The International Association of Chemical Thermodynamics (IACT) and the South African Institution of Chemical Engineers (SAIChE) will be jointly hosting the International Conference on Chemical Thermodynamics (ICCT) and the SAIChE National Conference from 27 July 2014 to 1 August 2014 at the Durban International Convention Centre in Durban, South Africa. The short name of this joint conference is ICCT/SAIChE 2014.SAIChE is a professional association to which most chemical engineers in South Africa belong. The mission of SAIChE is to advance chemical engineering as a discipline and as a profession, and to serve the interests of its members and the community at large.
IYCr2014 Symposium celebrating Barkla, Bragg and Shechtman

A symposium is arranged to celebrate the award of an honorary degree to Professor Shechtman (Nobel prize 2011) as well as to celebrate the contributions of Charles Barkla and Lawrence Bragg as part of the International Year of Crystallography activities. Barkla, a Liverpool graduate and a staff of the University, played a key role in establishing X-ray Crystallography (Nobel prize 1917), while Lawrence Bragg established the fundamental basis of X-ray Crystallography (Nobel prize 1915) as well as the International Union of Crystallography.
This one day symposium features academics from around the world â€" Japan, USA, Israel, Brazil and the UK, and celebrates the International Year of Crystallography 2014 which aims to raise the profile of a little know science behind DNA, Computer memory and new drugs.Â
Crystallography underpins many fields yet it rarely gains attention in its own right. Crystallographic experiments underpin the development of practically all new materials, from everyday ones like toothpaste, chocolate and computer memory, to advanced car and aerospace components and offers scientists a useful insight into the structure of protein - and from there, they can develop experiments which could help drug discoveries. Modern drug development and nano and biotechnology are all based on crystallographic results, allowing scientists to design powerful new materials and drugs.Â
The symposium will recognise the work of Barkla and Bragg and mark the award of an honorary doctorate to Professor Danny Shechtman, who will talk about the discovery of icosahedral phase and the field of quasi-periodic crystals. It forms part of the University of Liverpool’s successful Science and Society lectures which aims to promote a series of interdisciplinary lectures exploring the beneficial relationship between science and society.

The Course on Powder Diffraction integrates the basic principles, common practices, and applications of X ray diffraction techniques for the analysis of polycrystalline samples. Particular attention will be paid at obtaining good experimental data for their appropriate use in different applications.
Three fundamental aspects constitute the core of the powder diffraction course: (1) use of X ray diffraction techniques for qualitative and quantitative analysis of polycrystalline materials; (2) use of the program GSAS-II (Structure refinement using the Rietveld Method); (3) Microstructure characterization (Use of the program PM2K2). These topics will be presented in the context of conventional X ray diffractometers and of synchrotron radiation.
The Invited Speakers are: Dr. Robert Von Dreele (Argonne National Laboratory, USA), Prof. James A. Kaduk (Illinois Institute of Technology, USA), Prof. Matteo Leoni (Universita degli Studi di Trento, Italy), and Prof. José Antonio Henao (Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia). Professors Asiloé J. Mora, Graciela Díaz de Delgado, Belkis Ramírez, Gerzon Delgado, and Miguel Delgado (ULA, Venezuela) and Dr. Alexander Briceño (IVIC, Venezuela) will also be instructors.
This event is being supported by Universidad de Los Andes (Venezuela), FONACIT (Venezuelan Science Funding Office) and the International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD).

12th International School and Symposium on Synchrotron Radiation in Natural Science
ISSRNS is a series of meetings, organised every two years, devoted to recent advances and new techniques employing synchrotron radiation in physics, chemistry, materials science, biology and medicine.
The 12th International School and Symposium on Synchrotron Radiation in Natural Science (ISSRNS 2014) will be organized by Polish Synchrotron Radiation Society (PTPS) in cooperation with two Polish institutions, the Institute of Physics, of the Polish Academy of Sciences, (Warsaw) and National Centre for Nuclear Physics, (Otwock/Świerk) from 15th to  20th of June 2014 in Warsaw (Poland).  ISSRNS is a traditional forum for discussing fundamental issues of application of the synchrotron radiation and related methods in natural sciences. The aim of this interdisciplinary meeting is to bring together scientists working with synchrotron radiation. The Symposium will focus on novel applications of synchrotron radiation in physics, chemistry, material science, biology and medicine.THE TOPICS OF ISSRNS 2014 INCLUDE:

La Plata, Argentina, 27 April - 10 May 2014The Commission on Mathematical and Theoretical Crystallography is strongly committed to promote education in all the fundamental aspects of crystallography that nowadays are overlooked in common University courses. This mission is accomplished through a series of meetings in a wide range of regions. In spring 2014 we organize a school in Argentina, in continuation of our activity in the region after the previous shools in Havana, in Montevideo and in in Uberlândia.
Pre-requisites
The participants are expected to know basic matrix algebra (how to multiply matrices and vectors, how to calculate determinant and trace of a matrix), fundamental electromagnetism (waves, diffraction) and basic chemistry.Note: There will be an introductory a one day preparatory session for students that need some help to comply with the prerequisites on Sunday April 27.

