Particulate Processes in the Pharmaceutical Industry IV

Over 80% of all pharmaceutical products are in the solid dosage form. Particulate processes therefore abound in the pharmaceutical industry. These include crystallization; high-shear granulation; fluidized bed drying, granulation, and coating; tablet compaction; fine powder transport, mixing, and blending. These and other particulate processes are used for the large-scale manufacture of tablets and capsules for public consumption. As such, efficient handling and processing of particulates is critical to meeting the stringent guidelines set by the FDA and profitable manufacture of pharmaceutical products. Failed batches can mean the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue needed to payback the tremendous up-front investment that is inherent in drug development. A recent US-FDA report on the pharmaceutical industry estimated that worldwide cost savings from manufacturing improvements could be as high as US$ 90 billion per year.
Particulate-based manufacturing processes need to be better understood so that they can be properly controlled and scaled up. The last decade has seen a shift from empirical formulation efforts to an engineering approach based on a better understanding of particulate behaviours in the process, facilitated by technological advances in computer modelling, manufacture and measurement techniques.

University of Malaya Pharmaceutical Co-Crystal Symposium 2014

As part of the events to celebrate the International Year of Crystallography, the one-day symposium "University of Malaya Pharmaceutical Co-Crystal Symposium 2014" will focus on co-crystal technology, especially as it relates to the pharmaceutical industry.
Prof. Mike Zaworokto (University of Limerick and UM Academic Icon) is the plenary lecturer for the event.
BACG 2014: 45th Annual Conference of the British Association for Crystal Growth

The 2014 Annual Conference of the BACG will be hosted by the University of Leeds, which is the home of the pioneering work underpinning the discipline of X-ray crystallography undertaken by William Henry Bragg and his son, William Lawrence Bragg in 1912-13, and for which they were jointly awarded a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1915. This conference will provide a forum for the exchange of scientific/technological ideas and findings amongst researchers from the UK and overseas focusing on the following topics. ISIC19. International Symposium on Industrial Crystallization

Crystallization takes place in most physical, biological, and chemical systems, and is exploited today in thousands of applications, from production of commodities to that of pharmaceuticals, food ingredients and fine chemicals. Research is active on a broad range of topics from fundamentals to applications, and has lead to new results and products in recent years. These developments of crystallization processes from molecules to devices lead to a better control of product quality and sustainable process.
The ISIC (International Symposium on Industrial Crystallization) series is organized by the Working Party on Crystallization of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE). Like the previous editions, ISIC19 aims to provide a unique opportunity for exchange between scientists and engineers of all disciplines, academia and industry, and between novice and expert. ISIC 19 presents a broad overview of the science and technology of crystallization with contributions from all continents.
