ICCT SAIChE Conference 2014

The International Association of Chemical Thermodynamics (IACT) and the South African Institution of Chemical Engineers (SAIChE) will be jointly hosting the International Conference on Chemical Thermodynamics (ICCT) and the SAIChE National Conference from 27 July 2014 to 1 August 2014 at the Durban International Convention Centre in Durban, South Africa. The short name of this joint conference is ICCT/SAIChE 2014.
SAIChE is a professional association to which most chemical engineers in South Africa belong. The mission of SAIChE is to advance chemical engineering as a discipline and as a profession, and to serve the interests of its members and the community at large.

A symposium is arranged to celebrate the award of an honorary degree to Professor Shechtman (Nobel prize 2011) as well as to celebrate the contributions of Charles Barkla and Lawrence Bragg as part of the International Year of Crystallography activities. Barkla, a Liverpool graduate and a staff of the University, played a key role in establishing X-ray Crystallography (Nobel prize 1917), while Lawrence Bragg established the fundamental basis of X-ray Crystallography (Nobel prize 1915) as well as the International Union of Crystallography.

This one day symposium features academics from around the world â€" Japan, USA, Israel, Brazil and the UK, and celebrates the International Year of Crystallography 2014 which aims to raise the profile of a little know science behind DNA, Computer memory and new drugs.Â

Crystallography underpins many fields yet it rarely gains attention in its own right. Crystallographic experiments underpin the development of practically all new materials, from everyday ones like toothpaste, chocolate and computer memory, to advanced car and aerospace components and offers scientists a useful insight into the structure of protein - and from there, they can develop experiments which could help drug discoveries. Modern drug development and nano and biotechnology are all based on crystallographic results, allowing scientists to design powerful new materials and drugs.Â

The symposium will recognise the work of Barkla and Bragg and mark the award of an honorary doctorate to Professor Danny Shechtman, who will talk about the discovery of icosahedral phase and the field of quasi-periodic crystals. It forms part of the University of Liverpool’s successful Science and Society lectures which aims to promote a series of interdisciplinary lectures exploring the beneficial relationship between science and society.

To celebrate several anniversaries of important crystallographic discoveries, and as a highlight of the International Year of Crystallography IYCr2014, the Committee of Crystallography of the Polish Academy of Sciences at its meeting on July 7, 2012, decided to organize, starting from 2014, an annual "National Crystallographic Olympiad" (Ogólnopolska Olimpiada Krystalograficzna). The first edition of the Olympiad will be held in the academic year 2013/14, and the finals will take place on June 25, 2014, in Wrocław.

The International Conference on Pure and Applied Chemistry (ICPAC) is a biennial event organised since 2010. ICPAC-2014 will be held from 23rd to 27th June 2014, in Mauritius. The Organising Committee has adopted the theme "Crystallising Ideas: The Role of Chemistry" for this event. This theme matches with the declaration of the Year 2014 as the International Year of Crystallography.
Chemistry is one of the subjects of Science for understanding and explaining makeup and changes of everything that has mass and occupies space. Chemistry has permeated the study of different branches of Science.
The World has condensed into a global village with progress in Science and Technology. However the World is now facing a crisis due to explosive increase in the demand of energy, food and water. Therefore, Science and Chemistry have crucial roles for sustaining the development of our planet.
The conference program will feature a wide variety of keynote, plenary, invited and contributed lectures, as well as poster sessions. There will also be workshops and symposia conducted by experts on different chemical aspects.
This conference will provide a platform for participants to share and discuss recent findings of their research covering all topics related to Chemistry and crystallise new ideas. It will also be an opportunity for participants to visit the island of Mauritius, famous for its sun, sea and sand and multicultural aspects.

