The second Chemical Crystallography Workshop in Canada will once again be hosted by the McMaster Analytical X-ray (MAX) Diffraction Facility at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON. The Workshop will be targeted towards chemistry graduate students and post docs who would benefit from an improved understanding of the basic theory and practice of structure determination using single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The workshop is offered as a satellite to the 2010 Canadian Society for Chemistry meeting in Toronto. The McMaster campus is on the very inexpensive GO Transit network (bus, commuter train) with both the Pearson Airport and Union Station (near the convention center).
The Workshop is organized by the Canadian National Committee for Crystallography. The International Union of Crystallography is a sponsor of the workshop, and is providing travel assistance for International students who qualify.
Participants will work with the WinGX software (on their own Windows laptops) and solve and refine several crystal structures, including one or two from their own research. Those who do not have access to a diffractometer can arrange to collect data in advance of the workshop. Several practice data sets will be supplied. WinGX is a free package with hooks into SHEXLS, SHELXD, SHELXL, SIR92, Superflip, PLATON, ORTEP, and more - everything required to process, solve, refine and validate single crystal diffraction data, as well as generate images and data tables.
Short demonstrations and presentations will be spread out over the five days in order for the student to appreciate some of the theory and and practice behind the process. A vague recollection of wave addition, Fourier transforms, point groups, matrices, trig and algebra will be assumed, although explanations will usually be based on 3D visualizations rather than equations.
Program
The program will consist of short lectures and demonstrations throughout the meeting. We will cover sample selection and mounting, optimizing data collection, diffraction theory, symmetry and space groups, reciprocal space, integration of data, structure solution and model building, refinement, and analyses and presentation of the derived data. Students will be solving and refining structures, starting almost immediately. We will have several experienced crystallographers helping the participants. Organic, inorganic, organometallic, and solid state crystals are all fair game.

Purpose of the Course
Crystallography and electron microscopy are pre-eminent techniques for obtaining the structure of biological macromolecules at atomic resolution. These structures, components of living organisms and viruses, are central to understand the detailed mechanisms of biological processes, and to discover novel therapeutics using a structure-based approach. Almost weekly, international journals such as Nature, Science, Cell show striking drawings of large biological molecular assemblies, and the articles therein explain the role and function in their biological environments. To counter the myriad modern threats of disease and their consequences for the living organisms, there is an urgent need to interpret the significance of the hundreds macromolecular structures published nowadays. This meeting will train upcoming generations of scientists to undertake this important task.
The present scientific programme will focus on the most recent achievements in structural studies of large molecular assemblies. Formal lectures in the main hall will be integrated with discussion and hot-question time sessions. The most recent advances in Information Technology -including speedy internet connection and most modern computers - will be available at the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture. Subject to agreeement by each speaker, the proceedings in the lecture hall will be web-broadcasted as a "Virtual Course".

Welcome to the Virtual Conference on Computational Chemistry
The first Virtual Conference on Computational Chemistry (VCCC-2013) was held from 1st to 31st August 2013. Following the success of this conference, we are now planning for the second virtual conference, VCCC-2014, from 1st to 31st August 2014. Â Chemistry is no more about test-tubes and experiments but it also involves the use of efficient and accurate computational methods.Â
This virtual conference will also be held as part of the International Year of Crystallography. Computational chemistry is also  used to complement research involving crystallography.
ICT can be used effectively for conferences and thus, virtual conferences have gained popularity. The major advantage of virtual conference is the lower cost involved for participation. One simply has to have access to the Internet or email to be involved in the conference.

How will the virtual conference take place?
- There will be a call for abstracts.
- Scientific committee will evaluate suitability of each submitted abstract.
- For each accepted abstract, author/s will be invited to submit the e-presentation in MS Word, MS Powerpoint, PDF or any other relevant format. Some examples are:

- Powerpoint format (15-20 slides)
- Video (10-15 minutes)
- E-presentations will be displayed on the website (secured).
- Registered participants will be able to download all the e-presentations.
- Participants can ask questions by sending email/s (using the online platform) to the corresponding author for each e-presentation.
- When a participant sends an email, the same email is received by all the registered participants. However, it is the responsibility of the corresponding author to reply to the question/s being asked within 24 hours. When the corresponding author responds by replying the email, the same is received by all the participants.
- Full paper (optional) will be reviewed and accepted papers will be collected in the conference proceedings.

Introduction
Mechanochemical reactions utilise mechanical force to achieve chemical transformation and can be conducted in a number of ways, including grinding/milling processes, sonication or by stretching individual molecules on the tip of an atomic force microscope. Because they can be both solvent-free and less energy consuming than standard solution reactions, mechanochemical transformations are rapidly becoming popular as a sustainable alternative to conventional solution-based and solvothermal chemical processes which are inherently wasteful of solvent and energy in both the laboratory and industry.Â
The growing interest in mechanochemical processes has in the past decade provided exciting developments in the areas of supramolecular (cocrystals, capsules, catenanes, rotaxanes), pharmaceutical (screening new solid drug forms, pharmaceutical cocrystals), materials (porous metal-organic frameworks, luminescent sensors) and organic (solvent-free synthesis, solid-state deracemisation, organic cages) chemistry and catalysis (stereoselective organocatalysts, metalorganic solvent-free catalysis, catalytic solid-state photoreactions). These developments indicate mechanochemistry will play a key role in future clean and sustainable technologies, ranging from "green" synthesis to mineral manufacturing and nanoparticle synthesis.Â
However, such development requires improving the understanding of underlying principles of mechanochemistry and extensive communication between researchers in its different areas (e.g. organic, inorganic, physical, industrial, academic). The 170th Faraday Discussions will facilitate further development of mechanochemistry in terms of applications, definitions and mechanistic understanding, and explore how its innovative, clean and energy-efficient applications could form the basis of new paradigm for academic and industrial chemistry.Aims
This meeting aims to bring together experts in milling mechanochemistry and sonochemistry, as well as researchers in organic synthesis, metal-organic and inorganic materials chemistry, physical chemists, pharmaceutical scientists and "green" chemistry researchers.ÂFormat
