FEBS 2018: Advanced Methods in Macromolecular Crystallization

The 17th International Summer School on Crystal Growth (ISSCG-17)

We are pleased to announce that the 17th International Summer School on Crystal Growth will be held in Granby, CO USA from July 21-26, 2019 in conjunction with 19th International Conference on Crystal Growth and Epitaxy (in Keystone, CO on July 28-August 2, 2019).
The venue of the school will be the YMCA of the Rockies â€" Snow Mountain Ranch. The YMCA is ~100 miles from Denver International Airport (2 hour drive) and ~80 miles from Keystone (1.5 hour drive). The technical program consists of approximately 15 lectures covering theoretical and experimental aspects of the growth and characterization of semiconducting, oxide, metallic, organic and biological crystals. Lectures are planned by leading researchers in fundamentals of bulk crystal growth and epitaxial processes, solution phase growth, nanocrystallization, and in situ and ex situ characterization.
The format of the school is designed to encourage interaction between lecturers and attendees. Informal discussions will be facilitated via social events including breakfasts and dinners, poster sessions with extended coffee breaks, a welcome reception and outdoor barbeque. In addition, the YMCA venue has numerous outdoor activities which will provide additional opportunities for attendees to interact in a scenic outdoor setting.

38th Berlin School on Neutron Scattering

The school program consists of three days of lectures giving a theoretical introduction to the fundamentals of neutron scattering and the principles of various neutron scattering techniques. After the lectures, there will be three and a half days of hands-on experiments on seven different neutron scattering instruments. The students will be divided into groups of four to five people from similar subject areas and will do triple-axis spectroscopy, powder diffraction, small angle scattering, reflectometry, time-of-flight spectroscopy, tomography and residual stress analysis under the guidance of experienced scientists.

In the era of nanoscience, the size of particles to be investigated gets smaller and smaller, and traditional techniques used to characterise materials are being stretched beyond their limit. Electron Crystallography (EC) is a powerful tool to study crystal structure and properties of nano-sized materials and fills the void of information left when other methods struggle to provide convincing data for nanoscale objects.
Exciting developments such as aberration correctors, dedicated specimen-holders, highly sensitive cameras, new data acquisition techniques, automated routines for data collection and new data processing software and methods allow electron crystallographers to determine crystal structures from micro- and nanocrystals with increasing accuracy and astonishing level of detail. The Course intends to review the traditional as well as the modern methods of electron crystallography; it will be divided into three major fields:
- provide a strong background on crystallography in general and electron crystallography in particular.
- introduce students to state-of-art techniques of electron crystallography including experimental techniques, data acquisition and data processing as well as to supporting techniques such as spectroscopy.
- cover different approaches for structure analysis and derive structure-property relationship.
The course will cover a range of materials, from organic molecules like pigments and drugs through complicated inorganic and metallic materials and minerals to protein structures. In addition to the standard crystalline materials it will focus also on amorphous, nano- and meso-crystalline state.

First Erice International School on Quantum Crystallography. 52nd Erice Course

This is the inaugural School on Quantum Crystallography at Erice. Quantum Crystallography refers to the combination of crystallographic information from diffraction or other scattering techniques with quantum mechanical theory. It is also an extension of quantum chemistry to periodic systems.
The School attempts to give a snapshot of this evolving field, complete with workshops demonstrating state-of-the art software. Topics will include: the beginnings of the Quantum Crystallography in the measurement of the electron charge or spin density; the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem and the importance of the X-ray diffraction experiment; multipole-based models for the charge density; polarizable-density models; momentum based experiments and orbital density expansions; joint refinement of charge, spin, and momentum density.

The 9th AONSA/The 2nd Neutron and Muon School

The school provides neutron and muon beam research training for newcomers to the technique from a variety of backgrounds. In addition to lectures, the course provides practical sessions of hands-on experiments and data analysis. The school has a registration fee of JPY 30,000 - this fee includes a room charge and full board throughout the entirety of the school course. Financial support is available for participants travelling from developing countries.
