Precise crystallography has significantly contributed to the success and recent developments in materials science, solid state physics and chemistry. Among the available programs for diffraction data analysis, the FULLPROF SUITE is one of the most widely used packages by the scientific community working in these fields. Â
By creating a regular school on the FULLPROF SUITE, our aim is to contribute directly to the training of the upcoming generation of scientists. These intensive, hands-on, schools are focus on the analysis of diffraction data with the FULLPROF SUITE.Â
After two successful issues, 2008 on "heterogeneous data coming from powders, single crystals, X-rays and time-of-flight neutron diffraction" and 2009 on "Magnetism", the third school, FPSchool 2010, took place in Grenoble from 2 to 7 May. It continued with the tradition of dedicating the first part to generalities and the second part of the school to a more specialized topic: complete diffraction-data treatment under constraints (powders and single crystals) using a symmetry mode approach for extended ionic/covalent materials and rigid body constraints for molecular materials.Lectures
The school lasted 5 days: three days dedicated to general applications plus two days dedicated to the specialised topic that will change each year. This year the school was mainly devoted to under constraint refinements.Theoretical introductory lectures (max. 1 hour/lecture) were followed by hands-on practical computing sessions. The afternoon was mostly dedicated to practical sessions.

SCOPE
Synchrotron and neutron sources offer recent and additional insight into the records of our cultural past. Over the last years, there has been an increasing demand for access to SR- and neutron-based techniques, and their applications in the fields of archaeological science and cultural heritage. The purpose of this Hercules Specialized Course is to give the participants an introduction to the basic principles of SR and neutron techniques (imaging, microscopy, diffraction, absorption and fluorescence, IR spectroscopy). The school will also provide cross-disciplinary examples illustrating the abilities of these techniques in a representative range of scientific cases in relation with the European cultural heritage. The lectures will cover both theoretical and experimental aspects to the attention of a non-expert audience. They will be complemented by tutorials (diffraction and XAS data processing), and practicals on a selection of artefacts taking place at several ESRF and ILL beamlines. Young scientists and newcomers at the interfaces of the disciplines of archaeology, archaeological science, art conservation and materials science are welcome.ORGANISERS

Over the first 2 days, the HSC includes introductory talks on core SR and neutron methods (diffraction, XAS) and will also cover recent and dedicated developments in IR spectroscopy, full-field 2/3D imaging, micro-beams and microscopy, together with related tutorials.Complementarity lecturesÂ
The last day covers a variety of archaeological and cultural heritage issues, e.g. studies of pigments, metal ware, manuscripts and parchments, tissues, ceramics and glasses.PracticalsÂ
2 days of beamtime are planned for training and practising at the ESRF and ILL. The participants are encouraged to discuss with us the possibility to bring over their own samples as test cases and for preliminary measurements.

SCOPE
The conference will be discussing and covering various topics in the field of materials science and engineering, metallurgy, solid state chemistry and physics, polymers, soft condensed matter, biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, medical science, as well as pharmacy in association with neutron and X-ray scattering techniques. It also widely covers other topics such as instrument development and computer modeling or simulation in crystal and macromolecule structures for scientific and industrial applications.
ICANS XXI. 21st Meeting of the International Collaboration on Advanced Neutron Sources

ICANS (International Collaboration on Advanced Neutron Sources) is a network for scientists who are involved in developing pulsed neutron sources and accelerator based spallation neutron sources.
Since 1st ICANS meetings was held in 1977 at Argonne National Laboratory in the day of dawn of spallation neutron technique, ICANS has been continuously held already 20 times somewhere in the world. Now we are extremely happy to announce that the next ICANS, the 21st meeting, will be held at Mito hosted by J-PARC this autumn.
The meeting has a two layered structure, one is plenary session and another is workshop. Two of them are complementary and tightly cooperate each other. In the meeting we would like to enhance "workshop style", which is an original and traditional way of ICANS. Actually 2/3 of topics will be discussed in the workshop sessions. It also will be essentially organized/lead by the workshop chairs. Plenary session shows overall issues in a relevant workshop, whose details should be talked/discussed in the workshop

- Neutron scattering encompasses a set of unique and powerful set of tools for the study of molecules and materials. They are crucial to the development of fields as diverse as energy storage, structural biology, materials engineering, magnetism and electronics.
- The Asia-Oceania region is a world leader in neutron scattering. Among its many facilities, our region boasts the world's newest and most powerful spallation neutron source (J-PARC in Japan) and its newest major reactor neutron source (OPAL in Australia), with the next generation nearing completion (CSNS and CARR in China).
- These neutron scattering facilities are the biggest and most expensive pieces of research infrastructure in most of the countries that operate them.
- The quadrennial AOCNS meeting is the flagship neutron scattering meeting in our region, on an equal footing with the ACNS (American Conference on Neutron Scattering) and ECNS (European Conference Neutron Scattering).

