This RCSB Protein Data Bank (PDB) virtual course will be broadcast on Zoom. Please fill out the registration form to receive the Zoom link. Registration will be available online from March 1, 2023 to May 3, 2023.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Understand the basics of PDBx/mmCIF data dictionary and file format that underpin archiving of more than 200,000 experimentally determined three-dimensional biostructures in the PDB. Learn about software tools for generating and working with PDBx/mmCIF files, and programmatic access for harvesting PDB data. Main topics: * PDBx/mmCIF format description and examples * PDBx/mmCIF data model * Software tools for generating, editing, and visualizing PDBx/mmCIF files * PDBx/mmCIF dictionary extensions, including ModelCIF for computed structure models (CSM) from AI/ML * Parsing data from PDBx/mmCIF files for your research WHO SHOULD ATTEND Professionals and graduate students interested in learning about strategies to take full advantage of PDB data in the fields of: * Structural biology * Cheminformatics and computational chemistry * Bioinformatics and computational biology

Pandemic Preparedness: Accelerating the Discovery of New Therapeutics

The COVID-19 pandemic showed how poorly prepared we were to deal with a newly emerging respiratory virus. Antiviral drugs with the appropriate spectrum of activity can protect against a new pandemic threat until a vaccine can be developed and deployed. Drugs should be suitable for post-exposure prophylaxis or treatment of mild disease, possess oral activity with a good safety profile, have low cost of goods, and be easy to deliver and suitable for combination. The global research community must act collectively to generate a toolkit of antiviral agents covering a number of viral families. Scientists from many sectors â€" industry, academia, non-profits â€" will be involved, working in a multidisciplinary effort. This presentation provides a perspective on pandemic preparedness, the approaches that are being taken to tackle this problem, and the need to ensure equitable access to any drugs that are developed.

SPT Labtech are proud to support a Drug Discovery World webinar with presentations from two researchers for whom new sample prep methods have been important factors in overcoming sample-specific challenges they encountered during structural analysis.
Prof Wei-Jen Tang, University of Chicago will speak about overcoming denaturation effects to determine cryo-EM structures of multiple states of the small human protein PreP at near atomic resolution. Dr Radhika Malik, Icahn School of Medicine at Mont Sinai will discuss how overcoming strong preferred orientation issues resulted in the first structure of DNA Pol-zeta both without DNA and in the act of DNA synthesis.

Program Description: By blocking the central part of the objective lens in optical microscopy, we may improve resolution and contrast dramatically. This is a new type of telecentric optics based on central obscuration. This idea is a revival of old precession method in X-ray crystallography, which was developed by Martin J. Buerger at the beginning of the 1940's as a very clever alternative to collect Bragg diffractions without distorting the geometry of the reciprocal planes. In the EUV lithography, by introducing (precession method) rotating mirror and center obscured hollow mirror, we may go beyond 10 nm rule. In Cryo-EM, by precessing electron beam, we may directly observe molecule array in protein crystals, which provide powerful tool for protein analysis and drug discovery.
