BCA BSG Winter Meeting

The BSG Winter Meeting will be held virtually on Friday 18th December. Please see the attached flyer or the BSG webpages (https://bsg.crystallography.org.uk/index.html) for details. In addition to the Zoom Webinar there will be a Remo cafe space for participants to interact between sessions and after the meeting. Our Winter meeting celebrates Rosalind Franklin’s 100th Birthday with a line-up of world-leading international speakers presenting some of the newest and exciting achievements in structural biology, including a substantial number of presentations related to SARS-CoV-2.We are also delighted that Professor Matthew Cobb from the University of Manchester will open our meeting with a historical account of the life and times of Rosalind Franklin.

In addition to organising meetings, a key role of the BCA Biological Structures Group is to promote the development of structural biology, particularly through supporting workshops, training and other events aimed at students and early career researchers. We receive many requests for support and profits from this meeting will be used to support as many of those events as we are able.Please note that we have tried to keep registration costs low. However, if you are a student and/or young researcher and are in need to support to attend this meeting then please contact our secretary Dr. Mark Roe (M.Roe@sussex.ac.uk) to discuss your circumstances.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy for solving chemical problems

The webinar will provide an introduction to X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) methods, with a focus on applications in chemistry and catalysis. The emphasis will be made on the types of structural and electronic information that can be extracted from XAS data, variety of XAS data analysis approaches and recent developments at ESRF XAS beamlines, illustrated by related case-studies.
MA-XRPD: a novel method for the non-invasive analysis of cultural heritage artifacts

To avoid invasive analytical procedures on artworks, the use of non-invasive macroscopic imaging techniques is becoming more prevalent in the field of cultural heritage. For this purpose, a macroscopic X-ray powder diffraction (MA-XRPD) scanner, capable of visualizing crystalline compounds in a highly specific manner, was recently developed at the University of Antwerp. In this webinar, Steven De Meyer, a PhD student at the University of Antwerp, will highlight the possibilities and limitations of this method, along with several case studies that have contributed towards a better understanding of the original pigments used by the Old Masters and the manner in which those pigments have deteriorated over time.
XAFS spectroscopy in a lab: a HAPG von Hamos laboratory spectrometer

The investigation of the chemical bond state by measuring the fine structure of absorption edges (XANES, EXAFS) has so far been a domain of synchrotron radiation. In this webinar, Dr. Wolfgang Malzer, a research scientist at the Berlin Laboratory for Innovative X-ray technologies, is presenting a modified Von Hamos laboratory spectrometer, based on pyrolytic graphite crystals and 2D hybrid photon counting detector. This new spectrometer makes it possible to achieve high-energy resolutions and large solid angles of the detection. Results of demonstration experiments and of applications in chemical research are shown. Prospects and possible use cases of laboratory XANES and EXAFS are discussed.

Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy with a Hybrid Pixel Detector: The Performances of DECTRIS ELA and NION IRIS Spectrometer

What makes a detector ideal for electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) applications? How can it affect the technique and the field? And what results could be achieved with a DECTRIS ELA detector integrated into a NION IRIS spectrometer? Tracy C. Lovejoy, COO at NION, who has recently co-authored a peer-reviewed article on a characterization of a hybrid pixel detector, will present the results of NION's research and share his outlook on the new era of EELS. Together with Luca Piazza from DECTRIS, he will answer your questions about the performance of hybrid pixel detectors, their integration in the spectrometer, and the potential of this experimental setup.

The NSLS-II (MX beamlines) is organizing a workshop entitled "Measuring Protein Dynamics using Very High Throughput Automated Micro-beam and Time Resolved Micro-beam Macromolecular Crystallography".
The format of the workshop is online (using BlueJeans and is scheduled to take place on May 18 and May 19 from 1 PM (ET) to 5.30 PM (ET) both days.
There is no fee to participate in the workshop.