As you know, 2014 has been declared as the International Year of Crystallography by the UN (United Nations). Centenary of the birth of modern crystallography will be celebrated all over the world with symposiums, meetings, workshops and exhibitions held throughout the year. In this context, TUCr2014 is of particular importance for us and it has been listed in IYCr2014’s official page of events to be held in the world.
We invite all researchers and scientists who study in different fields including physics, chemistry, biology, pharmacology, materials, archeology and mineralogy and use X-ray techniques in their studies to attend and contribute our meeting. We hope TUCr2014 meeting will be a platform to increase recognition of crystallography in the public sphere, lead to national and international collaboration opportunities among participants and encourage young researchers working in this area.
It is also planned to realize a workshop titled as "Residual Stress and Texture Analysis by X-ray Diffraction" for graduate and doctoral students during the meeting. In this workshop courses and practical issues will be discussed. Students who will participate in the workshop and the meeting will be able to get support through TUBITAK.

Crystallography today presents tremendous development and is opening new possibilities in scientific research and technological innovation. It is a very diverse field and fundamentally interdisciplinary. It concerns any method to study how that manifests the crystalline arrangement of condensed matter at the atomic level, from theoretical calculations electron density to atomic force microscopy.Â
The Mexican Society of Crystallography has proposed to offer in its seventh National Congress, a number of Plenary Lectures illustrating the above. In particular, we have prepared seven courses and four workshops that cover topics of interest such as X-ray scattering at low angle, electron density, nanostructures, nanodifracción, atomic force microscopy, crystal chemistry, solid-state chemistry of metal oxides including traditional courses Introduction to Crystallography Crystallography and crystals.
For this seventh edition of the Congress, has been chosen to host the city of Villahermosa, capital of Tabasco, whose temperature in May ranges from 30 to 35 degrees Celsius.The Organizing Committee wishes you a very successful participation in this event waiting foster collaboration between different academic institutions of the country and foreign speakers will visit us.Â

"Crystallography @ 100: Looking to the future, learning from the past"
The 2014 Spring Meeting will follow the successful format used in recent years with the traditional Young Crystallographers’ satellite meeting on Monday 7 April, followed by the main meeting starting at lunchtime on Tuesday 8 April with the final session finishing at lunchtime on Thursday 10 April.Crystallography as a field of research has reached its centenary and 2014 has been designated by UNESCO as the International Year of Crystallography. The theme of the meeting is in tune with these milestones and will be "Crystallography @ 100: Looking to the future, learning from the past." The meeting logo incorporates an image of the X-ray diffraction pattern of NaCl reported by W. L. Bragg in the charmingly titled 1913 paper "The Structure of Some Crystals as Indicated by their Diffraction of X-rays" (Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A. 1913, 89, 248-277; doi:10.1098/rspa.1913.0083). We are grateful to the Royal Society for permission to include this image.

Strategic pipeline planning: from sample preparation to 3D structure determination with bio SAXS and other biophysical techniques
The location will be at the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF).The course will provide training on creating a roadmap towards determining the 3D structure of a macromolecular target including troubleshooting and rational decision-making. Emphasis will be given on Bio SAXS as a method of choice to characterize the structure of a single protein and protein complexes in solution coupled with X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and electron microscopy (EM). An overview of mainstream methods will also be presented and attention will be drawn to techniques developed the last years like X-ray imaging. In addition, the participants will have a chance to get informed about the options they have for career development. Overall, the course will enable the attendees to adopt a broader way of thinking and get acquainted with state-of-the-art approaches currently employed in structural biology. This will increase researchers' awareness on the facilities and services provided and capitalize on the investment that has already been made by Europe with the aim to promote innovative research.
Target Group & Selection process: The course targets mainly PhD students and post-doctoral scientists who are currently working in the structural biology field and have already some experience in working with macromolecules. Experienced researchers will also be considered but priority will be given to younger scientists. A total of 25 participants will be accepted in the course. The applicants will be expected to send a CV (max. 2 pages), a motivation letter (max. 1 page) explaining why they wish to participate and what they expect from the course and a reference letter. The Biostruct-X and local organizers will be responsible for the selection process to ensure that equivalent criteria will be applied.

The 12th Conference of the Asian Crystallographic Association
We cordially invite you to attend the 2013 Asian Crystallographic Association Meeting (AsCA'13), which will be held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong. The venue for the meeting has been moved from Dhaka, Bangladesh due to security concerns. The new dates for the meeting are 7-10 December 2013 (Sat - Tues). The meeting will cover diverse aspects of crystallographic research ranging from materials to life sciences and incorporating synchrotron and neutron studies. This meeting in 2013 is special since the International Union of Crystallography is celebrating the centenary of X-ray crystallography by the Braggs. The meeting is also a prelude to the upcoming International Year of Crystallography, IYCr2014.
