History and scope
The first XTOP conference ("X-ray Topography and High Resolution Diffraction") took place in Marseille in 1992. The original topics covered were topography, double- and triple-crystal diffractometry of epitaxial layers, reflectometry and standing waves technique, with other added at later meetings. Topics for XTOP '2014 hold to the traditions of all the previous conferences.
XTOP brings together scientists from the fields of X-ray diffractometry, reflectometry, standing waves, coherent and conventional X-ray diffraction imaging and topography, as well as X-ray phase contrast imaging (radiography and micro-tomography). XTOP is thus one of the central scientific conference concerning methods and instrumentation in synchrotron-based high-resolution X-ray diffraction methods, phase contrast imaging, and micro-tomography.

The Collaboration of European FELs and SPS Facilities announces the Science@FELs 2014.
The 2nd international Science at FELs Conference, organized by the Paul Scherrer Institute, will take place in the Auditorium of the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, Switzerland.
This conference is a follow up of the Science@FELs 2012 jointly organized by DESY and the European XFEL in Hamburg, Germany, in July 2012 and will henceforth be organized regularly as an activity of the Collaboration of European FEL and SPS Facilities.
Science@FELs 2014 will focus on the scientific highlights achieved during the recent years in the fast evolving development and operation of free electron lasers. The scientific programme of the conference will consist of invited talks and contributed presentations, either in the form of oral presentations or posters.
The conference sessions will be held from Monday to Wednesday, with the Tuesday afternoon of the conference dedicated for a tour to PSI's large scale facilities and the SwissFEL construction site.

The first Virtual Conference on Computational Chemistry (VCCC-2013) was held from 1st to 31st August 2013. Following the success of this conference, we are now planning for the second virtual conference, VCCC-2014, from 1st to 31st August 2014. Â Chemistry is no more about test-tubes and experiments but it also involves the use of efficient and accurate computational methods.Â
This virtual conference will also be held as part of the International Year of Crystallography. Computational chemistry is also  used to complement research involving crystallography.
ICT can be used effectively for conferences and thus, virtual conferences have gained popularity. The major advantage of virtual conference is the lower cost involved for participation. One simply has to have access to the Internet or email to be involved in the conference.

How will the virtual conference take place?

- Scientific committee will evaluate suitability of each submitted abstract.
- For each accepted abstract, author/s will be invited to submit the e-presentation in MS Word, MS Powerpoint, PDF or any other relevant format. Some examples are:

- E-presentations will be displayed on the website (secured).
- Registered participants will be able to download all the e-presentations.
- Participants can ask questions by sending email/s (using the online platform) to the corresponding author for each e-presentation.

However, it is the responsibility of the corresponding author to reply to the question/s being asked within 24 hours. When the corresponding author responds by replying the email, the same is received by all the participants.
- Full paper (optional) will be reviewed and accepted papers will be collected in the conference proceedings.

Ionic Liquids are not new materials - they have been known for over 100 years, but have gained a substantial growth in renewed interest over the last 20 years, and particularly from 1995 onwards, first due to efforts by the United States Air Force in applying ILs as electrolytes, and then as a result of suggestions that ILs have unique properties as VOC solvent replacements and materials with new combinations of physical properties. Interest in the area blossomed in the mid 1990s with the realization that the complexity of the anion and cation components of ionic liquids allowed for relatively easy synthesis of structural variations, causing them to be known as 'designer solvents.' Today ILs are defined generally as those salts with melting points below 100 °C and whose melts are composed of discrete ions, but it is often the unique materials properties set, unavailable from molecular compounds or crystalline salts, that are bringing ILs under even more intense scrutiny. Interest in ionic liquids has been rapidly growing, in part because of the fascinating set of physical, chemical, and biological property sets these materials possess, and in part from the growing realization of new applications in such key areas as Sustainable Energy, Biomass, Biorefineries, Renewable Fuels and Chemicals, Materials, Pharmaceuticals, Separations, Catalysis, and Biotechnology (to name a few). Government and industrial funding in the area is rapidly increasing with the recognition of the many unique potential industrial applications this field offers.
This GRC will highlight many of the emerging themes which are becoming quite important worldwide and will represent an opportunity to meet and discuss these and other major topics in the field with international experts. In addition, representatives from large and small industry can provide insight into key issues such as scale-up, costs, availability, registration, and other key parameters needed to plan new ventures. Lively poster sessions and social events will provide much time for interaction with ionic liquid scientists and engineers from around the world. Biomineralization: Where Geology Meets Biology: The Inorganic-Organic Interface

Biominerals are everywhere in our world, including in our own bones, teeth and inner ear otoconia. Well over 60 biominerals have been identified in Nature, where they cut across most phyla. Biologically regulated mineralization (biomineralization) began more than 500 million years ago in the pre-Cambrian period, and indeed is in large measure partly responsible for the evolutionary success of the Cambrian explosion. Well prior to that, mineralogy on Earth has been affected by biological processes such that mineral "evolution" has likewise been described.
Surprisingly (or perhaps not surprisingly to some), the chemical composition and atomic structure of macroscopic and microscopic hard rocks found in the crust of the earth and in the geologic displays of museums and collectors is essentially the same used for organismal hardening strategies. The difference, of course, lies in the fact that biology has spatially diminished this rock-forming process in many cases down to the nanoscale, to form 'nanorocks' of sorts. The incredible downsizing precision of this nanoscaling process allows for tremendous organic-inorganic composite diversity across the structures and tissues of various organisms. Where biomineralization occurs within extracellular matrices - as in vertebrate bone, cartilage, dentin, cementum and enamel - the end result is billions, if not trillions or more, of nanocrystallites embedded within an organic scaffolding that together affords a degree of flexibility and toughness not present in the Earth's brittle gems. Gene mutations that ultimately affect mineral-regulating proteins typically lead to defective mineralization â€" and consequently decreased function â€" in the structures/tissues in which they reside.
Reconciliation of the evolving interplay between organic moieties and minerals lies at the heart of modern biomineralization inquiry, with studies typically requiring an integration of multi-pronged biophysical, biological and geological/mineralogical investigative approaches. Accordingly, this Gordon Research Conference on Biomineralization will explore the basic principles by which organisms synthesize, control and make use of minerals, as well as the potential applications of these, particularly related to the creation of novel, biologically regulated mineralized materials. Spectacular advances have been made in the last years and are impacting various scientific communities, from biology to geology, from life sciences to materials science, and from evolutionary sciences to engineering.
The central goal of this biomineralization GRC is to create a stimulating environment for scientists from all these disciplines to discuss the latest ideas and recent advances on how minerals interact with biomolecules, and what are the consequences of this interfacial interaction. The conference topics will cover all kinds of biominerals, including amongst others carbonates, phosphates, silica and iron oxides, whether they occur in vertebrates, invertebrates, plants and bacteria. It will also address human health issues related to abnormal mineralization or diseases connected to mineral growth and homeostasis in the skeleton and in teeth.
The great success of this GRC (its 50th anniversary) â€" and its first GRS (in 2012) â€" is largely attributable to its lively afternoon poster sessions, which complement exciting invited lectures usually followed by animated, provocative scientific exchange. The informal nature of the conference, along with abundant discussion time, breaks down barriers between students and junior and senior investigators, leading to an ongoing free and exciting exchange of scientific ideas. All are encouraged to present posters containing in part at least some new unpublished work, from which some will be selected for short oral presentations. Topics to be covered as part of the invited oral program include but are not limited to: Biomineral nucleation and growth, Intracellular biomineralization, Regulation of biomineralization in marine invertebrates, Protein/peptide structural biology regulating biomineralization processes, Computational simulations of biomineralization, Transgenic mouse models for understanding normal and pathologic biomineralization, Mineralized material properties and bioinspired materials, and Co-evolution of the geo- and biospheres.

The 2014 Gordon Research Conference on Multiferroic and Magnetoelectric Materials is the first in a series of biennial meetings that will present cutting-edge research on the design and properties of multifunctional materials with coexisting and mutually interacting orders. The conference features a wide range of scientifically and technologically important topics such as the origins of various microscopic coupling mechanisms, the behavior of domain structures, the role of spin-orbit coupling, and the consequences of nanoscale confinement. Because these topics are highly cross-cutting, the invited speakers represent a number of different scientific disciplines including chemistry, physics, materials science, and engineering. Lively and well-attended poster sessions are also anticipated. In the spirit of the Gordon Research Conferences, we encourage speakers and poster presenters to emphasize important advances and unpublished results. DNA Topoisomerases in Biology & Medicine: from Molecular Structure to Drug Targeting. Gordon Research Conference

The helical nature of DNA causes a topological problem for its replication. Watson and Crick were well aware of this potential problem, and in 1953 they stated: "Since the two chains in our model are intertwined, it is essential for them to untwist if they are to separate... Although it is difficult at the moment to see how these processes occur without everything getting tangled, we do not feel that this objection will be insuperable". We now know that this problem is solved by the DNA topoisomerases, which were first reported in 1971 by James Wang, with the discovery of bacterial topoisomerase I. Over the past ~40 years these enzymes have been found in all organisms (prokaryotes, eukaryotes, viruses and archaea) and to perform roles that are vital for survival, supporting replication, transcription and other processes where topological problems in DNA need to be resolved. The enzymes are ‘marvelous molecular machines’ catalyzing the seemingly magical task of passing one piece of DNA through another to catalyze changes in DNA topology. Some of the enzymes are molecular motors having the ability to transduce the free energy of ATP hydrolysis into torsional stress in DNA (supercoiling). Although the outline of their mechanisms has been established, a great deal is unknown and emerging technologies, such as single-molecule methods, need to be applied to gain a deeper understanding of these enzymes and their roles in cellular processes. Topoisomerases have become key drug targets both for anti-bacterial and anti-cancer chemotherapy. This is due to their essential nature and because of their mechanism of action, which involves transient DNA cleavage that, if disrupted, can lead to highly cytotoxic events. Study of these enzymes in the context of myriad cellular processes is of key importance in research leading to the development of new chemotherapeutic agents.
We have now established a regular series of meetings (every two years) centered on DNA topoisomerases, as part of the Gordon Research Conference Program. Activity over recent years confirms that there is an ongoing appetite for conferences in this area; previous topo meetings have always attracted plenty of participants. Around 1,000 papers concerned with topoisomerases are published each year, covering a wide range of topics. We anticipate that ‘DNA topoisomerases in biology and medicine’ will attract scientists in academia and industry from a broad range of disciplines including structural biology, mechanistic enzymology, biophysics, genetics, pharmacology, cell biology and medicine, and will result in a fertile mix of ideas and approaches. By establishing a GRC in this area we aim to provide stability and continuity for meetings in this area going forward; we warmly invite you to attend this meeting.
