The 2022 conference ( postponed 2020 at the onset of the Pandemic ) builds on our successful previous events on the same theme in 2014, 2016 and 2018.

The cross-disciplinary conference seeks to showcase the recent advancements in science and engineering on the African continent, with a specific focus on the role that advanced light sources have played, and may play, in promoting continued high-level scientific advancement.

The conference programme consists of joint plenaries, workshops, town hall gatherings, and streams of parallel sessions on a comprehensive array of scientific sub-disciplines. We are excited to announce that the conference website is now live and is currently accepting registrations and abstract submissions.

The 78th Annual Pittsburgh Diffraction Conference, a free virtual event hosted by SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory from September 19th to September 21st, 2021, and concurrent with the 2021 SSRL/LCLS Users' Meeting and Workshops.
 

The conference will feature a welcome reception on September 19th (via Kumospace) followed by two full days of lectures, poster presentations and virtual tours to the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory facilities.

Session topics include metals in biology, computational methods in structural science, cryoEM of biomolecules and cells, scientific opportunities for remote access to user facilities, neutron diffraction, and powder diffraction in materials science research.

The best graduate student poster presentations at the conference will be awarded with the Chung Soo Yoo Award, established by the Pittsburgh Diffraction Society to honor Dr. Yoo’s memory, and a $400 cash prize. One award will be given to a poster related to biological research and one to a poster related to materials science or chemistry. All graduate students are welcome to submit a poster and be considered for the awards.

Larch for XAFS data processing and Analysis

XAFS 2021 Virtual is offering a Virtual Hands-on Tutorial /Demo using Larch for XAFS data processing and analysis. Please note, this is not included in your XAFS 2021 Virtual registration fee, an additional cost of $50 will be added to your invoice.

To be able to cater for all time zones, the same workshop will be offered twice on Sunday 11 July during the following timeslots:

1. 10:00AM â€" 1:00PM AEST
2. 3:00PM â€" 6:00PM AEST

Larch provides a full range of tools for processing, visualizing, and analysing XAFS Data. In this workshop, we'll demonstrate basic data processing of XANES and XAFS data, including the fitting of pre-edge peaks, principal component analysis, and linear combination analytic methods. For analysis of the extended EXAFS, background subtraction and Fourier transforms will be demonstrated and discussed.  Simple examples of fitting one and two paths from Feff calculations will also be demonstrated.  The analyses shown will be a combination of Graphical User Interface and scripting and programming with the Larch Python library will be discussed.

The joint fifth Science-Policy Forum for Biodiversity and the eighth International Conference on Sustainability Science (ICSS 8) aim to provide space for scientists, policy makers and other relevant stakeholders to discuss and make recommendations on how science, technology and innovation could contribute to the effective implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework in order to bend the curve of biodiversity loss and obtain positive biodiversity outcomes and foster transformative change towards achieving the 2050 Vision.

In particular, participants will discuss options and solutions to facilitate the implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, including potential nature-based solutions for tackling both biodiversity loss and climate change challenges based on solid scientific knowledge and evidence. They will also identify key knowledge gaps and priorities for science-policy research, needs for capacity building and opportunities for increased technical and scientific cooperation.

The First Regional Structural Biology meeting for Balkans and the South-East Mediterranean
area” is jointly organized by iNEXT-Discovery partners NHRF and NKI and is to be
held online on Friday afternoon, May 14th, 2021.
 
 

The aim of the meeting is to:

- increase awareness of EU-wide iNEXT-Discovery and Instruct-ERIC
structural biology services

- emphasize on possibilities for remote access

- broaden the structural biology user community

- strengthen awareness and cooperation between European stakeholders
An overview of structural biology research in the European Research Area will
be presented by Prof. Anastassis Perrakis, Prof. Sir David Stuart, Prof.
Harald Schwalbe, Dr Andreas Holtel and Prof. Yannis Ioannidis followed by *open
discussion to stimulate the engagement of key stakeholders in Structural
Biology at Regional level*. The target group of the meeting is scientists
from academia and industry, research administrators and decision-makers
from Balkans and Southern Mediterranean countries.

First Annual Scientific Meeting of iNEXT-Discovery, is a European project in the area of structural biology, from which you can access several EU centers (X-ray, NMR, cryoEM and 
biophysical technologies).

Within this Conference there is the Michael G. Rossmann Memorial Symposium which focuses on the application of hybrid methods in electron microscopy of viruses, enzymes and other macromolecules, areas in which Michael was a pioneer.

The symposium will feature invited talks from Prof. Hao Wu (Harvard Medical School), Prof. Rui Zhao (University of Colorado School of Medicine), and Prof. Chuan (River) Xiao (University of Texas El Paso).
 

We invite abstracts from speakers in academics and industry at all career levels who develop and apply cutting-edge structural biology approaches to the study of viruses, viral proteins, enzymes, membrane proteins, and other systems. Ten abstracts will be selected for 15-minute oral presentations whereas the remaining abstracts will have the opportunity to be selected for poster presentations. Please note that the deadline for abstract submission is February 18, 2021. You will have the opportunity to select your preference for either in-person or virtual presentation.

The Electron Microscopy Science Technology Platform at the Francis Crick Institute in London, UK and the Bioimaging facilities of the EMBL Heidelberg, Germany and VIB Ghent, Belgium together with ZEISS, are proud to host the 5th joint symposium on Correlative Microscopy and volume EM - this time virtually.
