11th International Symposium on the Characterization of Porous Solids (COPS-XI)

COPS-XI is the latest of a series of symposia, held every 3 years, devoted to fundamental and applied research on the characterization of the structure of porous materials and the relationship between structure and material performance.
The scope includes
- experimental characterization methods, such as X-ray diffraction, NMR, adsorption, mercury intrusion, calorimetry ...
- theoretical and simulation methods used to interpret experimental data, such as molecular simulation, classical and statistical mechanical theory, pore network modeling ...
- applied research, on the impact of measured material properties on performance in applications
The aim of this series of symposia is to bring together experts from academia and industry in order to share the latest developments in the characterization of porous solids using the various experimental and/or computational methods, together with the understanding of the relationships between the measured material properties and the final performance for a given application.
This conference will be held at the Popes Palace in Avignon and will be chaired by Philip Llewellyn (CNRS-Marseille)

Basics and Application of Rietveld
Organised by R.E. Dinnebier in cooperation with the Universities of Tübingen and Stuttgart and the Powder Diffraction Working Group of the DGK.Course Description
The aim of the intensive course is to teach the basics of the Rietveld method in theory and practice. Specifically, the following topics: • Fundamentals of Powder Diffraction • Whole Powder Pattern Fitting (WPPF) Fundamental parameters, complex reflection profiles • Creation of instrument profiles for powder diffractometer • Correction factors: LP-factor, absorption, microabsorption, extinction, preferred orientation • Methods for the development of a starting model for the crystal structure • Application of Penalty Functions, Constraints, Restraints, etc. • Preparation of Rigid Bodies (flexible polyhedron molecules, such matrices) • Structure strategies, global optimization methods in direct space, charge flipping • Use of the difference Fourier method in combination with Rietveld refinements • Refinement of microstructural parameters using the Rietveld refinement • Quantitative phase analysis using the Rietveld method • Comparison of different methods for determining the amorphous portion • Alternative structural descriptions by symmetry and rotational modes • parameterization of Rietveld refinements (macro programming) • Global Optimization stack disordered crystal structures • Global and local optimization of the pair distribution function • Creation of Rietveld plots for publicationsCourse fee: 60 euros for students / PhD students / post-docs (including dinner). Student DMG members get a subsidy of 50 euros from DMG. (Course fees for industry participants 400 Euro, if seats are free).
Language: Lectures in English. Exercises in English and German
Exercises: For the exercises a laptop (Windows 64-bit) with administrator privileges. TOPAS 5/6 will need to be installed prior to school.

REXS2016. Resonant Elastic X-ray Scattering

REXS2016 conference on resonant elastic x-ray scattering is the 3rd in a row after the very successful events in Aussois 2011 and the subsequent conference in Oxford 2013.
The REXS conference series re-started again almost 20 years after the conference on Resonant Anomalous X-ray Scattering 1992 in Malente and the first conference on Resonant X-ray Scattering 1974 in Madrid. The conference is aimed at stimulating interaction and discussion of scientists working in the field of hard condensed matter research with synchrotron radiation and using spectroscopy and scattering methods, that base upon resonance effects occurring close to the X-ray absorption edges.
Anomalous or resonant elastic X-ray scattering takes advantage of resonance enhancement of the scattered signal at the X-ray absorption edges and associated polarization effects. Experiments in this area range from conventional anomalous scattering and resonant magnetic diffraction to the investigation of exotic multipolar order or nuclear resonant diffraction. In addition, at REXS2016 we would like to emphasize the intrinsic ties and complementarity between scattering and spectroscopic methods (XMCD) for the investigation of properties of hard condensed matter materials and would like to bridge the gap between the two communities both in the soft and hard X-ray regime.The conference will cover the following topics:- Basic concepts/theory

NCS2016 is held under the auspices of BCS and is the major event on Crystallography, crystal growth, structure analyses and related techniques in Bulgaria.