About the practical course
The EMBO Practical Course is aimed at young scientists working in the field of structural biology including: biochemists, biophysicists, and those specializing in macromolecular crystallography (MX), electron microscopy (EM), NMR or bioinformatics. Small angle scattering (SAS) of X-rays and neutrons (SAXS/SANS) experiences a renaissance in structural biology allowing one to study native particles and complexes and to monitor structural changes in response to variations in external conditions (temperature, pH, salinity, ligands).Novel data analysis methods and a broader accessibility to high brilliance instruments on large scale facilities significantly enhanced resolution and reliability of structural models provided by SAS. Emerging automation of the experiment, data processing and interpretation made solution SAS a streamline tool for large scale structural studies in molecular biology. The method provides low resolution macromolecular shapes ab initio and is readily combined with other structural, biochemical and computational techniques in hybrid approaches. The extremely broad range of molecular sizes accessible by SAS, from kDa to GDa, allows one to monitor the interactions in hierarchical systems at different levels of structural organization. The participants are encouraged to bring their own samples for biophysical characterization (e.g. using light scattering, size exclusion chromatography and thermoflour experiments). They may also bring the SAXS or SANS data collected on other facilities to be analysed during the Course.

The neutron community is looking forward for the start of the construction of the ESS: it was demonstrated that the flux at the ESS instruments will exceed the flux of corresponding instruments at continuous sources by more than an order of magnitude.
However, this outstanding perspective does not diminish the value of the existing continuous neutron sources. The double-digit gain in intensity at the ESS will not directly result in the same gain in the experimental time, but will be used for flagship experiments aiming weaker effects at smaller samples, so that the time per experiment will be like at present. Therefore, the existing network of neutron sources will further be of an indispensible value allowing for a large number of standard for today experiments and thus supporting and keeping the largeneutron user community that is vitally important for the successful scientific life of the ESS as well.
Indeed, the ESS at the horizon should be a trigger to intensify today's instrumentation upgrade. Three years of enormous intellectual efforts of the world neutron community, both users and instrument scientists aiming the definition of new instrumental challenges via science cases and developments of the instrumental concepts resulted in newideas and approaches, which cover the whole neutron tract (target, cold sources, neutron delivery systems, instrument components and instruments themselves). This stockpile of knowledge can be fruitfully used for the improvement of the existing instrumentation.
The JCNS 2014 Workshop will be devoted to this issue and bring together neutron scientists working both at spallation and continuous neutron sources to consider the latest instrumental developments for spallation sources through the prism of their use for instrumentation at continuous sources. Challenges met during the construction of the last generation of neutron instruments at continuous sources will be discussed as well.
WCNR-10. 10th World Conference on Neutron Radiography

The 10th World Conference on Neutron Radiography (WCNR-10) will attract scientist active in the field of neutron imaging either as designers and/or operators of facilities or as users of such installations. During the conference the latest methodical developments, instrumentation layout and improvements and new applications will be presented and discussed.
WCNR-10 continues a series of meetings that was initiated and started in San Diego (USA) in 1986. In intervals of about four years the conference moved between USA, Japan and Europe until the most recent one (WCNR-9) that took place in South Africa in 2010. See the proceedings of WCNR-9
Given by the progress of the detector development the method of neutron imaging has become much more efficient than in the past and new techniques (tomography, real-time imaging, etc.) have become common tools for different research applications. A world-wide active community of both method and application oriented members has grown within the network organized within ISNR. Many powerful neutron imaging beam lines now operate as user facilities and the systems are shared among very different research teams. The access to neutron imaging at user facilites has also resulted in a growing user community that benefit from the latest developments at the instuments.

The Learning Days organized by the Italian Society of Neutron Spectroscopy are addressed to degree and specializing students, PhD students, post-doc and young researchers interested in acquiring the basic principles of neutron spectroscopy, in understanding the advantages and potentialities of this technique, and in exploiting it for their research.
The eighth edition of the SISN Learning Days will take place from 13 to 22 September 2014, with subject "Introduction to neutron techniques for condensed matter studies, with applications to Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Earth sciences".
Two sessions
The Learning Days are characterized by two sessions. The first session provides the students with the fundamentals of neutron spectroscopy and the basic principles of data analysis. The lectures on the basic theoretical and experimental tools will be paralleled by tutorials about data analysis. During the second experimental session the students will carry out real neutron scattering measurements at the most important facility for neutron research: the high flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France.
The first part of the school, from 13 to 17 September will be held at Hotel Steinpent in S. Giovanni Valle Aurina (in the province of Bolzano, Italy). With favourable weather conditions, a pause day is foreseen (on Monday 15 September) during which students can take part to an excursion in the mountains organized by the school. Monday evening will instead be devoted to the presentation of the experiments foreseen in Grenoble. On Thursday 18 September students will leave S. Giovanni to reach Grenoble in the evening. The school organizes the travel to Grenoble.
The second session will take place from 19 to 22 September, with two full days of measurements. At the end of the experiments the students will present a short report, in the form of a seminar, certifying their activity during the school. A committee composed by the school directors and experimental tutors will assign a prize for the best presentation.

