SCTE is intended to provide a forum for discussion on fundamental and applied research in the areas of the solid state chemistry, physics and materials science of compounds containing d- and f- elements, and as an informal platform to exchange ideas and promote new collaborations.
On this occasion, SCTE will celebrate its twentieth edition, after previous meetings from Paris (1965) to Genoa (2014).Â
The SCTE conference aims to assess the latest progress in these fields in several invited talks by experts, to foster presentations of on-going research projects by young researchers and PhD students, and to stimulate new collaborative projects.
47th IFF Spring School : Memristive Phenomena - From Fundamental Physics to Neuromorphic Computing

Memristive phenomena combine the functionalities of electronic resistance and data memory in solid-state elements, which are able to change their resistance as a result of electrical stimulation in a non-volatile fashion. In nanoelectronics, this functionality can be used for information storage and unconventional logic, as well as neuromorphic computing concepts that are aimed at mimicking the operation of the human brain.
A multitude of fascinating memristive phenomena has emerged over the past two decades. These phenomena typically occur in oxides and higher chalcogenides and are one of the hottest topics in current solid-state research, comprising unusual phase transitions, spintronic and multiferroic tunneling effects, as well as nanoscale redox processes by local ion motion. They involve electron correlation, quantum point contact effects and exotic conformation changes at the atomic level.

Aims
Complementing the Faraday Discussions meeting on Nanoparticle Synthesis and Assembly (Chicago, USA, April 2015) which will focus on ordered superlattice arrays of ligand-passivated inorganic clusters, with applications related to size scalability and processing, this meeting will emphasise the importance of considering both ordered and disordered assemblies, and the translation of fundamental science to applications. The scope of the Discussion will include chemically distinct classes of nanoparticle assemblies - polymer nanocomposites, patchy colloids, ligand-passivated inorganic nanocrystals - and link them with soft matter systems, with a view to understanding some of the basic principles of nanoparticle assembly and how they affect practical applications. The topic is particularly appropriate for the Faraday Discussions format with the possibility of documenting an interesting cross-fertilization of ideas.

HERCULES 2016 - European School. 26 Years of Neutron & Synchrotron Radiation Science

HERCULES is a European course for PhD students and young researchers using Neutrons and Synchrotron Radiation for applications in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Hard & Soft Condensed Matter.
   The 1-month school includes lectures (60%), hands-on practicals and tutorials at partner institutes (DESY and European XFEL in Hamburg, Ellettra and FERMI in Trieste, ESRF, ILL in Grenoble, Soleil and LLB near Paris, SLS in Switzerland) and Grenoble Laboratories (CEA, CNRS, EMBL, IBS).
   The school includes a common part and two parallel sessions:
- Biomolecular, soft condensed matter structure & dynamics
- Physics and chemistry of condensed matter

2016 MicroED workshop

In Ashburn, VA
MicroED is a technique that uses electron diffraction to facilitate structure determination from sub-micron sized crystals, eliminating the need to grow large crystals. MicroED uses equipment and procedures that are standard on many cryo-TEM:s, and because of this the technique can be easily adopted in labs and facilities around the world. To encourage the widespread use of MicroED we are offering this workshop to teach microscopists how to perform the technique and adopt it at their own institutions.
There is no registration fee for participation, and Janelia will provide on-site housing and meals. Attendees are expected to cover their own travel expenses and must be able to stay for the duration.
Space in the course is limited. Those interested should send a brief statement on why they wish to participate to conference@janelia.hhmi.org by Friday, October 18.
