The MLZ Conference 2020 intends to bring together experts in the field of life sciences regardless of whether they have used neutron scattering techniques or not. The conference will try to cover all relevant fields of life science and will discuss  on how to improve neutron instrumentation, access to neutron beam time, sample environments and support labs for future life sciences users.
Powder Diffraction and Rietveld Refinement School 2020

As in previous years, we will offer a combination of lectures covering the theoretical aspects of powder diffraction and Rietveld refinement, classroom-based "by-hand" problem sessions/tutorials and extensive hands-on practical sessions using a variety of modern software packages.

Topology in Magnetism: Theory Meets Experiment 2019

Advanced Diffraction Techniques for Biology (ADTB)

The course will cover X-rays, neutrons and electrons diffraction by crystals of biological
macromolecules. Various techniques will be investigated:
• Macromolecular crystal growth
• In situ (in plate) X-ray diffraction
• Serial X-ray crystallography
• Time-resolved X-ray crystallography
• Neutron diffraction
• Electron diffraction of nano-crystals
with the aim of solving de novo structures, searching ligands, elucidating reaction
mechanisms...
This 4-day course will combine theoretical lectures and practicals on the EPN instruments.
It is dedicated to researchers (advanced PhD, PostDoc, Scientist) interested in
macromolecular structural studies at atomic resolution using crystallographic approaches.
The course will take place from November 19 to November 22, 2019 at the EPN campus,
Grenoble, France. To apply, please, send a short CV (1 page max.) and a motivation letter
to marta.elzo-aizarna@ibs.fr before September 30, 2019.
The registration is free and includes accommodation and meals on the EPN campus.
Selected applicants will be notified by e-mail by October 15, 2019. Participants will have to

3rd US School on Total Scattering Analysis

The school will focus on introducing total scattering data and modelling methods and demonstrating their use in understanding complex functional materials. Recent developments and future directions of the technique will also be discussed.
The school is limited to 40 participants. Preference will be given to active and future users of the Spallation Neutron Source.Â

EMBO global exchange lecture course *Structural and biophysical methods for biological macromolecules in solution*

structural and biophysical techniques employed for characterization of
proteins and nucleic acids under close to native conditions. It includes
lectures on: small angle X-ray and neutron scattering, NMR, mass
spectrometry, analytical ultracentrifugation, bioinformatic tools,
cryoEM and interdisciplinary approaches. The registration fee of 170
euro will be requested from the academic participants covering the event
materials, lodging and meals. A limited number of travel grants and
child care grants are available.

Workshop on Perspectives and Applications of Deep Learning for Accelerated Scientific Discovery at Next Generation X-ray and Neutron Sources

Breakthroughs in deep learning (DL) technology are revolutionising the amount, rate and nature of information that can be extracted from data, creating new opportunities to accelerate scientific discovery in ways that have never been imagined before.
The scientific information generated at large scale facilities, such as Synchrotrons, Free Electron Lasers and neutron sources, presents a novel and challenging platform to explore the boundaries of DL technology. Here both the volume of high quality scientific data as well as the high speed of experiments, specifically those that monitor and track fast real-time physical processes, place high demands on both state of the art instruments and software as well as in experimenters themselves. DL can potentially enhance the scientific value and insight that can be gained from experiments in these large-scale scientific infrastructures.
In this workshop we shall focus on two topical themes on DL Accelerated Discovery:
- The use of DL architectures to generate unbiased and objective models for analysis of scattering data from X-ray and neutron sources.
- The use of DL methods for optimising data collection protocols in real time and for discovering anomalies in experimental data and enhancing the efficiency of the scientific workflow.
These intersections of scientific discovery and DL science are unique and the workshop will explore potential research avenues to understand how to best develop these technologies to accelerate discovery using these facilities.
The program for the workshop will consist of plenary sessions followed by working groups, and final close-out.Â
On Thursday the 26th, plenary seminars will review the state of the art in DL and how it is currently used in X-ray and neutron scattering experiments, as well as on the challenges that these experimental techniques face that can be addressed by DL. Afternoon working groups, led by a convener, will explore and report in how DL methods can become more generically applicable to a wide range of scattering experiments, including data analysis, bias-free modelling and optimization of experimental protocols.
On Friday, 27th, conveners will present the outcomes of the previous day’s working-groups and the meeting will close with a discussion and presentation of an overall summary. A tentative roadmap on how to make progress in the application of DL for Accelerated Scientific Discovery at next generation X-ray and Neutron Sources will also be proposed.
There is no registration fee for the workshop, but attendance is limited to 20 participants. Further announcements regarding the program and speakers will be made available shortly.
3rd Nordic-Baltic School in Neutron Scattering

The Nordic Neutron Science Program (NNSP) and SwedNess are proud to announce the 3rd Nordic-Baltic School in Neutron Scattering. The event will take place this year in the Estonian university town of Tartu, 9th-20th September 2019. The school is primarly for PhD students early in the their studies, but M.Sc. students can apply as well.
On 7th and 8th September, the school will be preceded with a crash course on the necessary Mathematics (complex numbers, Fourier transforms etc.) and Physics for students from non-Physics backgrounds.Â
The cost for participation, accommodation and travel is free for students from Nordic countries. The school is funded by Nordforsk and the Swedish Strategic Research Council (SSF).Â

2019 ILL Annual School on Neutron Diffraction Data Treatment

The school aims to contribute to the training of scientists in treatment of X-ray and neutron diffraction data. The school is based on intensive hands-on sessions using the computer programs of the FullProf Suite.
The lectures and tutorials will provide the essential tools necessary for an efficient use of the FullProf Suite at an intermediate level.
PhD students and experienced scientists with a basic knowledge of diffraction techniques and crystallography are encouraged to apply.

EMBO Practical Course: Small Angle Neutron and X-ray Scattering from Biomacromolecules in Solution

In Grenoble
This EMBO Practical Course will focus on the use of small angle scattering of both neutrons and X-rays for the determination of the structures of biological macromolecules. Particular attention will be paid towards sample preparation and the analysis and interpretation of small angle scattering data in a biological context.
The course will consist of lectures, tutorials and practicals, taking advantage of the location of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility and the Institut Laue Langevin on the same scientific campus in Grenoble.Â