18th JCNS Laboratory Course - Neutron Scattering 2014

The Jülich Centre for Neutron Science of Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany, organises in cooperation with the University of Münster (Prof. D. Richter, Dr. R. Zorn) and the RWTH Aachen University (Prof. T. Brückel, Prof. G. Heger, Prof. G. Roth) a laboratory course in neutron scattering with experiments at the neutron scattering facilities of the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum MLZ.
The course consists of two parts: a series of lectures, combined with the opportunity to take part in neutron scattering experiments. The lectures encompass an introduction to neutron sources, along with scattering theory and instrumentation. Furthermore, selected topics of condensed matter research are be presented.
Lectures are held at Forschungszentrum Jülich and the experiments take place at the neutron facilities of the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum in Garching near Munich.
The laboratory course is part of the curriculum of the University of Münster and the RWTH Aachen.
The aim of the course to give a realistic insight into the experimental technique of neutron scattering and its scientific potential. Forschungszentrum Jülich supports students from out of the area with free accommodation and half-board. Travel stipendia for foreign students are also available.

Institut Montana, Zug, Switzerland  The PSI summer school 2014 is dedicated to the topic: Exploring time, energy and length scales in condensed matter. International experts and PSI staff members will introduce and deepen your knowledge of these scientific topics. Additionally, you will learn about the experimental methods applied at the large-scale facilities of PSI in order to understand the phenomena, presently at the forefront of modern solid state physics and chemistry.Synchrotron radiation, neutron, and muon sources are used to investigate the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of condensed matter. Using these facilities, the focus of the school is the study of dynamic processes in nature and technology, over the full range of time and length scales at which they actually occur. The principles of the underlying experimental methods will be explained. Evening lectures will address the importance of time, energy and length scales in other scientific fields.  Following the school a practical training at PSI is offered to a limited number of participants. The training allows a hands-on experience at the beamlines of the facilities.

About the Workshop
The behavior of bulk fluids changes dramatically when they are confined in small pores or at interfaces, due to increasing importance of the boundary conditions and molecule-surface interactions. Macroscopic experimental methods provide information on the properties of confined fluids averaged over the whole sample volume and thus deliver little information on how pores of different sizes contribute to the changes in the structure and mobility under confinement. On the contrary, neutron and X-ray scattering, spectroscopy methods as well as computer modeling techniques allow the investigator to "look inside pores" and monitor changes in the fluid behaviour as a function of pore sizes. Despite significant progress achieved recently in our understanding of the influence of confinement, there are still a number of important issues, resolving which is highly important from both fundamental and practical perspective as porous materials are widely used in a variety of biomedical, energy- and environment- related applications.The goal of this workshop is to foster collaboration among instrument scientists, users with experience or interest in studying confined fluids using neutron and X-ray scattering techniques, and experts in computer modeling, by sharing recent scientific breakthroughs, research interests, and current needs in the field. Strong emphasis will be placed on exploring new scientific areas, promoting dialogue between experimentalists and theoreticians, and defining synergistic development strategies. Sessions topics, all with an emphasis on the scattering, spectroscopy and computer modeling, will include: relevant scientific areas in biology, materials sciences, chemistry and geology, as well as sample environment design. The list of invited speakers includes national and international experts in the physics of confined fluids, both from academia and national laboratories, as well as researchers that consider access the state-of-the-art scattering instrumentation and computing resources as a significant component in their research.

The twentieth annual Center for High Resolution Neutron Scattering (CHRNS) "Summer School on Methods and Applications of Small Angle Neutorn Scattering and Neutron Reflectometry " will be held from Monday, July 14 to Friday, July 18, 2014 at the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR). This year's summer school is devoted to methods and applications of small angle neutron scattering and neutron reflectometry. Neutron spectroscopy will not be covered.
The course is targeted at those with little or no previous experience with elastic neutron scattering methods. The combination of introductory lectures and training in scattering techniques will provide participants with a unique opportunity to become familiar with neutron scattering methods and their application to current research topics.
Attendance for the summer school is limited to 35 students and to people affiliated with US universities and US industry.
The Summer School is sponsored by the NCNR and by the National Science Foundation under the Center for High Resolution Neutron Scattering (CHRNS) cooperative agreement DMR-0944772. Support for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty may be requested on the summer school application form.
Six instruments will be featured in this years summer school, 3 SANS instruments and 3 NR instruments. The SANS instruments featured will be NG3 30 meter SANS, NG7 30 meter SANS and BT5 USANS. The NR instruments featured will be the NGD Off-Specular Reflectometer(MAGIK), NGD Polarized Beam Reflectometer/Diffractometer (PBR) and NG7 Horizontal Sample NR.

After the two first Neutrons and Food conferences in Sydney (2010) and in Delft (2012), “Neutrons and Food 3†will be held inside Paris at "La Maison du Lait" from Wednesday 9th to Friday 11th of July 2014, and is co-organized by AgroSup Dijon and Laboratoire Léon Brillouin.
