallography in Prague, the ECA Council accepted the bid from Lviv to host ECM35 in 2025. Unfortunately, in 2022, Russia began its war against Ukraine. During ECM33 in Versailles, the ECA Council confirmed Lviv as the hosting city of ECM35, but as the war continued, in 2023, the Polish Crystallographic Association and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan offered their support. Ultimately, ECM35 will have a binary location: Lviv and Poznan.

Now, a few words about Poznan, the city where ECM35 will eventually take place. Poznan is an old and beautiful city, and one of the largest academic and research centers in Poland. It is also one of the oldest and most important cities in the country. It can be argued that this is the place where Poland, as a country, was born more than a thousand years ago. I truly hope you will have the time (the organizers will certainly ensure this) to visit the most important historical sites here.

Experimental data are increasingly combined with computational methods in each and every step of the way within real life Biology projects. This advanced, hands-on workshop aims at filling in the gap, avoiding separate chapters for different techniques and instead mimicking real-life research, with these different components interacting all along the process. World experts in X-ray crystallography and Computational approaches (3D structure prediction, Molecular Dynamics simulations) will be invited to the staff of teachers/tutors. The workshop is conceived for 20-25 attendees: advanced graduate students, postdocs and young researchers working in Structural Biology, Protein Science and related areas. Scholarships will be available to cover students’ costs. The Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS) of the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) will host the third Workshop SMX â€" MX at Sirius for Fragment Screening. This two-day workshop will be one of the satellite events of the 34th LNLS Annual Users Meeting and aims to bring together the LNLS community â€" external users, including students, researchers, and professionals â€" and experts working in the fields of structural biology, protein crystallography, and drug discovery, to disseminate the use of fragment screening and its implementation at the Manacá beamline of the Sirius synchrotron.
