Theory meets experiment: molecular nanoscience and applications

This three-day workshop will bring together experimentalists and theorists studying atomic and molecular scales structures on surfaces. The central theme of the workshop is the investigation of molecules on surfaces, and key topics are expected to include:
- Individual atoms and molecules â€" and structures engineered from these â€" on metals, semiconductors, insulators, and 2D materials
- Manipulation of the electronic and magnetic states of individual atoms and molecules through interactions with surfaces
- Molecular self assembly and molecular surface functionalization
- Molecule-based devices
- Novel imaging techniques (including tunnelling and force microscopies), spectroscopies and time resolved measurements.
One of the central objectives of the meeting is to promote cross-boundary discussions, especially at the experiment/theory and fundamental/applied interfaces. Time will be allocated to facilitate such discussions, including poster sessions and a social event.

55 Years of British Biophysics. A symposium celebrating the handover of the Society minutes to join the UK National Archive at the Weston Library

0th May 2015. Weston Library, Oxford University. The British Biophysical Society was founded in 1960 to promote interdisciplinary research accross the sciences. Nobel laureate John Kendrew helped found the BBS and this one day meeting will mark the archiving of the minutes of the society into the Kendrew archive by the Bodleian Library. This meeting will reflect on the early days of the society and make a link with cutting edge British Biophysics.

As part of the continuing activities of the IUCr Diffraction Data Deposition Working Group, this workshop will seek to define the necessary metadata that needs to be captured and deposited alongside experimental diffraction images in order that such raw data may be subsequently re-evaluated or re-used in more detailed scientific studies. The workshop will also explore the metadata requirements of other structural experimental techniques used by crystallographers.

DAWN: Automating and Simplifying Reduction of 2D powder diffraction data with DAWN. ECM29 satellite

Accurate calibration and reduction of two dimensional powder X-ray diffraction patterns is crucial to obtain high-quality data for subsequent analysis. The DAWN data analysis platform (www.dawnsci.org) has recently added two new tools to address these issues, which allow simple, rapid and accurate processing of large amounts of data. In this workshop, participants will first learn about the theoretical treatment of the raw data and then see how this is applied through tutorials using the new powder calibration tool within DAWN. They will then gain hands-on experience preparing and using data analysis pipelines to streamline data reduction of large and/or complicated data sets. We will demonstrate the use of these tools in the context of different and demanding experiment types, from in situ crystallisation through to extreme-conditions. As this workshop will provide a very hands-on introduction to the DAWN data analysis package, we recommend that participants bring their own laptops. DAWN can be freely downloaded in advance of the workshop from our website, but we will also be distributing the most up-to-date version of the software on the day. We welcome participants bringing their own data so that they can see how the DAWN package can be applied to their own work, but we would ask that they contact the organisers in advance.
DIALS workshop - Diffraction Integration for Advanced Light Sources

ECM29 Satellite meeting organised by Diamond Light Source & Croatian Association of Crystallographers
DIALS (Diffraction Integration for Advanced Light Sources) is a new integration package being developed as a collaboration between Diamond Light Source, CCP4 and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, with significant input from the MRC-LMB and funding from Biostruct-X workpackage 6. The aim of this workshop is to introduce new users to the package, with a view to using the software for X-ray diffraction data processing from macromolecular samples. Since the software is completely free and open source the workshop attendees will have the opportunity to bring their own laptop computers to have the software installed, and will need to do so to run the tutorials.

The course will be taught by a number of tutors with expertise covering all aspects of the field, including Wulf Blankenfeldt (Braunschweig), Liz Duke (Diamond), Katherine Mcauley (Diamond), Bill Hunter (Dundee), Kevin Cowtan (York), Jim Naismith (St Andrews), Tracey Gloster (St Andrews), and Garry Taylor (St Andrews).
The School is intended for first year postgraduates or postdocs new to crystallography. The week is very intensive, and gives a concentrated overview of the methods which many find useful.
As in the past, priority is given to UK applicants because of the funding arrangements, but is open to a limited number of overseas applicants.

First Science at the ABBIX Beamlines: Structural Biology at a New Frontier

The NSLS-II will be home to three state-of-the-art beamlines for macro-molecular crystallography and life science applications of x-ray scattering. The purpose of the First Science at the ABBIX Beamlines meeting is to explore and discuss scientific areas and opportunities on which early operation of the beamlines could capitalize.
These three beamlines comprise the ABBIX (Advanced Beamlines for Biological Investigations with X-rays) Project, sponsored by the NIH, and are currently under construction at NSLS-II:
- The Frontier Macromolecular Crystallography (FMX) Beamline is optimized to address microbeam applications.
- The Highly Automated Macromolecular Crystallography (AMX) Beamline is optimized for highly automated throughput.
- The High Brightness X-ray Scattering for Life Sciences (LIX) Beamline will offer multiple modes of study using X-ray scattering.

Construction will conclude by the end of 2015 and then commissioning will start. During the commissioning period, there will be opportunities to perform early experiments before the general user programs of the beamlines commence in 2016.

ESCG. European School on Crystal Growth

The aim of the ESCG School is to bring together PhD students and young researchers from all over Europe and the rest of the world in a warm and stimulating atmosphere to introduce them to the fundamental concepts and mechanisms governing crystal growth processes. Nowadays, many schools, tutorials and brief courses on specific aspects of the growth of advanced materials are being offered to the International Crystal Growth community; however, the importance of raising the new generation of crystal growers with an in-depth knowledge of the fundamental concepts at the basis of crystal growth science is never enough emphasized. To fill the gap, the ESCG School intends to address the fundamental aspects of the science and technology of crystal growth, with emphasis on the fundamental thermodynamics, fluid-dynamics, kinetics and atomistic mechanisms ruling crystal growth processes; these mechanisms will be presented along with principles of crystallization from the melt, liquid and vapour, for application to the synthesis of bulk, epitaxial, and nanosized crystals. The ambition of the School is to give the attendees a unitary view of the science and technology of crystal growth, despite the many and apparently diverse materials fields it nowadays applies. Selected senior experts in the field will give the lectures, answer your questions and are available for discussions.
ESCG is also the official AIC School 2015. It will take place in conjunction with the Fifth European Conference on Crystal Growth (ECCG5), which will be held also in Bologna in the days after the School. We cordially invite you to participate in this school and mark the dates in your agenda.