In a joint effort of the Colombian and Venezuelan Societies of Crystallography, two courses on X Ray Diffraction Techniques are being organized: a course on X ray Powder Diffraction which will take place in Mérida, Venezuela, from June 23 to 27 of 2014, and a course on Single Crystal X Ray Diffraction which will take place in Bucaramanga, Colombia, in September. The participation is open to undergraduate and graduate students and young scientists from academic institutions, as well as professionals from the industrial sector. Students, young researchers, and professionals from other Latin-American countries are most welcome.
The Course on Powder Diffraction integrates the basic principles, common practices, and applications of X ray diffraction techniques for the analysis of polycrystalline samples. Particular attention will be paid at obtaining good experimental data for their appropriate use in different applications.
Three fundamental aspects constitute the core of the powder diffraction course: (1) use of X ray diffraction techniques for qualitative and quantitative analysis of polycrystalline materials; (2) use of the program GSAS-II (Structure refinement using the Rietveld Method); (3) Microstructure characterization (Use of the program PM2K2). These topics will be presented in the context of conventional X ray diffractometers and of synchrotron radiation.
The Invited Speakers are: Dr. Robert Von Dreele (Argonne National Laboratory, USA), Prof. James A. Kaduk (Illinois Institute of Technology, USA), Prof. Matteo Leoni (Universita degli Studi di Trento, Italy), and Prof. José Antonio Henao (Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia). Professors Asiloé J. Mora, Graciela Díaz de Delgado, Belkis Ramírez, Gerzon Delgado, and Miguel Delgado (ULA, Venezuela) and Dr. Alexander Briceño (IVIC, Venezuela) will also be instructors.

This event is being supported by Universidad de Los Andes (Venezuela), FONACIT (Venezuelan Science Funding Office) and the International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD).

12th International School and Symposium on Synchrotron Radiation in Natural Science

ISSRNS is a series of meetings, organised every two years, devoted to recent advances and new techniques employing synchrotron radiation in physics, chemistry, materials science, biology and medicine.

The 12th International School and Symposium on Synchrotron Radiation in Natural Science (ISSRNS 2014) will be organized by Polish Synchrotron Radiation Society (PTPS) in cooperation with two Polish institutions, the Institute of Physics, of the Polish Academy of Sciences, (Warsaw) and National Centre for Nuclear Physics, (Otwock/Świerk) from 15th to  20th of June 2014 in Warsaw (Poland).  ISSRNS is a traditional forum for discussing fundamental issues of application of the synchrotron radiation and related methods in natural sciences. The aim of this interdisciplinary meeting is to bring together scientists working with synchrotron radiation. The Symposium will focus on novel applications of synchrotron radiation in physics, chemistry, material science, biology and medicine.

CRYSTAL 29, the 29th Biennial Conference of the Society of Crystallographers in Australia and New Zealand, will be held in the O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, Mt Lamington Plateau, Queensland (http://www.oreillys.com.au), from April 22-25 2014.
The venue is located approximately 90 minutes drive from the Gold Coast or 2 hours drive from Brisbane. International School on Fundamental Crystallography

Fourth MaThCryst school in Latin America

La Plata, Argentina, 27 April - 10 May 2014
The Commission on Mathematical and Theoretical Crystallography is strongly committed to promote education in all the fundamental aspects of crystallography that nowadays are overlooked in common University courses. This mission is accomplished through a series of meetings in a wide range of regions. In spring 2014 we organize a school in Argentina, in continuation of our activity in the region after the previous shools in Havana, in Montevideo and in in Uberlândia.

Pre-requisites

The participants are expected to know basic matrix algebra (how to multiply matrices and vectors, how to calculate determinant and trace of a matrix), fundamental electromagnetism (waves, diffraction) and basic chemistry.
Note: There will be an introductory a one day preparatory session for students that need some help to comply with the prerequisites on Sunday April 27.

