A step-by-step tutorial will guide you through structure determination, symmetry analysis, structure refinement and t-plots for crystal-chemical analysis of selected examples of modulated structures and composite crystals.

DISCUS Workshop

Within this workshop you will get an opportunity to learn all about structure simulation using DISCUS (https://github.com/tproffen/DiffuseCode ), a program complementary to the Rietveld approach. DISCUS can simulate powder pattern for disordered materials, crystalline and nanocrystalline.
In this workshop you will learn to interpret diffuse scattering and to simulate disordered crystal structures.Â
Defects are quite common in crystals and are responsible for a number of properties like ionic conductivity, electronic properties of indirect semiconductors etc.Â
In diffraction, defects manifest themselves by the presence of diffuse scattering. While its peak intensity usually is weak, the total scattering intensity will be an appreciable fraction of the Bragg intensities.Â
Thus, the description of these structures is largely incomplete without proper interpretation of the diffuse scattering.
The workshop covers the techniques to simulate and to refine disordered structures for a wide range of defects, and the corresponding calculation of the diffraction pattern for single crystals and powder, as well as the calculation of the pair distribution function PDF.

The 8th Workshop on Structural Analysis of Aperiodic Crystals continues a series of workshops on the structure determination of incommensurate crystals at the University of Bayreuth. An overview will be provided of the methods of structural analysis of incommensurately modulated crystals and composite crystals. Lectures will cover the basic principles of the superspace approach as well as recent developments on modulation functions and charge flipping.
Participants will have the opportunity to practice structural analysis in superspace with the computer programs Superflip and JANA2006 (written by V. Petricek, M. Dusek and L. Palatinus, Prague). A step-by-step tutorial will guide you through structure determination, symmetry analysis, structure refinement and t-plots for crystal-chemical analysis of selected examples of modulated structures and composite crystals. Your own data sets will be welcome, too.
The number of participants will be limited to 30.

This will be the eighth of a series of events held triennially since the first Aperiodic in Les Diablerets in 1994. The aim of the conference is to bring together scientists dealing with all aspects of aperiodic crystals and related problems. The conference will be hosted in the baroque building of the Brevnov monastery - the first male monastery in Bohemia founded in 993 AD. Despite of the historical origin, the venue offers all the necessary comfort for a successful and pleasant conference.
The venue is situated only about two kilometres from the Prague castle and about 20 minutes by tram from the famous historical city centre of Prague. Being considered by many one of the most beautiful cities in the world, we believe that the participants will enjoy not only the scientific programme, but also the opportunity to explore the magic and beauty of this city in the heart of Europe.

Aperiodic 2012 was the seventh International Conference on Aperiodic Crystals, organized under the auspices of the Commission on Aperiodic Crystals of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr). It followed Aperiodic'94 (Les Diablerets), Aperiodic'97 (Alpe d'Huez), Aperiodic'2000 (Nijmegen), Aperiodic'03 (Belo Horizonte), Aperiodic'06 (Zao) and Aperiodic '09 (Liverpool). The next conference in this series will be held in Prague in 2015, organised by Lukas Palatinus and colleagues.

Aperiodic crystals are long range ordered structures which lack translational invariance. They are found in a large variety of systems (minerals, organic compounds, single element under pressure, oxides, ferro-electrics, intermetallic compounds) and encompass incommensurately modulated structures, incommensurate composites and quasicrystals.Â
The structure determination of aperiodic crystals and the influence of the aperiodic order on their physical properties have made tremendous progress in recent years. However the high dimensional description and superspace approach used to describe the atomic structure of aperiodic crystal remains difficult to grasp for the non specialist.Â
This is why the Commission on Aperiodic Crystals and the Commission on Teaching Crystallography of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) have decided to organize a school on Aperiodic Crystals.Â
The targeted audience is clearly a non-specialist one: Phd students or experienced scientists working in the field of crystallography, chemistry, material science or solid state physic and willing to have a basic understanding of aperiodic crystals.Â
The school will be organized on 5 days in Carqueiranne, south of France. Experts in the field of aperiodic crystal will give lectures, in a tutorial way and on a step by step basis. The number of participants will be limited to 65 in order to facilitate exchanges.Â
After an introduction to the high dimensional concept on simple 1D or 2D toy model examples, the basis of the structure determination of aperiodic crystal will be introduced for each class of aperiodic crystals. Various examples will then be presented, together with overviews on phase transitions, phonon and phasons, simulations and aperiodic crystal stability.Â
Tutorial in small groups (20) will also be organized in order to practice the notion learned in the lectures.
