Presentation style is oral

The 2nd MLF School is targeted at postgraduate students and early-career researchers from anywhere in the world who are interested in using neutron or muon beams in their research but who have limited or no experience with these techniques. The program will include introductory-level lectures and hands-on practical sessions on the neutron and muon instruments at the MLF.

The 7th Vacuum and Surface Sciences Conference of Asia and Australia (VASSCAA-7) will be held from October 5th (Sunday) to 9th (Thursday), 2014 at National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan.

The VASSCAA series is organized to create a new forum in Asia and Australia to discuss vacuum, surface and related sciences, techniques and applications. The conference is officially endorsed by the International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications (IUVSTA), and has subsequently been organized once every three years, and later every two years, starting from 1999, and has ever since expanded its activity to encompass numerous eminent speakers worldwide. More than 300 papers are expected to be presented in oral and poster sessions covering frontline research of Vacuum and Applied Surface Sciences. Collected papers through review presented in the conference will be published in the special issue of Applied Surface Science and VACUUM.

Opening a new window into surface interactions by combining inelastic neutron scattering and reflectometry to molecular dynamics

The Fourth Niels Bohr International Academy Meeting on ESS Science will be held November 2014 at the Niels Bohr International Academy in Copenhagen.

The main focus of the 2014 workshop-school will be the  combination of elastic and inelastic scattering methods, such as reflectometry, quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering (QENS and INS) to gain detailed understanding of relationships between structural and dynamic properties and thus ultimately the function of diverse materials. The needs and interests of students with a background in the hard-condensed matter sciences will be addressed with discussion on the use of these experimental methods in magnetism. Results of studies using polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR), INS and inelastic X-rays scattering (INX) will be at the core of those tutorials.

Following the successful formula from the last years, the students will be given a small project and will be guided by the lecturers to a solution. In parallel with, and following the school we plan to hold a small but intensive scientific meeting on carefully selected topics of relevance to the school and of current interest with extensive discussion between experimental and computational scientists.This workshop is sponsored by the Niels Bohr International Academy, by the PhD School of the University of Copenhagen, by the Institut Français du Danemark and by the European Spallation Source (ESS). “Condensed Matter in Paris” is an international conference covering all aspects of condensed matter physics, including soft condensed matter, liquid physics, biophysics, materials science, quantum physics and quantum simulators, low temperature physics, quantum fluids, strongly correlated materials, semiconductor physics, magnetism, surface and interface physics, electronic, optical, structural, and mechanical properties of materials, acoustics, and disordered media. An important place will be granted to interdisciplinary topics as well as to the development of research infrastructure in Europe.

“Condensed Matter in Paris” is jointly organised by the Condensed Matter Divisions of the French Physical Society SFP and of the European Physical Society EPS, and will unite the 14^th Journées de la Matière Condensée (JMC14) and the 25^th Conference of the Condensed Matter Division of the EPS (CMD25) in a single event.

 “Condensed Matter in Paris” is the next in the series of biyearly JMC and CMD conferences, the last of which were held in Montpellier and Edinburgh, respectively. It will also host the biyearly French-Singaporean workshop on physics, which, this year, will have “Graphene” as its main theme.

History and scope

The first XTOP conference ("X-ray Topography and High Resolution Diffraction") took place in Marseille in 1992. The original topics covered were topography, double- and triple-crystal diffractometry of epitaxial layers, reflectometry and standing waves technique, with other added at later meetings. Topics for XTOP '2014 hold to the traditions of all the previous conferences.

XTOP brings together scientists from the fields of X-ray diffractometry, reflectometry, standing waves, coherent and conventional X-ray diffraction imaging and topography, as well as X-ray phase contrast imaging (radiography and micro-tomography). XTOP is thus one of the central scientific conference concerning methods and instrumentation in synchrotron-based high-resolution X-ray diffraction methods, phase contrast imaging, and micro-tomography.