The 4th National Congress of Crystallography (TUCr2014) and “Residual Stress Analysis by X-Ray Diffraction and Texture" workshop hosted by Dicle University in Diyarbakir will be carried out on 16 to 19 May 2014.
As you know, 2014 has been declared as the International Year of Crystallography by the UN (United Nations). Centenary of the birth of modern crystallography will be celebrated all over the world with symposiums, meetings, workshops and exhibitions held throughout the year. In this context, TUCr2014 is of particular importance for us and it has been listed in IYCr2014’s official page of events to be held in the world.
We invite all researchers and scientists who study in different fields including physics, chemistry, biology, pharmacology, materials, archeology and mineralogy and use X-ray techniques in their studies to attend and contribute our meeting. We hope TUCr2014 meeting will be a platform to increase recognition of crystallography in the public sphere, lead to national and international collaboration opportunities among participants and encourage young researchers working in this area.
It is also planned to realize a workshop titled as "Residual Stress and Texture Analysis by X-ray Diffraction" for graduate and doctoral students during the meeting. In this workshop courses and practical issues will be discussed. Students who will participate in the workshop and the meeting will be able to get support through TUBITAK.

We are pleased to announce the first International Summer School of Crystallography at the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science at DESY, Hamburg (D). As part of the International Year of Crystallography 2014, Prof. Carmelo Giacovazzo will lecture on the basics of crystallography, as well as, the basics of modern phasing methods in protein crystallography covering basic mathematical understanding of crystallographic point and space groups, diffraction experiments, structure factor calculations, systematic absences, determination of space groups and many additional topics. Participants will also learn modern applications of protein crystallography using advanced light sources, such as 3rd generation synchrotron and XFELs.
The summer school program is geared for PhD students working in the field of crystallography, but exceptions for motivated PostDocs and MSc students can be made. The course will mostly cover mathematical background of crystallography, hence we are looking for students, having a (bio)physics background. This will NOT be a workshop covering protein crystallographic programs but rather will be theory oriented.

The workshop Hot Topics in Contemporary Crystallography will take place in Hotel Jakov, in the Solaris beach resort, near Šibenik, Croatia, from May, 10th to May, 15th, 2014. The official language of the workshop is English.

The Croatian Association of Crystallographers organizes this workshop to mark the 2014 - UN proclamed international year of crystallography in Croatia. Six "hot topics" will be addressed during the intense four working days of the workshop:

1. Hot topics in macromolecular crystallography (by prof. dr. Elspeth Garman, University of Oxford, UK),
2. The whole is more than the sum of its parts (by prof. dr. Hans-Beat Buergi, University of Bern, Switzerland),
3. Charge density (by prof. dr. Dietmar Stalke, University of Goettingen, Germany),
4. Absolute structure and absolute configuration (by prof. dr. Howard Flack, University of Geneve, Switzerland),
5. Twinning in crystallography (by dr. Regine Herbst-Irmer, University of Goettingen, Germany), and
6. Advanced solutions from the Cambridge Structural Database (by Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre, UK).

The workshop aims at:

• Promotion of excellence and innovation in crystallography,
• Transfer of state-of-the-art knowledge and know-how to the most talented and motivated PhD students and postdocs in crystallography and related disciplines,
• Popularization of crystallography, and
• Celebration of the International Year of Crystallography (2014) in Croatia.

Participants, who will be chosen among the highly motivated applilcants - young scientists working in crystallography and related fields, will be invited to present their own research via short (10 to 15 mins) talks or on posters. A small number of participants invited to the workshop (27) will give a chance to young crystallographers to share their ideas and experience among them, as well as to discuss their work and problems they encounter with the experienced senior scientists who will be attending the workshop as lecturers or tutors.

Crystallography today presents tremendous development and is opening new possibilities in scientific research and technological innovation. It is a very diverse field and fundamentally interdisciplinary. It concerns any method to study how that manifests the crystalline arrangement of condensed matter at the atomic level, from theoretical calculations electron density to atomic force microscopy.Â

The Mexican Society of Crystallography has proposed to offer in its seventh National Congress, a number of Plenary Lectures illustrating the above. In particular, we have prepared seven courses and four workshops that cover topics of interest such as X-ray scattering at low angle, electron density, nanostructures, nanodifracción, atomic force microscopy, crystal chemistry, solid-state chemistry of metal oxides including traditional courses Introduction to Crystallography Crystallography and crystals.

For this seventh edition of the Congress, has been chosen to host the city of Villahermosa, capital of Tabasco, whose temperature in May ranges from 30 to 35 degrees Celsius.

BCA Spring Meeting (7-10 April 2014, Loughborough University)

"Crystallography @ 100: Looking to the future, learning from the past"

The 2014 Spring Meeting will follow the successful format used in recent years with the traditional Young Crystallographers’ satellite meeting on Monday 7 April, followed by the main meeting starting at lunchtime on Tuesday 8 April with the final session finishing at lunchtime on Thursday 10 April.

Crystallography as a field of research has reached its centenary and 2014 has been designated by UNESCO as the International Year of Crystallography. The theme of the meeting is in tune with these milestones and will be "Crystallography @ 100: Looking to the future, learning from the past." The meeting logo incorporates an image of the X-ray diffraction pattern of NaCl reported by W. L. Bragg in the charmingly titled 1913 paper "The Structure of Some Crystals as Indicated by their Diffraction of X-rays" (Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A. 1913, 89, 248-277; doi:10.1098/rspa.1913.0083). We are grateful to the Royal Society for permission to include this image.

Strategic pipeline planning: from sample preparation to 3D structure determination with bio SAXS and other biophysical techniques

The location will be at the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF).
The course will provide training on creating a roadmap towards determining the 3D structure of a macromolecular target including troubleshooting and rational decision-making. Emphasis will be given on Bio SAXS as a method of choice to characterize the structure of a single protein and protein complexes in solution coupled with X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and electron microscopy (EM). An overview of mainstream methods will also be presented and attention will be drawn to techniques developed the last years like X-ray imaging. In addition, the participants will have a chance to get informed about the options they have for career development. Overall, the course will enable the attendees to adopt a broader way of thinking and get acquainted with state-of-the-art approaches currently employed in structural biology. This will increase researchers' awareness on the facilities and services provided and capitalize on the investment that has already been made by Europe with the aim to promote innovative research.
Target Group & Selection process: The course targets mainly PhD students and post-doctoral scientists who are currently working in the structural biology field and have already some experience in working with macromolecules. Experienced researchers will also be considered but priority will be given to younger scientists. A total of 25 participants will be accepted in the course. The applicants will be expected to send a CV (max. 2 pages), a motivation letter (max. 1 page) explaining why they wish to participate and what they expect from the course and a reference letter. The Biostruct-X and local organizers will be responsible for the selection process to ensure that equivalent criteria will be applied.

The workshop aims at covering both the theoretical and practical aspects of the refinement of crystalline structures of synthetic and natural materials by the Rietveld method, starting from powder X-ray diffraction patterns.Â
This workshop is designed for Master students, PhD students, academic and industrial researchers.

22nd Annual Meeting of the German Crystallographic Society

The scope of this 22nd DGK Annual Meeting is to show the diversity of crystallography as an interdisciplinary science. We are very glad that a number of renowed scientists, representing all different fields of crystallography, have accepted our invitation for a plenary lecture. It is our intention to offer researchers, feeling home within the interdisciplinary field of crystallography, an inspiring scientific platform.

The meeting will be preceded by a special IYCr2014 Symposium on 17 March.

The 12th Conference of the Asian Crystallographic Association

We cordially invite you to attend the 2013 Asian Crystallographic Association Meeting (AsCA'13), which will be held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong. The venue for the meeting has been moved from Dhaka, Bangladesh due to security concerns. The new dates for the meeting are 7-10 December 2013 (Sat - Tues). The meeting will cover diverse aspects of crystallographic research ranging from materials to life sciences and incorporating synchrotron and neutron studies. This meeting in 2013 is special since the International Union of Crystallography is celebrating the centenary of X-ray crystallography by the Braggs. The meeting is also a prelude to the upcoming International Year of Crystallography, IYCr2014.
