87th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Biochemical Society

Various methods for structural studies, such as X-ray crystallography (PX), X-ray small angle scattering (SAXS), cryoEM and molecular simulation, have been evolved very rapidly in the last decade. Combinations of these techniques reveal dynamic aspect of the molecular mechanism of biological macromolecular complexes based on the atomic structures. This symposium celebrates the International Year of Crystallography (IYCr) in 2014 and will highlight several recent results on structural studies on membrane proteins and huge protein complexes by X-ray crystallography together with recent advance of important techniques for structural life sciences.

The conference is a satellite meeting previous to "27th International Conference on Low Temperature Physics" (LT-27). AToMS will have two main goals. The first one is to promote the exchange of new ideas on recent topics of Magnetism and Superconductivity between internationally distinguished scientists as well as local researchers in the field. The second one is to dedicate part of the meeting to celebrate the academic and scientific career of Julián Sereni, Professor at Instituto Balseiro, and one international distinghished scientist in the study of Cerium-based strongly correlated electronic systems.

The 9th Liquid Matter Conference will take place at the University of Lisbon, Portugal, 21-25 July 2014. Previous conferences in this series were held in Lyon (1990), Firenze (1993), Norwich (1996), Granada (1999), Konstanz (2002), Utrecht (2005), Lund (2008), and Vienna (2011). The conference is organized jointly by the Liquids Section of the Condensed Matter Division of the European Physical Society, the University of Lisbon, and the School of Engineering of the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute (ISEL).
The conference will start on the morning of Monday 21 July 2014, and finish around lunchtime on Friday, 25 July 2014. The purpose of this conference is to bring together scientists working on the liquid state of matter and closely related topics, such as soft matter and biophysics. The rapidly growing field covered by this conference series therefore includes the physics, chemistry, biology, and chemical engineering of liquid matter as well as several areas of applied research.
The conference will consist of plenary lectures, topical symposia with keynote lectures and contributed oral presentations, as well as poster sessions. The highlights of the conference will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter.

BMTL â€" Bringing Maths to Life

Analysing and interpreting rich biological datasets require more expertise than just knowledge of the biological system at hand. Extracting reliable insights from complex bodies of data calls for suitable mathematical solutions. This workshop lets biologists and mathematicians join forces to address key areas in biology that face demanding mathematical challenges. Discussing existing cases to identify gaps or to share existing solutions should help these disciplines in successfully linking up. BMTL Workshop will be hosted in the ancient city of Naples, and will provide a timely and pertinent occasion for international researchers that wish to engage in cutting edge science at the interface of mathematics and biology.

Particulate Processes in the Pharmaceutical Industry IV

Over 80% of all pharmaceutical products are in the solid dosage form. Particulate processes therefore abound in the pharmaceutical industry. These include crystallization; high-shear granulation; fluidized bed drying, granulation, and coating; tablet compaction; fine powder transport, mixing, and blending. These and other particulate processes are used for the large-scale manufacture of tablets and capsules for public consumption. As such, efficient handling and processing of particulates is critical to meeting the stringent guidelines set by the FDA and profitable manufacture of pharmaceutical products. Failed batches can mean the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue needed to payback the tremendous up-front investment that is inherent in drug development. A recent US-FDA report on the pharmaceutical industry estimated that worldwide cost savings from manufacturing improvements could be as high as US$ 90 billion per year.
Particulate-based manufacturing processes need to be better understood so that they can be properly controlled and scaled up. The last decade has seen a shift from empirical formulation efforts to an engineering approach based on a better understanding of particulate behaviours in the process, facilitated by technological advances in computer modelling, manufacture and measurement techniques.

ECCB'14. 13th Conference on Computational Biology

ECCB'14 is the key European computational biology event in 2014 gathering scientists working at the intersection of a broad range of disciplines including computer science, mathematics, biology, and medicine. New challenges are emerging today in these fields with the recent advances in low-cost ultra-fast sequencing, bio-imaging and big-data approaches. Databases and software are evolving especially rapidly. Nonetheless, new algorithms are still required to improve computing with massive biological or biomedical data. Indeed, multi-scale integrative analyses are struggling to deal with the enormous complexity of biological systems modeling and the "data deluge" that results from next-generation sequencing technologies.
Participation at ECCB'14 will be the prime opportunity to keep pace with cutting-edge research in such exciting topics, and to network with other members of our community.Â

This year, Max F. Perutz, the Austrian Nobel Prize winner after whom our laboratories are named, would have turned 100. On this occasion, the Max F. Perutz Laboratories (MFPL) of the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna would like to invite you to the symposium "Crossing Frontiers in Life Sciences".Â
For the event, we have invited 14 highly renowned scientists, as well as 10 MFPL researchers to talk about structural biology, cell signaling, bioinformatics, RNA biology, and chromosome dynamics. Canadian Synchrotron Summer School (CS³) - Medical Imaging at CLS

The 2014 summer school will focus on providing theory and practical experience for researchers interested in improving their imaging capabilities. This school will provide background theory and practical experience from proposal writing to sample prep through data collection, reconstruction and visualization. Consistent with previous SES Conferences, we hope to bring together and promote dialogue between Synchrotron Science experts and Environmental Science experts. Building on the recent excitement of science that would be enabled by diffraction limited X-ray sources, as well as by Free Electron Laser (FEL) X-ray sources, the emphasis of the meeting will be identification of new opportunities in Environmental Science afforded by new or soon-to-be-available X-ray sources.Â
The conference will include presentations from synchrotron scientists who will explain the projected qualities of these new sources (X-ray spot and/or illumination size, coherence/spectral qualities, timing capabilities, etc.). It will also include presentations from scientists who have used synchrotron radiation sources in their research who will describe their work and their vision for how these new sources will benefit their research in the future. Program managers that fund enviromental science research will also be invited to give presentations and answer questions.
