In Florence
 An ancient tradition links the study of crystallography to this city, which during the sixteenth century saw the Medici family attracting on the banks of the Arno river Nicolas Steno, who stated the first law of crystallography. In the same period the Medici started to collect some crystalline specimens, first nucleus of one of the most precious and ancient collections of natural crystals.
The program selected by the Scientific and Organizing committees is thought to support the participation and contacts between members of the two groups involved, enabling the exchange of ideas in scientific fields (such as crystal growth, methods and techniques for structure determination, molecular recognition, polymer and material science, molecular medicine and structural biology), different and sometimes seemingly distant, but all associated with crystallography.
Thus, a hundred years after the international awards for the fundamental importance of studing matter by means of crystals, we are confident that Florence, the cradle of Renaissance ideas, will be the venue in which scientists from different fields will innovate and find stimuli for growth and collaboration.

International Symposium on Nanostructured Functional Materials (NanoFunMat2014)

NanoFunMat2014 is organized by the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, one of the leading scientific institutions in Central and Eastern Europe. IPC-PAS has a long tradition of organizing high-end meetings gathering some of the leading chemists, physicists and materials scientists from around the world. Perhaps one of the most illustrative examples here is the International Symposium on Supramolecular Chemistry (ISSC), which has been held annually since the early 1980s and by now developed into a prestigious International Symposium in Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry (for more information, please see ISMSC-8). Last year, we also initiated a symposium devoted to Mechanochemistry in Synthesis and Nanoscience (ISMech2013), which turned out to be an unusual success. NanoFunMat is our next venue and we have high hopes for its success and lasting impact.
The Symposium will cover a broad range of nanomaterials and their applications in electronics, optics, medicine, and more. We hope the meeting will provide a great opportunity to exchange knowledge and ideas with the top-level scientists from the EU and beyond.

The aim of the symposium is to provide an opportunity to extend current knowledge, promote progress, and open up new vistas in the field.
Since 1948 a group of distinguished scientists from all over the world and from a wide range of fields gathered at the International Symposium on the Reactivity of Solids to discuss recent results and future experimental developments in the fields of the reactivity of solids. A characteristic feature of this symposium is that it is not a function of a particular society but is arranged by a local organizing committee, with input from many past attendees, and lives on the enthusiasm and on the scientific curiosity of a world-wide community. The chemistry-based bottom-up nanoscience techniques evolved from colloid chemistry, a key topic in physical chemistry since the late 19th century. The major difference to classic colloid chemistry is the molecular control with which synthetic nanomaterials can be built up and investigated. This will be discussed in sessions dealing with the tailor-made synthesis of high quality nanostructured materials, the investigation of nucleation and the growth and assembly of nano-objects into complex hybride structures with advanced functionality. A strong boost in nanoscience came from the development of structural and chemical analysis techniques with atomic resolution and from the possibility to perform spectroscopic investigations and transport measurements on single nano-objects. Therefore, special sessions are devoted to topics such as the structural and electronic characterization, spectroscopy on the nanoscale, and the investigation of transport properties. Strongly correlated to these topics is the development of theoretical methods for the descriptions of such large systems with high accuracy. Furthermore, the application of nanoparticles in the life sciences, including the biological response to nanoparticles, the visualization of biological processes using specifically functionalized nanoparticles in combination with modern molecular imaging techniques will be part of the scientific program. Besides fascinating basic science, the conference will cover aspects of applications that arose in nanotechnology including high-tech materials with improved mechanical properties, novel materials for lightning, display technologies, catalysis, energy conversion and storage, as well as contrast agents and drug delivery systems for diagnosis and therapy.
Overall, nanoscience is a true transdiciplinary topic covering physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and engineering. Since physical chemistry plays a central role in all these areas, the Bunsentagung 2014 will highlight these aspects as the main topic. Internationally outstanding scientists will give the opening and plenary lectures and progress reports on the various aspects of nanoscience and technology. Almost all of these topics will intentionally overlap with the more generic topical areas of the Bunsentagung 2014 to foster interdisciplinary discussions and collaborations on a leading edge level of expertise.

The EMAS Regional Workshops are biennial events designed to provide postgraduate-level and research workers in materials science, material engineering and related subjects, with basic knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The workshops are organised as low budget meetings with lectures on practical and theoretical aspects of EPMA given by internationally recognised experts. The International Workshop on Bulk Nitride Semiconductor (IWBNS) is designed to implement and increase information exchange and collaboration among academic, industrial, and government scientists on challenges of growing high quality Group III nitride crystals with low concentration of structural defects and controlled conductivity type.Â
This workshop has been previously held in Brazil (2000, 2002, 2007), Poland (2004, 2009), and Japan (2006, 2011). For the first time, worldwide expert on bulk nitride related science and technology will meet in GermanyThe IWBNS-VIII will focus on the most recent advances and potential approaches to solve remaining challenges on group-III nitride crystals growth and conductivity type control, surface preparation, fast growth and deposition rates, polarity control, device grade homoepitaxial films, doping, characterization, optical and electronic properties, device fabrication and characterization, modeling and theory.Â

Crystal structure is one of principal factors determining the material properties. X-ray, neutron and electron diffraction methods of crystal and defect structure investigation are continuously developing, leading to new opportunities in materials investigation. The symposium will be a forum of presentation of such methods and their applications.Crystallography provides multiple tools for solving scientific and technological problems in materials science. X-ray, neutron and electron diffraction methods of crystal and defect structure investigation are helpful in design and understanding of physical properties and chemistry of advanced materials, at each stage of the work on materials properties, design, manufacturing and applications. Such sophisticated tools, both experimental and theoretical ones, serve for studies of crystal structure and the defect structure of modern materials. The progress is observed in:
