Electron Crystallography School â€" ECS2015

The school is organized as a satellite event to European Crystallographic meeting â€" ECM29 in Rovinj, Croatia, 23-28 of August 2015. The school intends to cover main directions of contemporary research in the area of electron crystallography. The lectures are designed to meet the needs and interests of participants with diverse background â€" materials science, physics, chemistry, geology and biology. The participation in the school is granted with one ECTS credit point.
The program of the school comprises three days of lectures and tutorials and is structured as follows: each of the three days, a set of four lectures are given during each morning while the afternoon sessions are devoted to tutorials. The first day lectures are devoted to basic crystallography concepts and specifics of their application to electron diffraction. The second day lectures cover the structure solution methods and their use for structure analysis based on electron diffraction data. The third day lectures deal with specific crystallographic problems â€" lattice defects, modulated structures and poorly crystalline materials, seen by electron scattering. Tutorials will be given in small groups and interactive manner in order to encourage active discussions. A poster session gives students a possibility to present their research to the lecturers as well as to other participants.
As last but not least point it should be mentioned that active evening program facilitating free communication of students from different countries and also the lecturers should not be underestimated, and is in many cases a basis for fruitful scientific collaboration in the future.

Plant & Agricultural Science
Researchers of plants and agricultural science who are interested in studying the structure and molecular composition of plants and plant related products are the target audience for this theme. The school will prepare participants for basic application of synchrotron techniques and provide practical experiences. The school will include exercises in proposal writing, sample preparation, data collection, interpretation and visualization. Participants will also get hands-on training using their own samples with different experimental stations at the Canadian Light Source (infrared, soft X-ray, and hard X-rays beamlines).Art, Art History & Cultural Heritage
Scientists will have the opportunity to learn capabilities of synchrotron technology and how they can further research in the fields of archaeology, art culture anthropology, and paleontology. Participants will be introduced to synchrotron radiation, applicable techniques and examples of research already being done in Canada and around the world. Participants will get hands-on experience at two experimental stations. Participants are encouraged to bring their own sample to use in practical exercises. We are pleased to announce the second International Summer School of Crystallography at the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science at DESY, Hamburg (D). Prof. Carmelo Giacovazzo will lecture on the basics of crystallography, covering mathematical understanding of crystallographic point and space groups, diffraction experiments, structure factor calculations, systematic absences, determination of space groups, background of phasing for structure determination of biomolecules and many additional topics. Participants will also learn modern applications and instrumentation of protein crystallography experiments at advanced light sources, such as 3rd generation synchrotron and XFELs.

The summer school program is geared for PhD students working in the field of crystallography, but exceptions for motivated PostDocs and MSc students can be made. The course will mostly cover mathematical background of crystallography, hence we are looking for students, having a (bio)physics background. This will NOT be a workshop covering protein crystallographic programs but rather will be theory oriented.
Besides the lessons there will be guided tours of PETRAIII/European XFEL, a BBQ and a harbor boat trip scheduled.
Accepted applicants will be asked to pay a registration fee of approx. 100 EUR (includes coffee breaks and lunch). In addition, participants will have to pay for their own travel expenses, accommodation will cost 70 EUR at the DESY Guest House (the rest will be covered by the school budget).
The application deadline is on the 15th of March, 2015. Notification of accepted applicants will be sent end of March. Places and accommodation are limited to 30 students in total.

The 17th Annual National School on Neutron and X-ray Scattering

This school is designed to help introduce graduate students to the capabilities available at the neutron and x-ray user facilities in the United States. Lectures, presented by researchers from academia, industry, and national laboratories, include basic tutorials on the principles of neutron and x-ray scattering theory, the characteristics of neutron and synchrotron X-ray sources, as well as seminars on the application of scattering methods to a variety of scientific subjects. Â As part of the school, students also conduct a series of short experiments to provide some hands-on experience using instruments at neutron and synchrotron sources, at Argonne's Advanced Photon Source, and Oak Ridge's Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor facilities.

8th annual CCP4 USA Crystallography School
The first two days will be dedicated to data collection and processing. The rest of the school will focus on structure solution, refinement and validation.
The course is intended mainly for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and young scientists in the area of structural biology from all across the globe. The school is not meant as an introductory level course to protein crystallography. It is designed more for applicants with reasonable expertise in crystallography and experience with the CCP4 suite. The purpose of the school is to address specific problems that the applicants face while collecting diffraction data and while solving and refining novel structures. Applicants with crystals for data collection or with already collected data will be given strong consideration, although these are not mandatory requirements.
Several of the leading PX software developers from around the world will present lectures and tutorials on their software and will also be available to help with problems during hands-on sessions of the school.

