Satellite School of the 24th IUCr Congress 2017
The main focus of the event is the symmetry analysis of structural phase transitions in functional materials like ferroics and multiferroics. The first four days would cover fundamental crystallographic topics related to space group symmetry and its representation in International Tables for Crystallography, symmetry relations between space groups including group-subgroup and group-supergroup relationships, structure descriptions and comparison, crystal structure relationships. The last two days would be devoted to brief introduction to space group representations and their application in the analysis of structural phase transitions. The lecture sessions will be accompanied by hands on practical sessions on description of space groups in International Tables for Crystallography, Vol. A and online training for determination of subgroups of space groups, crystal structure relations and pseudosymmetry, representations of space groups and symmetry-mode analysis using Bilbao Crystallographic Server.

The aim of the school is to provide an introduction to group theoretical methods and tools necessary for appropriate applications of symmetry properties in solid state material science. Special emphasis is given to tutorials on computational crystallography using the Bilbao Crystallographic Server (BCS) (www.cryst.ehu.es) for the study of specific problems in solid state physics, like phase transitions, and their symmetry-mode analysis, comparison between crystal structures, magnetic symmetry and its applications in the description of magnetic structures, etc. The applications of BCS tools to ab initio calculations is specifically discussed for the study of ferroelectric polarization in organic and inorganic crystalline structures, phonon properties and computational materials design by structure prediction.
The school is intended for scientists in Material Science, Solid State Physics and Crystallography in general and specifically for graduate students and young researchers interested in a deep and practical knowledge of group theory and crystallography as applied in material science. The maximum number of participant is limited to 70. Official language of the School is English. MATRAC 2 Winter School. Application of Neutrons and Synchrotron Radiation in Materials Science with special focus on Fundamental Aspects of Materials

The school will be held in Utting/Ammersee and Garching/Munich, Germany, in cooperation with the Röntgen-Ã...ngström-Cluster (http://www.rontgen-angstrom.eu) and the BMBF (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, Germany).
The Winter School will provide a systematic overview of the application of neutrons and synchrotron radiation to the structural analysis of materials. The school starts with the fundamentals of synchrotron radiation and neutron scattering. The focus is subsequently shifted towards neutron techniques and their application to specific problems in materials science. Different classes of modern functional materials are presented and it will be shown how neutron scattering, on the one hand, and synchrotron radiation, on the other hand, can be used to explore the microscopic mechanisms that are responsible for their properties. While fundamental aspects are dominating, application related phenomena will be covered as well.
After a two-day theoretical course in Utting/Ammersee the participants will spend two days at the FRM II in Garching (near Munich) doing practicals. The fifth day of the school offers further talks and a final discussion. All relevant experimental methods will be covered.

New directions in porous crystalline materials: Faraday Discussion

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), and related molecular porous materials have entered a stage where not just the porosity, but other physical attributes are now playing a major role in their properties. Catalytic properties rivalling those of classic heterogeneous catalysts are being unearthed by carefully engineering isolated active sites in the pores. Photophysical properties enabled by both the rigidity and the controlled dynamics of the porous environment are making strides from both fundamental and applied perspectives. Applications in energy storage are emerging as well, enabled by important advances in increasing the electrical and ionic conductivity in these materials to values that rival and even surpass those of organic semiconductors. Exciting magnetic properties are being reported in such materials with increasing frequency as well, suggesting that perhaps porous magnets and possibly superconductors are also within reach.
This Discussion will thus focus on several important new directions in the chemistry of porous crystalline materials and will attempt to distil converging themes.

- New Directions in Gas Sorption and Separation with MOFs
Mainstay of many of the MOF researchers, this subfield is maturing into a much more applied field, with important applications especially in gas separation and methane storage. Both fundamental gas binding aspects and new structural aspects influencing gas sorption will be discussed and targeted as part of the discussion. - Electronic, Magnetic, and Photophysical Properties of MOFs and COFs
Electrical conductivity and charge transport have only recently become possible with MOFs. This is one of the newest potential applications of these materials. - Catalysis in MOFs
New trends here focus on electrochemical catalysis, strut-based metalloligand catalysis and organocatalysis, as well as node-based catalysis. All aspects have seen huge leaps in the last few years and these will be discussed in this session. - MOFs Modelling and Theory
This final session will focus on theoretical modelling of gas sorption processes in MOFs. A material genome is emerging, which is promised to allow ab-initio predictions of MOFs properties.
Aims
The aim of this discussion meeting is to develop fundamental understanding of key aspects in the chemistry of porous crystalline materials: chemical properties (i.e. catalysis, small molecule reactivity, post-synthetic tuning), electronic properties (i.e. magnetism, conductivity, and photophysics), and physical properties (adsorption and separation) will be discussed in this context.Â
11th International Symposium on the Characterization of Porous Solids (COPS-XI)

COPS-XI is the latest of a series of symposia, held every 3 years, devoted to fundamental and applied research on the characterization of the structure of porous materials and the relationship between structure and material performance.
