New Insights into Crystal Growth Fundamentals: A tribute to Profs. Ichiro Sunagawa and Pieter Bennema

The symposium focuses on cutting-edge research in the fields of macromolecular crystallography, Cryo-EM, small angle scattering, electron diffraction, mass-spectroscopy, NMR, molecular dynamics and use of XFELs, and how these and other experimental approaches can be efficiently combined to resolve structure/function relationships in life science and medicine. The target group is academic researchers as well as researchers from large-scale facilities, health care and industry.

The program is centered around invited internationally leading keynote speakers and shorter invited talks as well as Clip-session presentations and round table discussions, and will be an excellent platform for national and international networking. *Both experienced specialists and researchers with more recently established interests in integrative structural biology are expected to greatly benefit from the symposium*.

The symposium is the biennial meeting of the neutron scattering community in Australia and New Zealand, and also welcomes the many international users of the Australian OPAL research reactor.

The goal of this meeting is to gather cryo-EM enthusiasts from around the globe to discuss topics including sample preparation, data collection, image processing and applications of cryo-EM. We will be hosting a range of speakers that will share their recent progress and developments. Application deadline is Friday, August 31. The course is intended mainly for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in the area of structural biology. In some cases, assistant -professor-level applicants can be accepted as well. The school is not meant as an introductory level course to protein crystallography. It is designed more for applicants with reasonable expertise in crystallography and experience with the CCP4 suite. The purpose of the school is to address specific problems that the applicants face while processing diffraction data and while solving and refining novel structures. Applicants with already collected data will be given strong consideration, although this not a mandatory requirement.

Note: for the tutorials and practicals there is a limit of 35 students, lectures are open to all.

Application to the workshop is free of charge, but a letter from the supervisor or the professor will be required.Travel expenses will be the responsibility of the participant, accommodation and meals will be provided. There accommodation at the CSIR guest house.

This meeting aims to bring together scientists from a wide range of fields who utilise analytical technoques which require X-rays, including diffraction, scattering, tomography, imaging, reflectometry, X-ray fluorescence and X-ray spectroscopy. Researchers in these fields are encouraged to attend and share their work with the community and discuss the future of the study of matter using X-rays. Suppliers of scientific instrumentation will be exhibiting and demonstrating their equipment at the event.

The primary language of this meeting will be French.
