1st BioStruct-X Mediterranean Macromolecular Crystallography Workshop

The Technion Center for Structural Biology (TCSB) is organizing a three day workshop on macromolecular crystallography under the auspices of the BioStruct-X project.
The workshop will include comprehensive theoretical lectures on all facets of crystallographic structure determination and hands-on tutorials. The lectures will be open to all, but the tutorials will be limited to 20 participants that will be chosen by committee. Lectures and tutorials will be given by Tom Terwilliger (Los Alamos), Randy Read (Cambridge), Zbigniew Dauter (Argonne), Karine Sparta (from the XDS development group) and members of the TCSB. Understanding Complex Macromolecular Systems from Sparse Data: The Astbury Conversation

The symposium runs from 2pm on Monday 11 until 3pm on Tuesday 12th April 2016.
 In April 2016 researchers, at all career stages, from across the globe will meet together to discuss recent innovations in the field of structural molecular biology.
This unique event being held at The University of Leeds, UK, has already attracted leading figures in this field including Professor Michael Levitt, FRS who was awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing computational tools to dissect chemical reactions.

Tender X-rays in Macromolecular Crystallography

The workshop is part of the series of foresight workshops organized by the HZB.
The central theme of the workshop is the use of tender X-rays in the field of
macromolecular crystallography (MX). While typical MX experiments are conducted
at wavelengths of around 1.0 Ã... (energy 12.4 keV), there is an ever growing tendency
to also consider wavelengths in the tender X-ray region (1.5 â€" 3.0 A and beyond) for
MX applications. Examples are the possibility to determine the structures of native
proteins by sulphur anomalous scattering (native SAD), the unambiguous discrimination
from protein-bound solvent ions from water molecules, the determination of oxidation
states of relevant metal ions in protein structures, the investigation of solvent and
substrate channels using Xenon mapping, etc. In the workshop, some of these
modern developments will be highlighted and a case will be made for the increased
use of tender X-rays for MX applications.
Invited speakers include Wayne Hendrickson, James Holton, Armin Wagner, Leo
Chavas, Meitian Wang, Oliver Einsle, Markus Wahl and Oliver Daumke.
Registration is free of charge but limited to 100 participants. 4 Travel grants to attend
the workshop are generously offered by the company DECTRIS.

In Grenoble
MXIS training course is dedicated to in situ protein crystallography. This 3-day workshop will include full lectures at the IBS and practical sessions at the ESRF, on beamlines FIP-BM30A and BM14. Full classes will be done in day 1 while practical sessions will be organized in subgroups that will be rotating from day 2 to day 3 (topics: ligand coating, crystallogenesis, in situ diffraction for crystal screening and structure resolution, in situ data processing). Possibility will be given to participants to practice on their own samples.

XXIII Users' Meeting.
 The ultimate aspiration of biology is to provide a comprehensive picture, over time and space, of the myriad of relationships between molecular structure, function and organization within bio-systems with increasing complexity level, ranging from single molecules to cells. Towards this aim, integrative approaches, which exploit state-of-the-art nano and sub-nano scale spatial resolution and unprecedented chemical sensitivity and selectivity, are required. The goal of this thematic workshop is to bring together biophysicists and biologists with scientists involved in the development of cutting-edge synchrotron-based and state-of-the art benchtop microscopies. The need for integrating the cluster of multidisciplinary synchrotron radiation based techniques with the newest laboratory approaches will be emphasized, focusing on their synergic interplay in the context of life-science.
