A workshop dedicated to the centenary of the publication of P. Debye’s paper on «Zerstreuung von Röntgenstrahlen» (Feb. 25th, 1915), which first provided an expression for the diffraction from a randomly oriented powder of scatterers.Â

Over the past twenty years, the rising interest in nanomaterials, and the ever growing power and availability of computers has revived interest in the Debye Scattering Equation (DSE), which is now a paradigm in the analysis of the matter at the nanoscale. Besides and beyond the DSE, stemming from the same root, Total Scattering methods have grown steadily, gaining increasingly popularity with the Pair Distribution Function (PDF) approach. The common root is in the description of scattering based on atomic distances in clusters of atoms/molecules and nanoparticles, as an alternative to the concept of unit cell and translational symmetry of the traditional crystallography for ideal bulk crystals.

This workshop is dedicated to DSE history, methodology, new ideas and representative applications, with further interest in PDF and Total Scattering methods to study matter at the atomic scale independently of its degree of order, be it amorphous, nanocrystalline or simply a disordered crystal.

As a focused and intensive workshop DSE2015 is limited to 50 participants. Besides a restricted number of invited speakers, admission to the workshop is conditioned by the acceptance of an abstract; as an alternative to an abstract, a motivation letter can also be presented. Admission is decided (no appeal) by the Scientific Committee (Billinge-Cervellino-Neder-Scardi). Title and abstract submitted at this stage can then be modified if/when necessary before the workshop.

The program, distributed over four days, provides for a single session with extended time for discussion after keynote and contributed talks. A half-day session is dedicated to Poster presentations.

The choice of a limited and selected participation and the location in a comfortable resort nearby a small town of the Dolomitic mountain area of Italy, are intended to promote free discussions and to foster the beginning of collaborations and projects.

Written contributions of accepted talks/posters will be considered for publication â€" after the workshop â€" in special issues of peer-reviewed (ISI-Scopus) Journals. More details to be provided soon.

Functional materials, smart materials, intelligent materials â€" whatever your chosen terminology - will be a key pillar of 21^st century technology. In recent years, nanostructured materials and nano-composites have become increasingly important because of their remarkable properties and growing areas or practical application. Various aspects of the mechanical properties of nano-materials, plus analytical and computational modelling in combination with comprehensive experimental analysis of mechanical behavior, are yet to be fully explored. In spite of the rapid progress in this field, the mechanical properties of nano-materials and composites remain terra incognita in materials science. In the field of massive and complex manufacturing we are now in need of materials, with properties, that can be manipulated according to our needs.

This conference aims to comprise a cross disciplinary summit that transcends departmental, institutional, industrial, public and private research organizations and global barriers and lends itself to the integration of research and education in the vital field of advanced materials. The conference will focus on the sectors of advanced processing, material characterization, modeling and simulation, properties, performance and device fabrication.

As a part of the commemoration of the International Year of Crystallography, the Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CNSNT), Sathyabama University, is conducting this workshop.

The workshop entitled “Molecular materials: from fundamentals to applications” will focus on various aspects of research into molecular materials ranging from fundamentals to applications. The following topics will be covered:

1. Polymorphism in Molecular Materials â€" control, prediction, and implications for applications.
2. Crystallisation of molecular materials under ambient and non-ambient conditions
3. In situ studies of molecular crystals and molecular materials â€" diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy, lattice dynamics
4. Solid-state chemical reactions of molecular materials - mechanochemistry

In 2013 the British Council has launched a new five-year programme to encourage international research collaboration between ambitious young researchers from the UK and nineteen countries around the world. In 2014 the British Council in Russia is partnering with the Royal Society of Chemistry to organise and deliver a chemistry-themed jointly funded Researcher Links workshop which will provide opportunities for 40 early career researchers from the UK and Russia to interact, learn from each other and explore opportunities for building long-lasting research collaborations.

The workshop will provide a unique opportunity for sharing research expertise and networking. During the workshops early career researchers will present their research in the form of a short oral (or poster) presentation and discuss this with established researchers from the UK and Russia. There will be a focus on building up links for future collaborations and participants will be selected on the basis of their research potential and ability to build longer term links.

The British Council and the Royal Society of Chemistry will jointly cover the costs related to participation in the workshop of UK and Russian researchers, including:

• UK researchers: travel (both international and local), accommodation, Russian business visas;
• Russian researchers: travel and accommodation.

Miscellaneous event costs will also be covered (including at least 2 meals per day).

The 11th LANSCE School on Neutron Scattering: Materials at the Mesoscale, will focus on the influence of surfaces, interfaces, meso- and micro-structure on the functionality of materials. The nine day school will provide an overview and training, through hands-on exercises, of concepts, instrumentation, measuring techniques and data analysis in neutron scattering. Techniques such as: neutron diffraction, small angle neutron scattering, local structure determination, neutron reflectometry together with scanning electron microscopy will be covered.

The bi-annual conference series 'Microscopy of Semiconducting Materials' has a long tradition in focusing on the most recent advances in the study of the structural and electronic properties of semiconducting materials by the application of transmission and scanning electron microscopy.