SAD Theory & Historical Perspectives These lectures will address the theoretical aspects of overcoming the phase problem in using SAD and S-SAD data and highlight the historical perspectives of two initial de novo structures solved by S-SAD.Source/Beamline Considerations These lectures and Case Studies will cover the optimization of the experiment setup in terms of the hardware, choice of wavelength and other source specific parameters.
Data Collection Strategies This lecture will cover techniques and problems associated with collecting sulfur-SAD data including crystal centering, data collection setup and methods used to increase the anomalous scattering signal to noise ratio in the data. The lecture will highlight common areas where problems can occur and suggest how best to eliminate them.
Data Reduction Theory and Strategies These lectures and Case Studies will focus on the data reduction process (indexing, integration and scaling) using several popular data reduction programs as examples, highlighting critical program input parameters and program output. The lecture will highlight common areas where problems can occur and suggest how best to eliminate them. New methods such as Multi-Crystal and Single Crystal Multi-dataset averaging will be described.
Anomalous Substructure Determination & Phasing This lecture and Case Study will describe the use of SHELXCDE [9] and HKL2MAP to determine the anomalous scattering substructure, the correct handedness of the anomalous scattering substructure, the generation of initial protein phases and interpreting the quality of the resulting electron density map.

This International School will focus on the fundamentals of crystallization from solution and its applications to the field of the crystallization of biological macromolecules.
ISBC2015 will provide five days of lectures and practical demonstrations related to the crystallization of biological macromolecules, biominerals and biomimetic materials, with one full day devoted to case studies on the crystallization of membrane proteins, viruses and large macromolecular complexes
The School is intended for postgraduate and postdoctoral students as well as for research scientists from industrial and academic backgrounds that deal everyday with crystallization but seek fundamental knowledge on the behaviour of crystallizing solutions.We invite students from all over the world to join us to learn from selected international experts, to hear case study presentations, to watch practical hand-on demonstrations, to participate in round-table discussions and to present their research results in the dedicated poster sessions.

The 3rd School on Crystal Structure Determination from Diffraction Data Application on Powder samples is organised by The “Association tunisienne des matériaux et de l’environnement†and the “Unité de recherche de Chimie des Materiaux et de l’Environmentâ€, Université de Tunis El Manar -Tunisia in collaboration with The Department of Structure Analysis, Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, The « Institut des Sciences Chimiques de Rennes » (UMR 6226, CNRS - Université Rennes 1) and The DICAM Department at the University of Trento.
The number of participants will be limited to about 60 to ensure a convivial atmosphere, and the possibility to share dinners between all participants. The school will bring together specialists from the various sub-fields of crystallography and materials sciences with the aim to raise mutual interest and to teach under- and postgraduate students, young post-docs as well as senior scientists interested to be introduced to determination of crystal structure from powder diffraction data.
This school introduces the theory of powder diffraction and the methods available for crystal structure determination and for microstructure analysis from powder diffraction data (indexing, space group determination, structural and microstructural refinement techniques).
One unique aspect of this school will be the extensive use of computer programs during hands-on sessions dedicated to educational exercises.

To.Sca.Lake: Total Scattering Analysis of Nanoscaled Materials

The continuously growing interest in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (inducing the European Commission to consider them Key Enabling Technologie) well merges the new challenges they are able to foster, through the design of novel engineered nanomaterials, their structural aspects and multifunctional applications at a multiple scale, and the need for the development of highly focused, advanced physico-chemical characterization tools. The complexity of state-of-art nano-objects requires the synergistic collaborations of all actors differently contributing to the appealing Nanoworld.
To.Sca.Lake aims at stimulating such a synergy by inviting chemists, physicists, material scientists, biologists, mineralogists and all the interested scientists, from the Academia and the Industry, to join in the fascinating context of Villa del Grumello, a superb location overlooking the Como Lake. This workshop is mainly intended to draw the attention of the “nano†community towards the potentiality of Scattering Methods, spanning from Small and Wide Angle X-ray (SAXS and WAXS) to Low and Wide Angle Light Scattering (LALS and WALS) Techniques. Particular emphasis will be given to innovative Wide Angle X-ray Total Scattering (WAXTS) methods, in the form of the Debye Function Analysis of nanomaterials proposed in the DebUsSy Suite of Program. Theoretical lessons will be dedicated to fundamentals, experimental and computational aspects of the methods, and will illustrate advanced cases of application in strategic fields. Demos and hands-on sessions will constituite a relevant portion of the whole program.

The 11th LANSCE School on Neutron Scattering: Materials at the Mesoscale, will focus on the influence of surfaces, interfaces, meso- and micro-structure on the functionality of materials. School aims and scope
The international school aims at providing a thorough background in physical and chemical surface characterization, based on methods and instruments, to interested PhD students, post-docs and scientists working at European and non-European universities and laboratories. The school will cover the different aspects of surface analysis and appropriate analytical techniques in detail, from the most conventional (Raman spectroscopy, AFM/STM, IBA) to the most innovative requiring Synchrotron X-ray (X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray microscopy, X-ray diffraction/scattering). The complementarity between laboratory and X-ray based techniques will be presented.
Plenary lectures and tutorials are given by specialists of materials science, solid state-physics, physico-chemical interface from CEA, Synchrotron SOLEIL and Paris Sud University. A substantial part of the programme is devoted to practical sessions carried out on cutting edge instruments, at the facilities of partner institutes and laboratories. In addition, a practical exercise on how to prepare a successful beam time proposal is given, as well as a poster session and a tour of SOLEIL. Examples presented during the lectures cover the variety of existing applications to physics and chemistry of condensed matter.
The attendees will be able to discuss their own projects with the speakers and other participants.
