The 2022 Gordon Research Conference on Crystal Engineering (GRC-CE) is a biannual meeting. The 2022 GRC-CE will bring together organic, inorganic, physical, computational chemists, as well as pharmaceutical scientists, materials scientists, data scientists, and others in a uniquely and highly interactive environment to discuss latest results at the cutting edge of the field. The program for the 2022 GRC-CE GRC includes sessions on Order, Disorder and Defects, Crystal Assembly, Polymorphs and Mixtures, Crystals Under Pressure, Crystal Reactivity, Pharmaceuticals and Cocrystals, Big Data and Informatics, Porosity and Open Framework Materials, and Engineering Across Different Length Scales.Â
An associated Graduate Research Seminar (GRS) prior to the GRC-CE conference ensures that young scientist are well represented as attendees at the GRC-CE. The highly interactive format of both the GRC and GRS ensures it will be a valuable experience for the next generation of researchers in the field. Â

Diffuse scattering: the crystallography of dynamics, defects, and disorder

Periodic order is the sine qua non of crystallography. Yet sometimes it is the departure from order that is crucial for material function. Proteins, frustrated magnets, photovoltaics, battery materials, high-temperature superconductors â€" there are many examples of important systems where disorder of one sort or another plays a pivotal role. Crystallographically, the signature of disorder is the existence of a diffuse component to the scattering function, usually orders of magnitude weaker than the conventional Bragg scattering. The advent of intense radiation sources, the development of revolutionary detector technologies, and the ready availability of high-performance computing have collectively transformed our ability to measure and interpret diffuse scattering from disordered crystals.
This course will cover the background necessary to measure and interpret diffuse scattering from disordered crystals. Its contents span the theory of diffraction and diffuse scattering, the practicalities of its measurement, and the many different approaches taken to its interpretation. The programme is loosely split into two strands â€" one with a focus on materials chemistry and physics and the other concerned mostly with protein dynamics. Collectively, the course will cover the various origins of diffuse scattering (e.g. dynamics, compositional/displacive disorder, magnetic disorder), and its form in both single-crystal and powder samples.

We will make recordings of the lessons available for download shortly after the lectures so that students can keep up with the School and take the exam in the same manner as those who attended the live lectures. However, in order to take the exam and receive a certificate of achievement, you will need to register for the School here.

5th Science-Policy Forum for Biodiversity & the 8th International Conference on Sustainability Science

The joint fifth Science-Policy Forum for Biodiversity and the eighth International Conference on Sustainability Science (ICSS 8) aim to provide space for scientists, policy makers and other relevant stakeholders to discuss and make recommendations on how science, technology and innovation could contribute to the effective implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework in order to bend the curve of biodiversity loss and obtain positive biodiversity outcomes and foster transformative change towards achieving the 2050 Vision.
In particular, participants will discuss options and solutions to facilitate the implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, including potential nature-based solutions for tackling both biodiversity loss and climate change challenges based on solid scientific knowledge and evidence. They will also identify key knowledge gaps and priorities for science-policy research, needs for capacity building and opportunities for increased technical and scientific cooperation.

BCA and BACG Joint Online Meeting 2021

The joint Programme Team has developed a series of joint sessions on themes of common interest to BCA and BACG members focused on the areas of crystal engineering, crystal structure prediction and bio-mineralisation. The BACG organisation team has developed sessions on topics unique to the crystallisation community around the themes of nucleation, growth and industrial crystallisation. The BCA team has offered sessions themed around the sub-groups as usual.
We look forward to welcoming everyone to the online meeting. A vibrant and dynamic programme has been pulled together which also includes opportunities for lively poster sessions, sponsor and exhibitor events, and sessions to allow for active networking and discussion. The programme reflects common interests, passion, enthusiasm for crystals, and crystallography within both organisations and the meeting will provide an opportunity to rekindle and reflect on the historical overlap between crystallisation and crystallography.
The BACG Organising Committee for 2021 is Dr Linda Seton, Dr Grahame Woollam and Prof Nick Blagden, and the BCA Programme Chair is Dr Tom Edwards.

Annual CCP4/APS crystallographic school "From data collection to structure refinement and beyond"

The school comprises two parts: remote data collection workshop and virtual crystallographic computing workshop. Data collection workshop includes beamline training, data collection on GM/CA at APS beamlines 23ID-D and 23ID-B equipped with Pilatus3 6M and Eiger 16M detectors respectively, and data processing. For data collection, only the participants' crystals will be used. Crystallographic computation workshop will feature many modern crystallographic software packages taught by authors and other experts. The daily schedule will be organized in three sections - lectures, tutorials, and hands-on (interactive troubleshooting of the technical difficulties the participants face in their projects). We have had considerable success resolving these problems in past years, attested by resulting publications (see http://www.ccp4.ac.uk/schools/APS-school/publications.php). A sample program, contact info and other details can be found at the School website. Applicants: Graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and early-career faculty, along with commercial/industrial researchers are encouraged to apply. Only about 20 applicants will be selected for participation. Participants of the workshop are strongly encouraged to bring their own problem data sets or crystals so the problems can be addressed during data collection and/or computation workshops.
